Step by step build series: • How to build a Table S...
In early 2017 I felt the urge to build a new table saw. For materials I decided to use mainly plywood. Plywood is stron, dimensionally stable and wear resistant at the edges. For the Motor of the saw I used my Bosch PKS 66.
The most interesting feature of this saw is the trunion tilt mechanism. Though it requires some accuracy and planning to make this mechanism actually work, it allows the saw blade to stay at it's place at the surface of the table even when the saw it tilted. The secret is that the trunions allow for a tilting axies that is excatly in plain with the surface of the table top.

I'm no expert, but I expect that the nature of the treads and rod should keep the saw cradle in place wherever the rotation stopped.

bueno, no seria muy complicado hacer un mecanismo de bloqueo en la propia manivela./ Well, it would not be very complicated to make a locking mechanism in the crank itself.

@daniyartabaldyev7406
@daniyartabaldyev7406 3 года назад

@user-us5cw3eq8y
@user-us5cw3eq8y 5 лет назад

Really clever! Getting the axis for the trunnion like that took some thinking! I'm guessing you passed all your geometry classes. Having the lift / tilt mechanism mounted to the cabinet instead of the top is smart too! I wonder why so many major manufacturers don't do that? Oh wait... yeah now I remember. It should be fun waiting for the safety trolls' comments on this one. Those unorthodox circ-saw techniques might cause some wet panties. ;-)

The system is wobbly as fuck like this. Only the threaded rod and the precision of the wood guides limit the wobble... Making that stuff precise enough for zero movement would cost more than most table saws do.

I don't agree, although I totally like the resulting table saw, I think Matthias' video's are more educative. SAFETY: Matthias corrects, or explains himself when he does something stupid, or when something goes wrong. Although you can see small accidents happen in Matthias' workshop, he rarely hurt himself because he takes better safety precautions. If you have/want million of viewers you better set a good example. DESIGN: Matthias shares more of his design / experiments.

Very nice build. Regarding accuracy, what's the limiting factor in your experience? The lift/tilt mechanics, or the saw axis /arbor? Did you take some measurements on play and blade wobble? I'm trying to decide if it's better to DIY or buy. Thanks for showing, I very much like your focus on quality. Andreas
@CosmasBauer
@CosmasBauer 6 лет назад
Thant's a hard decision. The saw's accuracy and if it will be better or worse then what ever store bought saw you have in focus depends on your skill level. I'll give you this advice: If you don't intrinsically feel like building your own table saw and try to rationally decide whether to build one or not, don't do it.

Cosmas, thanks for your reply. I've built a very basic table saw from a no-name circular saw, and found I couldn't get it very accurate, which I think was mainly due to the arbor wobble and axis play. I suspect that will be where most of the limitations of the home-made table saws will come from, and was wondering what your experience is.

Scott, I fully sympathise with your approach, you have to live in a country with access to affordable good quality vintage machines, though. Unfortunately where I live it seems there are only overpriced, low quality and run down saws available. Most home improvement store job site saws look like they also need a lot of tweaking, and quality brand name table saws are unaffordable.

IME circular saws are not terribly accurate but good enough. A higher-end alternative would be a circular saw (flat) motor with a larger arbor (usually 100 mm in the 2-4 kW class), but that also means larger blades, at least 300-350 mm, smaller doesn't really make much sense. On the upside these are always induction motors, often three phase, so idle noise and vibrations are a lot lower. In any case, you won't be able to build a table saw as accurate (or powerful) as a F45 or (good) Felder in your shop from some multiplex.
