I have two tips (from a guy who cannot do a bunny hop in the wild) BUT...uses flat pedals. 1. Get some shins protection. :D (I did not). You will realize this is the best buck you ever spent. Why so? Because you will try step 3 and you will fail to lift the rear wheel and you will not catch both pedals in landing and ...bam. Not an issue with clipless 2. Step 1+2 before 3. If you think the transition from 2 to 3 is easy, dream on. What i suggest is to do the simple bunny hop which is execute 1 and 2 simultaneous by simultaneously lifting both wheels parallel to the ground. After you mastered this one then doing 3 is just a breeze. I am somehow between 1+2 and 3 but after my last shin injury i feel less motivated :).

Transition between step 2-3 is easy. I learned it immediately. On 3rd day I could jump obstacle 10cm in height.

Absolutely amazing guide! I have tried to do bunny hop earlier with my own understanding but I completely missed the step three. I did instinctively parts one and two. And it was quite a lot like on the video After weeks I've managed to lift both wheels simultaneously a bit, but that resulted absolutely useless while riding and trying to jump over even little obstacles. But with a such detailed and thoughtful guide all I have to do now is practice these steps (especially the third). Furthermore I've purchased today Specialized p street2 and I think it's well oriented to do that kind of stuff. Thanks again, Chris. Your videos are great.

I had a crappy old mountain bike without any suspension back in college, and to get around i learned to bunny hop pretty quickly. The only difference was that I had standard pedals that dont lock in so it was all the front lift and roll to get the back wheel off the ground. Probably cant get as high as you, but i could best any curb out there lol

its a great tutoriol but i hav some tips aswell, i have rode bmx for around 3 years, and when i learned the bunny or broncho hop it was tricky because the wheels are smaller on a bmx bike,the tip is try to lung the bars as high as you can upward and than scoop with the feet and push with your hands it helps to pull the back wheel into the air with your body.tuck your knees at the same time
@ionutzstoica
@ionutzstoica 9 лет назад
Just did it!;) Seems that rising up the back weel,in an separate move, was the key for me. And in order to jump in lenght as well i would need more speed. I'veexercised at slow speed but tried with some more speed and works.

Your videos are very helpful. XC bikes which have the lightest dual suspensions are the best for bunny hops with less than approx. 140psi (both front and back). Gloves with gel pads when practicing are helpful. Also clipless pedals make lifting the back very easy but you should still make sure your technique is sound.
@mtbtips
@mtbtips 10 лет назад
Good tips, Groover. Light hardtails can make for easier hops, too, although full sus MTBs are more forgiving, especially when you're learning to land! I like the Gel gloves idea, that's a good one 'cause your hands can get hammered from a lot of practice, that's for sure. Just keep in mind that psi depends on your weight and the bike's suspension design. Cheers!~ Chris

Hi Chris, the shrug and roll worked for me! I practiced the 4 stages in separation for a few days but then when I tried to put them together, consciously thinking about what I'm doing at any point, it just wasn't working (too much to think about during 1 second) But today I decided to focus on the shrug and roll by exaggerating the motion and it clicked! I'm not even sure if I was doing the back wheel snap - the shrug and roll seemed to take care of it. I must film myself and see what's happening. Anyway, within one hour I progressed from just barely jumping over a stick on the ground to clearing a 1 foot high box. Thanks!
@mtbtips

Hey mtbtips I can see your channel getting better over time, and your replying to more people's comments! Keep the fantastic work, we all really appreciate it. I was wondering, Im wondering if trying to bunny hop whilst clipped out on my SPD's is going to get me anywhere? Or is it best to buy a proper set of flats and shoes? You should do a video on mini-legde step-ups, something like knee height. Its something I personally think you should cover. Anyway - Great channel, loving your dedication and friendly, professional approach.

Really good tutorial. Possibly the first one where explanation and video comes together so you can see what you hear and listen to details while watching. Thank you! The only thing is left - to do it myself )) Is it possible to do a good bunny hop with saddle lifted up and with flat pedals? When riding in the city, you often meet different obstacles, but city riding is much more comfortable on the lifted saddle.
@mtbtips
@mtbtips 8 лет назад
Thank you. Yes, sure it is. The height of your hop will be compromised, that's all - because your high saddle will be in the way. Cheers! ~ Chris

I learned it pretty much on 1st day. On 3rd day trying I could jump 10cm obstacle. It's not about the bike or weight of the bike but technique. I ride cross-bike. Not even MTB. Once you learn how to get front wheel over the obstacle - by using 'manual' technique - the rest is just shifting your body forward which you will do automatically without even thinking about it too much. It's not hard. I could jump almost 20cm in about 1 week. On cross-bike, using flat pedals. Yeah and make sure you have some speed while jumping! Nothing crazy, just some.

This guys telling you the wrong technique, you want to learn to manual first then using the manual technique (by shifting your weight backwards not pulling) get your front wheel in the air. After this don't rely on a scoop of the feet to get your back wheel lifted use your hips and arms. Thanks, Groover. Full sus can add a bit more spring to your hop and be more forgiving with a poor landing. However, apples for apples a full sus is more weight to lift off the ground, too. If your rebound is too slow, a full sus can feel heavier than it is - and feel like it's dragging when you try and lift it off the ground. Cheers! ~ Chris

Having a little trouble being the shrug and roll going, standing next to the bike and practising and shoulders are killing me. It feels as if my rear wheel is heavy as fuck, I can get it about 5-6 inches off the ground but it looks very "violent" and the bike keeps hitting me. Any advice?

Hi Chris, love the videos, yours is by far the best bunny hop tutorial on youtube as it includes the all important shrug and roll (even though i haven't got it yet). I've been out practicing for about 3 days aprox 1.30 per day. My elbows have started to hurt like hell. Do you think this is a technique issue or overuse?

Thanks, Groover. If you've been practicing one and a half hours for 3 days then your arms will be very sore, indeed!! My guess is that you've just got some serious muscle fatigue and soreness from starting to (intensely) use muscles you haven't used much before. Don't practice today, just to rest those arms, dude. When you're fatigued it's harder to keep a good technique, too. Make sure you check out the webpage for extra tips www.mtbtips.com/how-to-bunny-hop/ if you haven't already. In time, you'll get it good! Cheers. ~ Chris

Great video Chris, but I can't seem to get my front wheel that high. Any tips on getting the front wheel higher than 6 inches?

Have a read through the full tutorial at the website here www.mtbtips.com/how-to-bunny-hop/ and practice over several days. As your strength, confidence and balance to explode the bars up to your chest without falling over backwards improves, you should gain more height. Perhaps bend your knees more and relax your shoulders just before you commence the Pump and Lift. Cheers. ~ Chris

Hi Chris, Enjoy your videos very much! Keep up the good work! Chris, are you using clip less pedals on the bunny hop?
@mtbtips
@mtbtips 10 лет назад
Yes, David. Though I recommend starting on flats if you're low on confidence and skill. 0:41 is on flat pedals. Flat pedals don't allow you to 'cheat' the Heel Lift which forces you to get better at Parts 2 and 3. Cheers. ~ Chris

how come your chain hardly moves when doing this? when I go jumping or bunny hop and someone records you can see the chain whipping around and I have chipped the bar below the chain? Is it just certain bikes that can do this? my bike is unchanged from the shop and is a Voodoo Bantu. Does my problem happen on many bikes? how do I stop this? can I stop this?

I know I'm 4 years late. Your chain is probably just not tight enough.
