How to Bunny Hop - My First MTB Clinic

In this rolling cooler is 6 gallons of iced coffee-I wish. No, more like camera gear and blocks of wood. Today, at 8AM, I'm teaching my first ever clinic here at Virginia Key Park. I don't know how to hold a clinic so today will be a learning experience; not just for these riders, but for me as well. It may not surprise you that I chose to conduct a class on bunny hops. In my other videos I’ve used several alternate explanations of this technique to try and get through to as many people as possible. Teaching this clinic has given me even more insight into the challenges beginners face.
First of all I want to clarify that we're we’re talking about the American bunny hop. This has a lot of benefits over the English bunny hop, as it gives you the ability to go way higher. Learning this technique also helps you get higher off jumps.
This is Allan, a very involved rider down here in Miami. He helped organize the kids event last week. Although he’s an experienced rider, Allan has never practiced bunny hops before today. When we got started he could barely make it over 1 block of wood. Allan was in good company.
While a few riders already had the basic concept down, most everyone was new to bunny hopping. Even those that had a decent technique were still interested in hopping higher and smoother.
Like we already know from reading the comments on my videos, getting the front wheel up is a challenge for many riders. For this reason, it’s a good idea to master this part before you start trying to hop. I’ve explained the concept of preloading, where you force your weight down first in preparation to pop up. Using these riders as a sample group, it looks like a lot of you might be moving too fast and jerky. Some people move down so fast that they're actually pulling on the bars. While preloading, you shouldn’t be pulling at all, in fact you should be letting gravity bring your down, and actually pushing on your bars to pop back up.
If you’ve done your preload properly, you’ll be standing straight up, arms extended. It’s at this point where you can pull your bars towards your waist.
Once you master getting your front end up, it's time to break some other habits. For instance, a lot of first timers focus on using their feet to get the rear off the ground. The truth is that once you get your bike up at an angle, your bars are all you need. Whether you ride clipless or flat pedals like I do, just stop thinking about your feet altogether. It’s possible that this might conflict with some of my past advice, but this clinic has made me realize that focusing on your feet does more harm than good.
Because people were focusing on their feet, it actually prevented them from getting their rear wheels over things. If you’re having this problem, try landing nose heavy. In BMX landing nose heavy is a bad thing, but a longer bike with suspension forks is very different animal.
I think everyone at the clinic learned something. Although I'd like to take credit for this, a lot of Allan's improvement was just due to practice and repetition. For the whole morning he kept trying, and tweaking his technique. This goes to show you how important it is to ride with friends. Without this clinic, I doubt Allan would have taken it upon himself to set this stuff up and try bunny hopping for two hours. Just getting together with your friends at a set time could be as beneficial as meeting with an instructor.
So what did I learn? What will I do to improve my next clinic? Well no matter what topic I'm teaching, I'll be bringing some better obstacles that don't fall apart every time they get hit. I'll also be writing out the course and staying more organized. Another thing I didn't consider was separating the explanations from the demonstrations. Trying to explain something while out of breath isn't very professional. Although everyone seemed to enjoy themselves this morning, I’m going to ensure that my next clinic is as fun as possible above all other things. I think what made people improve the most was just getting together and practicing with the common goal of improving. Maybe I will fill that cooler with iced coffee next time. Maybe I’ll spike it with baileys…Maybe not. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

I'm a 57 year old female who just started mtb a year ago. I got interested because the trails looked fun, so I bought a used Specialized Hard Rock and fell in love with the whole thing. One of my first trips out I accidentally went a bit airborne when I hit a rock and discovered the fun of jumping! After that I started jumping everything, not very well, not like a kid who's been doing it for years, but like an old woman who felt young again! I have been trying to bunny hop for a year, watching all the videos, especially Seth's and Phil's, and I have finally got the hang of it! I can do it! I just bought a dropper post for the Specialized Crave I now have, and am so addicted. If I can learn to bunny hop, anyone with determination can!

Mate, I’m almost 44 and have been bombing down mountains since my early 20’s (pre-wife and kids). I knew I always cheated with clip-ins and this Covid-19 lock down has given me the opportunity to rediscover my love for MTB’ing and re-learn some key basic skills. Your earlier video on how to bunny hop with the slow-mo and narrative helped tremendously...after visualising how to do it I am now bunny hopping properly and without clip-ins. Thank you....I’m still working how my wheelies and manuals.

This video has probably helped me the most in understanding how to bunnyhop. It really shows it from the perspective of a beginner and helps people understand that a small bunnyhop is better then no bunnyhop mainly because when youtubers do a bunnyhop explanation they do huge massive ones that people feel like they have to match for a bunnyhop. Thank you Seth

The wonderful thing I learned about teaching (I started teaching a trade at a college 3 years ago, a trade I have done professionally for 20 years) is that it forces you to find explanations for your techniques that you probably haven't ever had to think about, you just do them. For me, teaching greatly increased my understanding of the subject matter because I had to analyze every piece of a task so that I could express the WHY behind them, instead of just saying--"do it this way". Great video, and I learn something every time I teach a class.
@dongarnier5890
@dongarnier5890 6 лет назад
So true. Everyone learns in a different way because what they hear and how they put the information together in their own head is a very personal thing. Covering every angle, even those that would never occur to the teacher(ie questions asked by students), allows the student to get a lot of information and take from it what works for them. In this case it's their body/bike combo and how they can make physics work for their own situation.

Thanks for the inspiration Seth! I was sitting on my couch watching this video because I felt like I haven't been able to reach the heights that I want to on my mtb. So I went outside with a bunch of 4x4 pieces of fire wood and stacked them up, first three, then four and I even cleared 5! I haven't jumped anything that high on a mtb ever before. I still have a long way to go to match what I used to do on a bmx back in the day and at 30 I probably look ridiculous to my neighbors but today I was 14 again and that was hella fun!

I like this kind of videos. Here you see real beginners, not professional riders, who actually try to learn it like I do. This motivates me to keep practicing and prevent me from getting discouraged when I don't see any progress. For all people, who 'watch millions of vids an still can't' a specific technique... You already know all about the theory, you don't need more vids. just keep practicing - this is all you need to do.

Seth, looked like an awesome day, and welcome to the life of an instructor. I was taught EDIP as an acronym explain, demonstrate, imitate and practice. The bunny hop is a very subtle skill that is almost magical. It looks so easy, until you try to do it. When you watch people who have mastered it, working it into their riding, it adds a whole other level of beauty and sophistication. Watching them jump over things and clearing things with no ramp is truly magical.

It's really true, worrying about the feet too much has a negative effect. I'm just starting to practice to get better with bunny hops, and at first it was all english bunny hops. Watched about every RU-vid bunny hop video, and I finally started to get that the front wheel has to come up first. Once you do that, you really start to feel that it's all controlled through the bars, and your feet are mostly just along for the ride. Of course there's a little scoop from your feet, but I think that's the key to teaching a bunny hop, getting people to understand that, so good on ya there!

i come from a bmx background and im looking into mountain biking. until last week i thought mountain bikers were crazy to go down a mountain like that with no traction on loose dirt and loose rocks, but my views changed when i saw two of my friends going to the beach before our class on their bikes, they asked me if i wanted to join them so i was like yeah. we took a few short cuts through bushes and a small hiking trail and hit a few jumps (messed up sidewalk blocks that formed a triangle and a few mounts form naturally in the trails) when we were riding they were pedaling pretty hard and i was trying to keep up with them and since i was focused on keeping up the whole scary part about loose dirt and rocks slipped my mind. after a few minutes into the trip i realized how much ive been enjoying it. i mean i had never done such a thing on my bmx. this was more fun cause i felt alive, the adrenalin rush made me try out a few bmx tricks while riding through a forest that was the most fun i had on a bike. now im buying a decent bike and gonna try to hit up a few trails. i go to college at upstate ny and its all mountains up here pretty sure there will be tons of trails for me to try out.

A friend once told me a trick that helps a lot still to this day, what you need to do is look where you want to go rather than what you are doing (he told me to shout looking good to look for good lines) this helps with jumps and bunny hops because when you look at the ground you don't get anywhere near as much height
