Another great discussion Jeanine and Mike! The more I hear you talk about the importance of muscle building, especially for women as we age, I'm realizing that even though I "think" I'm emphasizing building muscle, I'm really not. I work out at home (have done for years), and I do follow along workouts on YT. I have certain trainers I've been following for many years, and I really like them. But, I'm realizing so many of the workouts I do tend to emphasize "getting the heart rate up", even those that focus on strength. Maybe it's time I rethink the type of workouts I'm doing. Are they REALLY helping me to progressively overload my major muscle groups, or am I just "getting a good sweat"?
Yes!! Sometimes we just get used to doing something for so long and it becomes routine, but we don't stop and evaluate if it is really working. Take a closer look at your routine. you can really benefit from intentionally focusing on progressive overload.
You touched on the bone loss for women post menopause in your last episode, and I remember thinking about my mother, she's just past 60 and she's never worked out, I've been worried about her and I've tried to get her into a gym... Two days ago she stepped on a rock and broke her foot 🤦♀️ and I promise it wouldn't have happened if she had ANY muscles protecting her and supplements to help with the weaker bones as she ages. But she's part of the generation where working out isn't the norm, and it bothers me so much. She thinks I'm extreme for working out 3 days a week 🫠
I think you mean we lose bone density as we get older, men do as well but not at the same rate as women. Men can also develop osteoporosis but it’s more common with women. Great episode and thank you 😘
Hey Mike, can you talk a little bit about your tennis elbow issue? My husband is struggling with that currently and is also interested in TRT. It seems very common in men. The Dr. told him to find another job but he’s a self employed mechanic. It’s not like he can just quit his company so any info can help.
Biggest mistake women make in the gym is moving constantly rather than doing a set slowly and intensely and then resting adequately before going again. Women are thinking of burning calories not training.
So do you not recommend full body workouts at all? The reason why I’m asking this is because normally Sunday is my rest day and then Monday I do a full body workout and then Tuesday I normally follow it up with An upper body workout. I normally feel like my body has enough time to recover. Or should I just focus on a body split and just cut out the full body completely? I really do love my whole body strength workouts. But I obviously want to do what will be best for muscle growth/building muscle.
