This video is meant to help new players who want to get to grips with how to build battle cruisers in their campaigns. I've chosen the 1930 start as that is, in my opinion, the best start date for new players. If you want to build a super cruiser with 11" guns I recommend my battlecruiser video, and if you want to build a 6 or 7" armed CA then the How to Build Light Cruisers video will be for you. This one is about your typical 'middleweight' cruiser.
Making videos is my job these days, if you loved the video and fancy leaving me a small consideration then you can! ko-fi.com/broth...

They should add a "Medium Guns" research tree that encompasses the 7-11in guns. "Light Guns" for 6in and below, and "Heavy Guns" for 12in and above.

Been saying that myself for a while!

I'll note that heavy cruisers have a fair bit of national variation in hulls, especially in later eras. The tower variety leaves something to be desired, though.

Most heavy cruisers look like small battleships. The Americans are easily the worst offenders.
@mechastophiles2118

Yeah, and unfortunately that isn't historically accurate in most cases. Here's hoping we get more cruiser towers in the future.

Rewatching this series as I've recently gotten back into UAD - a historical note that's worth pointing out is that 8" becoming the standard calibre for heavy cruisers (and in fact that classification even existing at all) was a product of the Washington Treaty. In a world without the Treaty System as presented in UAD, armoured cruiser gun development would've continued along pre-war lines, ie 9-10" guns (see the British 9.2" as an example, which was seriously considered for further development once the treaties collapsed in the late 1930s). So the 8/9" tech split makes a certain degree of historical sense, actually.

I have noticed AI very rarely uses anything larger than a 8 inch gun, and most often they go with 6s or 7s, which is why if I'm building a cruiser killer heavy cruiser I tend to armour them against 8s, unless I specifically know the AI has a heavy cruiser with bigger guns.

I recommend the 1st thing people do when building on any hull is they take a look at the hull section that says what the ideal speed on it is. Every hull has such an ideal speed, and if you go 2 or 2.5 knots higher than that, you will have a weight penalty on that ship. In this way you know what max speed you can go on a new design without any severe weight penalty.
@caelestigladii
@caelestigladii 5 месяцев назад
Wow so that info is available. I’ve been doing trial and error to find out the max speed without massive weight penalty.

SO for me when I am designing a CA, I like to think the opposite of you for ammo types. Instead of using AP to fight heavy ships, ill use HE. This allows you to do damage from any angle and not have to rely on penetrations for damage, also dos decent vs lighter ships. Using AP (SAP) for lighter ships can sometimes result in amazing damage. I call it the "all left" scheme, as in youre pick the ammo type from the left side of the menus lol

In campain i rush the cruiser techs. Having a heavy cruiser the size of enemy battleships is very funny. Make the cruisers have 9inch guns with a lot of 4inch and 2inch guns. Spewing fires at the enemy. I prefer the hulls with casemates for even more guns

I actually have never built CAs bc I usually go for BCs instead. It's not as if BC spam is expensive anyways and good CAs seem to cost as much as bad BCs. So, just build bad BCs and keep the money

In the 1890's, I see no reason to use anything other than 8.9" main guns on CA, because they get 50% accuracy. I've been reporting this bug with every patch or months, but it's still there. This makes these CA more powerful than battleships.

Should they separate the 8, 9 and 10 inch guns into their own Medium Gun category?

The exception is with the Japanese heavy cruisers that have torpedo casemate slots, torpedo spam is the way to go, You’ll hit something if you fire 5-10 torpedoes every minute per side Totally not inspired by an AI design And a few other hulls like the French and Italian, but the generic ones are all the same
@notarobot7620
@notarobot7620 Год назад
Oh my sweet summer child... Torpedoes aren't meant to hit anything, silly. Seriously, I've had a case of dumping 100 odd late game torpedoes from 10 dds at a broadside on superbattleship with no sonar at 10 kilometers (bordering on suicide range for the era), and got...drumroll please.. 2 hits. I'm not that bad.

Is the advanced radio/RDF a useful choice for these types of long-ranged cruisers, for scouting/recon purposes on map for more encounters? I was under impression the radio was a necessity on "any" ship type, if only because the thought of ships in 1930 and onward using signal flags to relay fleet orders is very comical indeed. 😂 Plus, being able to bear down on where an enemy is with the "magic green line" helps mitigate the "ghost encounter" issues, if only slightly.

Yes, but Radar does all this as well but better. You can have both to stack the bonuses but that’s a ‘nice to have’

Excellent series. When you're looking at your HE shell choice, what ranges and penetration numbers are you looking at? That went by me a little too fast.
@BrotherMunro
@BrotherMunro Год назад
The penetration number I’m after is 4” which basically means you can obliterate DD’s. The range is ideally as far out as you can so that you can threaten them before they can get into a decent firing position

Considering the game still has all of their battlelines fire at the flag ship of yours would it make sense to make special flagship, ships that are just there to soak up damage and have max armor? Is there a way to ensure a ship becomes the flagship?

Is it a good idea to minimize components with added ship flaws modifiers?
@jessemijnders
@jessemijnders Год назад
In the earlier years definitely a viable strategy, but in the later years you will research bonuses which reduce the chance of flaws
@marcbjorg4823

I prefer designs with more main guns, maxing out smaller calibers for Damage Per Minute, more guns increases the chance of hitting the enemy at longer ranges.

Hey BrotherMunro, if you don't mind me asking, I notice that when you have to reduce weight on your ships, you never down size the funnels to a lower tier, it appears that you would only lose a tad amount of engine efficiency, but still be above 100%, you would save quite a bit of weight if you did this, However I was wondering if there is a reason that you don't do this, maybe like a debuff if you go for lower tier funnels or something
@okonkwojones
@okonkwojones Год назад
I think the higher % efficiency increase over 100% extends range, although I’m unsure if it’s a very high gain, or how useful it is. I don’t know for sure, but I could see it also effecting acceleration perhaps?
@dallinbuck2266
@dallinbuck2266 Год назад
I don't understand how you're getting your new armor numbers after you look at the pen. table. When the 7" gun pen. table you at 10,000m with a pen. of 16.2, you said that comes out to about 6.5" of armor. Where does this 6.5 number come from?
@BrotherMunro
@BrotherMunro Год назад
The values in the pen table are for 0% armour quality. In the 1930’s armour quality is typically about 150% so to convert from pen table value to actual value you need to divide by 2.5
@BrotherMunro
@BrotherMunro Год назад

IME you can work around that bug by adding a ship of whatever type is causing the bug to the battle. Game doesn't like that you have two BC designs? Add a BC, select one, have it run away immediately.

Me if I made ships I chose triple 5 in up tick caliber . Make up for slight lower spread with a ex gun mount . No need to waist tons on 1,2,3, inch guns . Side guns I call waist guns like star fleet . If I can mount 10 triple then 4 per broad side and 2 pair on quarter Deck . I don't like blind sides I think fireing racks must for secondaries be all racks covered. Make the bad guys pay . Capital ships can end up alone . Thus all round cover very important. Seen it happen to you . Me if I attack . I attack to my advantage not another's .

@MrNicoJac
@MrNicoJac Год назад
@@rubenromero5932 Ah, that makes sense! Still, I wouldn't look at the total but at the percentage. 5 mil on a 1930s BB is nothing, but could make a 1910s DD twice as expensive. (you seem to already be keeping things in perspective here, so that's great - I mean it more as a general rule) Also, I don't think higher range is _that_ important, is it? Like, as long as it's good enough to spawn decent mission, having even more doesn't matter _that_ much? So I think there are cases where max displacement would be totally worth it, but other cases where you're paying a lot extra for very little improvement?
