HOW TO BUILD MASSIVE TRAPS (You're Doing It WRONG!)

Figured it's been a while since I did a trap workout so let's get after it!
A few key points I wanted to get across in the video... First, it's not about throwing on a ton of weight or grabbing the biggest dumbbells and shrugging as many times as possible. If it was that simple then everyone would have massive traps. That only works for those people who's traps grow from just carrying the groceries inside. If you have had trouble in the past making progress then you need to drop the weight and start really contracting the muscle!
Second, I think people spend too much time doing up and down movements and not enough on angles that really contract the lower & mid trapezius. If you neglect that area then you will end up looking great from the front but when you turn to the side you will disappear!
Let me know what you think in the comments below and get after it!

Here is another tip use a barbell and a wider grip and lean slightly forward so that way your shrugging from a position that alines with the fibers of the traps. Plus don't neglect your middle and lower traps especially the lower traps very essential for stability.

Tip: The upper fibers of the traps (in most people) tend to be type 2A fiber dominated (fast twitch oxidative) since we use them when carrying things (similar to the calves). If you dont see much results from the standard 8-10 range, do HIGh reps with added intensity (slow controlled eccentric contractions and a powerful concentric burst) for a few months and see what comes of it. I got little results in my traps until i adopted a high range (minimum of 20 reps). Started with 135 and saw BIG progress in a short amount of time

Okay, the last exercise is seriously EXACTLY what I needed! This gives me a crazy pump directly in my mid to upper traps and it doesn't feel awkward! It doesn't feel like I'm getting other muscle groups involved, at least minimally... and it allows me to work hard! I'm feeling it right now... this is all at my home gym where I don't have any cable machines at all. Thanks Ryan, I love your stuff. Been a follower for a couple years now.

As always, great content. Traps are usually an afterthought for many and even if it’s not, all most do are simple shrugs. This video is fantastic because it doesn’t only show a few more movements, but it educates on effective movement patterns which could result in some good experimentation to have more fun on those traps! Nice work brother!

I love that Ryan displayed the seated, open-palmed, version of really isolating those traps and showing what it looks like to wrap those elbows during the contraction. I have also found that you can do those standing while holding 2 dumbells, open-palmed and leaning slightly forward, to the side - really finishing off the contraction with a good pull and second squeeze. Also, I too have become a fan of using the handle extensions during the seated pull to hit that 3D look. Great Video!

B D News flash.... not everyone wants to be a bodybuilder. I dare say most want to feel and look fit at least I find that to be true in my peer group in late 40’s to middle 50’s. And one thing I learned 20yrs ago from lifting heavy weight all the time was injuries sustained back then haunt you later as you try to continue a lifestyle of keeping fit. Two shoulder surgeries to repair injuries from younger heavy lifting sidelined me for 5 months a piece in a 3 yr span. Surgery isn’t free and spending time sidelined rehabbing injuries sucks. But......... to each his own brother. If your in the gym lifting or being active outdoors your physical quality of life god willing will most certainly be extended.

bruh it ain't that complicated. Ensure you have a balanced diet with all the different nutrients and the adequate amount. Train 4-7 times a week and make sure your working on your stabilizing muscles so you don't get injured for months, work on every part of each muscle with adequate volume, and be consistent. (stop doing upright rows). Also if your trying to put on weight eat in a calorie surplus and when ur losing weight eat in a calorie deficit that is all you need.

I have to watch these twice, because I laugh so much the first time thru. Great stuff. Home schooled, lol.

This is what I needed just those tweaks I felt the difference at half the damn weight. Shouldna made those home schooled kids cry tho. They had enough to deal with the campus bully growin up. Keep it coming.

Great stuff Ryan.I agree with his approach to Traps. I am 55...have worked out for years off and on...but decided last year to see how much NEW muscle I could build at my age. Decided to focus on TRAPS because I never really worked them much at all my entire life...so any growth would be NEW muscle as opposed to recapturing what I previously had. Tried heavy Barbell and DB Shrugs...never felt right..never got a good pump...never felt like it isolated just the traps. Did a bunch of experimenting...mostly diff ANGLES...lighter weights...using a short bar, db's, farmers walks at end. My traps have REALLY grown. Gotta focus on them as a MAJOR bodypart and train them 2x a week...if they are not sore or at least tight after every workout you were not activating them properly. My Top Exercises where I feel it the most : 1) Face Pulls with varied angles using bands or cable 2) Bill Kazmeier WIDE Grip High Pulls 3) Bertil Fox style upright row with a short bar (there is vid of him doing it on youtube) 4) Farmers Walks to end the workout My traps now rival any of you young bucks doing heavy rack pulls. Haha Good luck to everyone!

Brother I hardly throw in a comment but I had to this time because this is the best trap workout that I’ve done and seeing instant results. My traps were buffed afterwards!!! 💪 Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻

I love how I'm focusing on the importance of what Ryan is saying to me, and then be like, "did he just roast me?" Definitely subscribed. 😂😂
