In this video I walk you through how to make a cheap diy basking area for your turtle. While turtle basking platforms scan be expensive, this method is a great way to make a cheap basking platform for your turtle.
How to make a diy basking area for turtles
1. First, you will need the following materials: a large plastic bin, a box cutter/sharp knife, coat hanger, and super glue.
2. Next, you will want to cut the entrance for the basking platform into the box using a box cutter or knife. Make sure that you make the opening big enough for your turtle, especially if you anticipate that your turtle will grow more. I suggest drawing an outline on the box to make it easer to cut in a straight line.
3. After you cut out the opening, you will want to use that piece of plastic as the ramp to the basking platform. If you need to adjust the shape of the plastic, I suggest blowing it with a hair dryer for a couple minutes, and then bend it into the desired shape.
4. Next, you will want to cut 4 holes: 2 into the corner of the ramp, and then two more into the top of the container. You will use these later.
5. Now you should glue the ramp into place on the container. Make sure the ramp extends far enough out, and also it’s important that the ramp isn’t too steep.
6. After the ramp is attached, you will want to connect the edge of the ramp with the top of the basking area. Simply use a clothes hanger to connect the holes, with one hanger on each side.
7. This step is optional, but I do recommend that you add some decorations to the basking area. For mine, I put down a layer of artificial grass. I also outlined the perimeter with small river rocks.
8. Now the last (and most important step) is attaching the basking platform to your tank. If you have a wide enough trim on your tank, I suggest just supergluing the box directly onto the trim. If you already have a cover on your tank, you should be able to attach the box to the cover with either glue or zip ties. Once the basking platform is secure, fill up your tank so that the ramp extends at least 1-2 inches into the water.
Having an adequate basking platform is essential for your turtles health. Since they can usually be expensive, many people decide to make their own homemade diy basking platform for their turtle. While this is a diy above tank turtle basking area, there are also ways to make them so they fit inside your tank.

I’m impressed that Penny made it up the basking platform in just three attempts!

Nice idea! This is better than egg crates cuz turtles can climb it and flip themselves over. I think there are bigger bins out there that can go over the entire side of the 75 gallon tank

Thanks! And yeah down the road I think it would be a great idea to use a bigger bin, especially if I get another turtle

I think egg crates are easier to build with, but yay flipping is an issue. What I did to get around it is lining the inside of the egg crate with some clear table cover, if your careful with the hot glue application it looks really nice, clean, and not turtle flipping!

@@juuzousuzuya654 I actually initially was planning on using egg crates, but I couldn’t find anywhere that sold big enough pieces.

Hi, it’s pretty normal for a baby turtle to swim very sporadically, especially when they see a human. Over time they will likely calm down. That being said, you will eventually need a much bigger tank for a red eared slider. As adults they will need at least 75 gallons.

For your 20 gallon, you should have it filled up at least 75% with water

Hey, thank you so much for watching my videos! Dealing with an eye infection can be tough, but with proper care, your slider can recover well. For a 4-year-old red eared slider with a weak shell, it's crucial to ensure a balanced diet and proper habitat setup. Make sure he's getting a variety of foods like leafy greens, pellets, and occasional treats like small bits of fish or shrimp. Calcium supplements might also help strengthen his shell. Regarding the UVB light, it's essential for his overall health, especially for shell development and preventing metabolic bone disease. If he's avoiding it, try positioning the light so it's not too intense or direct, and gradually increase exposure over time. Also, ensure there are shaded areas in the tank where he can retreat if he feels overwhelmed by the light. Sometimes turtles won't bask if the temperature of the light is too high. It should be around 95-100 degrees fahrenheight on the basking platform. Also, it's common for turtles to leave their basking platform when they see humans, so maybe he is basking in the light just not when you're there. Hope this helps!
