+Joey Cymbals I always use 100 lb weight rated slides for drawers and pull outs. I'll put a couple of links below for slides that I've used and recommend. Accuride makes a high quality slide. They are a bit more expensive but are less greasy and work very well. amzn.to/2y8D3Di The Pro Series slides are much more economical and still work very well. I find they do have a bit more grease on them so I usually wear a glove when handling them like I did in this video. That avoids getting grease on the finished project. I've used these slides on a lot of different projects from pull outs to kitchen drawers. amzn.to/2xqKYrM
The links are backwards but I get the point. I have them both in my Amazon's wish list. Thanks for bother in looking the links for me. That's very kind, have a great winter!!
I really don't understand people giving this a thumb's down. Most people click on the video, because they have an interest in learning how to build shelves. If this is you, and you gave it a thumbs down, do you know how much free information you just got? If you got this info in a college course you paid for, you would be thrilled. You just got that for free from the comfort of watching it on your screen wherever you are in only a few minutes. Whether you agree with everything he did or not, the amount of information that can be absorbed is pretty amazing. Think about that.
Thanks for your comment Robert, I appreciate it. I've never really understood the thumbs down either. Even if I don't really like a video all that much I'll just move on and not give it a thumbs up. Like you said it's free information that someone has taken their own time and resources to create. In my opinion, unless a video is very offensive, a thumbs down is just rude.
OMG Robert! I 100% agree about the wonderful free information that Dan is giving. My husband and I know absolutely nothing about carpentry but are trying to learn if we can find a very simple but effective way to retrofit my very small, (appx 5’x13 in double door pantry), with shelves into our 1925 bungalow. I just came home from having a double mastectomy and cannot lift heavy objects anymore. Dan’s is gifted and I truly appreciate his videos. Dan you get 2 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿 from us. Stay 😷
I often see these thumbs down replies and don't understand them either. I think some people click thumbs down to every video they watch. Very negative and unnecessary.
Easily the best video on this topic. So many videos skip the important details for measuring the width of the drawer which for me is the hardest part to get right with my project (doing the same thing of adding pull out shelves in my island). Thank you!
I reckon this is the most comprehensive tutorial I've seen on making and retrofitting kitchen drawers. I'm saving this one for future reference. Brilliant idea, on how not to get confused in the final figure, by deducting the 32nd afterwards. However, had to lol - unnecessary and far simpler in metric. Yes, to further tutorials.
Great and detailed video. Doing measurement calculations using metric is so much easier. No dealing with 1/32 or 1/8. Simpler to use cm and mm and all the same. Thank you.
My husband said, hey, I would love to build those pull out drawers for you but I am not sure how. I said you know me, the research queen. I will figure it out. And then you came along. I just love your presentation. I may not have all of the tools you have but we have some of them. Great job and thank you!
Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful video, Dan. Using your steps I was able to retrofit a poorly laid-out cupboard to instead be much more useful thanks to pull-out shelves. While mine were rather significantly more 'aesthetically challenged' than yours (thanks to inexperience and a more limited tool set), this video was the key to helping me complete my project. Appreciate it!
This was the best tutorial video I've seen on You Tube. Very professionally done. Thank you, just the encouragement,t with a fantastic tutorial, that I need to start my project.
Whoever gives thumbs down is a person that does not appreciate or see the difference between paying for this free education or not having this present resource. I am 65 years old, I which we had this information in this format in the 60’s, I would have become a genius 😂. For the haters, my daddy always said, if you ain’t saying something nice keep your opinions to yourself.
Hi Dan, thank you for this insight into making and installing these pullouts. Very informative and for me these subjects are pretty spot on. I have installed pre purchased pull outs but yours look more part of the unit. Regards Mike
When I build base cabinets I use only drawers with full or overextension guides. Eliminates the need to open and close doors to retrieve items from the shelves. Of course I realize this is an after install situation. Thanks for your informative videos. Bill
Great video again Dan. Width formula obvious when you think about it, but seeing it explicitly shown like this just adds to your confidence when doing jobs like this. Thanks!
Dan, You have the best shop productions around. I don't know how you do it but, they are just the best. Best teaching personality, detailed and professional production. Keep up the good work and don't change your style.
@@DPShopTalk thanks Dan, really appreciate your help. Hopefully I can get the same results this weekend. 😂. Looking forward on your next tutorial video.
I was just getting ready to make some pullouts. This was a great video and the construction method is simple. I couldn't quite tell if the screws were covered on the front panel. If so, what did you use to cover them?
This is an excellent video- I especially appreciated the help with measuring correct lengths for the drawer itself. I would love more how to videos- Keep them coming!
+glenda brekke you can buy commercially available slide mounts for cabinets that don't have inside gables to mount to. You can also make wooden rails or framing inside the cabinet to mount the slides to.
as always, great video! as soon as I get a notification of a new video I have to watch it immediately. This is something I've been wanting to do in the kitchen for a while but never found any good instructions on the process but you did great!
To save some screws and holes I use solid maple rails with 1/4” dado to accept shelf bottom which is also 1/4” maple plywood. I do not glue bottom to rails I leave it floating. I have shelves filled with over 35# of can goods and still holding strong. For finish I use a commercial sealer and spray finish as we have a commercial wood working shop.
Hi Dan, watched both parts of this DIY guide, have a question/request. When one has to install multiple draws/pullouts in a cabinet, is there an easy way of calculating the spacing of the slides to guarantee exact symmetry of draw fronts? Where the slides are installed on the draw itself, either in the middle or flush to the bottom, doesn't seem to matter, it's making sure that the slide component attached to the inside cabinet wall is in the right position which freaks me out! Have just subscribed to your channel 🤘
+Robert Williamson I usually do a drawing to lay out all the drawer or pullout spacings if they need to be exactly symmetrical. A program like SketchUp works well to do that and that way you can make sure that everything is laid out perfectly and that there will be no surprises. You can also lay it out full scale on the cabinet interior and do the math too. I don't really have an easy sure fire way to share other than just careful calculations and a good layout drawing. Mounting the slides in the same position on each drawer side helps simplify things when it comes to figuring out where the slides mount on the inside of the cabinet for sure. Hope that helps. Thanks for the subscription!
Alot of time spent on making those simple square drawers but very, very little on lining up the slides and properly installing those. The actual slides are what people have the most problem with and it was barely touch on.
Thank you for also posting a link to the sliders you used! This video is very helpful! Thank you for walking us through the process! My husband and I have an old house with a 1960s kitchen. Our Cabinets are outdated, but still rock solid. This will help us to add some updated storage!
+Ryley Lamarsh lol yeah I know, not a word. I got in a groove with saying width and length and it just morphed into heighth. One of those things that you don't notice until after the video is shot.
Great video. I'm in the process of installing some in my home. Quick question...on the double spacers at the bottom, did you use a wider banding tape to make them look like a single piece?
@@DPShopTalk I'm using 3/4" melamine so I'm assuming I can use this www.amazon.com/Band-Melamine-Iron-Edgebanding-38565/dp/B0071BR60I, unless you recommend a different brand. BTW, thanks for responding. I really appreciate it. I'm right in the middle of it so this was helpful.
Great video, thanks, I've viewed it a few times and ready to do my own. Before I found your video, I was afraid that pull out shelves may not work with melamine because it doesn't seem strong enough. Rockler also sells 100 pound rated pull out drawer slides, it seems like they would work also? Thanks.
I always thought I was the only one who would write something like 23 1/4 (-1/32) on my cut list. But you’re right, it’s faster and easier that way. I like the style of your video. It’s concise and easy to understand!!
New subscriber here. This was very useful for my project in my kitchen. I am retired and am a hobby carpenter more familiar with framing and not cabinet making. I have a couple of lower shelves in my cabinets that need some love. Also am considering asking a DIY hidden corner with slide out. Thanks again for your video. All the best in 2024!
Hello Dan, first, thanks for the previous replies. Give me some advice on making and installing drawers into a new melamine frameless carcass. I initially asked you about soft close side mount slides and you suggested soft close blum blumotion is what you use. Do you use the blumotion on melamine built drawers as well as solid wood drawers. I noticed your melamine roll out shelves do not have the bottoms dado'd into the sides, would you build the melamine drawer for undermount slides the same as you built your roll out shelves, other than having to raise the bottom up 1/2 and noting the back? My project is a 82" vanity and I was planning on what to use for drawers/doors and slides. I do want all soft close hardware and was planning on buying the doors and hinge hardware from the big box store and buying slides and building drawers myself. Is there a better supplier, is it more cost effective to buy the drawers and doors all made up ready to install? Cabinet sizes, 2-24" 5/8 high by 28" 7/16 wide x 21" deep and 1-24"5/8 high x 19 7/16 wide x 21" deep, Thanks in advance for any advice.
Well done Dan! Love these types of videos. I was looking at another video someone had done using Melamine and said that Titebond makes a glue especially for Melamine but he had not used it. Was wondering if you had any experience with it? Someone left a comment to that video saying that the product has a bit of a solvent to make the Melamine kinda "gluey". Gotta wipe off the squeezout right away though. Any recommendations on attaching those side supports to a cabinet that has sides walls that are only 5/16" thick (thin?). Also, what to do if there is a center stile? Too many questions.... Thanks.
+RxMixer thanks. I use the Titebond melamine glue for some projects and it works very well. It makes a strong bond and I use it for critical joints when working with melamine. From what I understand I think it has an acid in it to etch itself into the melamine surface but don't quote me on that. If I was working with a cabinet that had 5/16" thick gables I would beef them up on the inside with a thicker material and then attach the slides to that. That way you could glue and fasten the thicker material in place and then have plenty of meat to screw the slides to and it would stiffen up the thin gables too. If you have a center stile you could break it into two pullouts, one in each door opening. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the reply. Was thinking of that same solution with the drawers also...I think the wife is afraid of losing storage space though. Will have to ponder it a little more.
I have been putting off this part of my kitchen remodeling. This was the BEST video. Love the width formula. This is really going to help me finally finish my cabinets. ❤😊
Can you use the glides you recommend under a shelf? I have a industrial type shelving rack with wood shelves and want to install a slide out for a 30# epson printer so I can easily open the top and use the top mounted manual feed when I need to instead of taking the entire thing off the shelf and putting it on the floor.
Hi Dan where do you work? I'll like to have some of those slides done in my cabinets I live in North West Indiana . If not where can I find someone like you ? Thanks
I live in Nova Scotia, Canada so I'm a little too far from you unfortunately. If you do a search online you should be able to find someone in your area.
its funny.. my first boss explained measuring in the same basic way but everything we did had measurements with nothing, plus , or minus... and meant either right on mark, plus a small mark, or minus a small mark.. he always bought exactly the same company tape measures as well.. and insisted that the guy who measured marked the boards.. we also used a < on our lines to show which side of the line to cut on as well..
Sometimes I will do that for plywood but I don't usually bother with melamine. I've found that the screws provide enough strength for most applications. Sometimes I will add a bit of melamine glue to the join for some extra strength when needed.
