Thank you Chris, it's always a treat to watch you as I learn so much. For years I traveled long distance and camped out on my Virago 1100 and just wore jeans and long sleeve T shirts some times chaps and a leather jacket with a tiny helmet that I slapped a DOT sticker on the back. Now that I'm older I'm educating my self as I became aware of protective clothing and gear. I live in Southern California and regret not being able to visit your store but I can always order. Oh, I don't have Facebook because I just don't like it. Maybe next year you'll change it.

I agree, Benetts, Motocap and other testing labs all say the same thing. Lined jeans are twice as protective as the best single layer jeans. As a keen motorcyclist and a former CEN Technical Expert for a different EN WG, I enjoyed your informative videos about EN17092 and started to watch more of your well presented videos. Obviously a key benefit of producing videos of interest is getting a good plug in for the premium priced products that you sell. However, criticising a product you don't sell in order to promote one that you will? Street market trader strategy or what? Yes, the Hood jean is heavier, but featherweight compared to my (very comfortable once on) Alpinestars race leathers, it is AAA, British made and will probably be my jean of choice for cooler days now. Shame you don't sell them. I'm impressed by the look of your store, you sell some great stuff and your videos are excellent. Please don't dilute your professionalism by slagging the competition.

Second time I watch this video. Speaking of armor, what very few manufacturers got right is the placement of the armor horizontally: while seated, the leg seams and thus the armor pocket twist, that is move towards the inner part of the leg; so the armor does not cover the knee entirely any more. This has been a frustration in almost all jeans pairs I 've used.

I love your videos! But...I have always wondered about the placement of knee armor. Everyone says that you should adjust the knee armor to be just covering the knee when sitting on the bike (you say the same). In this position, when standing the armor usually drops below the knee. I have never seen a video nor been in any motorcycle accident where the impact on the body is in a sitting position. You are thrown off the bike and land on the ground or hit an obstacle in a generally laid out position. You don't land on your knees in a sitting position. This would put the armor too low to protect your knees. I have always thought that placing the armor higher above the knee while sitting is better. On the other hand, you could simply get armor that is longer and covers more of the leg. Your thoughts?
@The-Splat
@The-Splat 3 года назад
I agee, and the only answer has got to be armour that is longer and covers more of the leg (e.g. SAS-Tec SC-1/EVO3 or Rukka XTR knee armour). And while I know Chris prefers light armour, longer knee protectors are comfier for taller people :)

Yep, that’s a valid point but, for most people, a jean is a summer pant. In the winter, something with a membrane is normally more appropriate because, let’s face it, it could rain at any moment. A membrane will also be more effective at combatting the cold than a layer of Kevlar. CC.

They feel solid. The outside zipper is very easy to use and it’s nice to be able to throw your armor in a bag on your bike while walking around. I’ve done a ton of research and the Knox seem to be the safest jeans you can get. The dyneema jeans seem good, but after research on the heat transfer of dyneema i would be scared of burns you would get from sliding a few seconds in those jeans. Hope this helps

If you hit the side of a car it's the riding position of the armour that matters. If you fall off the armour hasn't had time to drop down the leg to the walking position. 13:50 UHMWPE funny. In woodworking and the plastics industry we use UHMW plastics for guides and jigs because it is extremely slippery. there's almost zero resistance when you're using it as a router guide, or to line the rip fence, etc etc. If you toss a 12 x 12 piece of plywood across the shop floor, it'll come to a stop in about a foot. Notice how many “stronger than steel” materials are showing up? Yet they can be malleable in your hand….I suspect there’s some liberties taken with these claims. They tend to be “per atom” or something along those lines and translating becomes a chore
@Omar-kw5ui
@Omar-kw5ui 2 года назад
When companies claim their material is stronger than steel, what they are actually saying is that their material has a higher tensile strength than steel (usually per unit weight). I.e. if you get a wire of steel, and you get a strand of spun kevlar of the same weight, then the kevlar will be far stronger in tension. This means the steel wire will plastically deform and break much sooner than the aramid fibre. I've done a quick search and Kevlar's tensile strength is 3620MPa while a mild steel has a tensile strength of around 841MPa. Note, a material being malleable has nothing to do with its tensile strength (i.e. its resistance to tension), rope for example is very strong in tension, while being very flexible. Malleability or flexibility in the sense that you use it is determined by the material's stiffness. Nothing to do with strength.
@Omar-kw5ui
@Omar-kw5ui 2 года назад
Also note, spider silk is often regarded as one of the strongest matierials out there. In fact, some spider silks are themselves 10x stronger than kevlar. However, of course they are extremely thin, much thinner than a human hair (around 20x thinner).
@Fee.1
@Fee.1 2 года назад
@@Omar-kw5ui it’s not even that they’re thin so much as they aren’t scalable that’s the main issue as far as utilizing that strength, correct? And yea thanks for clarifying. That’s all my understanding too and what I was getting at as far as the general worthlessness of that claim
@Omar-kw5ui
@Omar-kw5ui 2 года назад
@@Fee.1 no, they are in fact scalable and the claim is in fact very valid. The fact is, per unit weight, these material are stronger in tension than steel. That means you can create a part that is much lighter and achieves the same strength as a part that would be much heavier made using steel. These fibres can be woven together to get scaled up. They are used to make fabrics that people do in fact wear. Fabrics that are lightweight, pliable, while at the same time extremely strong. The claim is definitely not worthless at all. Take carbon fibre for example, there is a reason why the aeronautics industry use carbon fibre now to construct most of aircraft airframes and wings rather than using steel or aluminium. Similarly, F1 cars are made up of CF and other fibres rather than steel or lightweight metals.
@Fee.1
@Fee.1 2 года назад
@@Omar-kw5ui would you acknowledge that the claim as phrased leads to a skewed perception by most consumers as to what the strength actually is, and that that’s precisely the intention ?
@dokmartin3072

I have my doubts when it comes to UHMWPE. No UHMWPE jeans has passed CE AAA testing so far - at this point the only relevant testing regime we have. While more and more Kevlar-based jeans - single and multi-layered - get certified AAA. Resurgence, John Doe, PMJ and yes, even Hood's latest model. If UHMWPE were 15 stronger than carbon steel, it should pass AAA without even trying. Until now it has not.

"You are never going to wear through leather" ... that is absolute rubbish !!!. I have crashed, slid, and worn through leather and I would put money down that others have too. You would be advised to get your act together and keep your statements to what you actually know about !!.
