Best single-layer motorcycle jeans review

In this video review, Chris talks through our favourite single-layer motorcycle jeans. We love single-layer jeans; heck we were the poster boys for single-layer jeans before anybody even knew what they were. Well now, everybody is jumping on the bandwagon. Certainly, for our part, we’re not really interested in marketing traditional, lined jeans any more. And so Chris thought it might be opportune to deliver a state of the nation address on the single layer marketplace. As ever, it’s a confusing picture because already there’s a myriad of styles, fits, colourways, and fabrics. Some are expensive, whilst some are relatively cheap. They all also deliver different levels of protection. Well Chris is our jeans guy, and so in this review, he shows us a whole panoply of single-layer jeans. It’s all interesting stuff, but typically Chris doesn’t like to leave any stone unturned, so if you want to be put in the picture, you are going to need to set aside a bit over 30 minutes. If you can find the time you will be rewarded.

RevZilla could really learn a thing or two from your honesty. My only comment to make this better, have your model wear each jean and stand in the same position on and off the bike so we can see. We weren’t able to see the first two and what they looked like just standing there.

I’ve been researching jeans for a while now, and finally made the call to purchase a pair of the PMJ’s featured in this video, this video really helped me make the final decision. I’ve been wearing the jeans for around 2000kms on the bike and I have to say, seriously comfortable on and off the bike. I wish I could have purchased from Motolegends, however being in Australia and not sure about the sizing it just wasn’t practical. I will definitely be visiting the store during my next visit to the UK. Great channel and great content.

Hi Chris. Great review as usual. I came in your shop for a helmet a few months ago, you saved me some money by fitting me in a Schuberth C3 basic, rather than the more expensive one I thought I wanted. Great helmet, thanks. Then you sold me a pair of Rokkertechs for 350 quid , thanks again , hahaha. It is maybe worth mentioning that the Rokkers, while nice on a warm day, are bloody freezing on a cold one. You really want a layer under them in the cold, they feel very cold on yer bare skin, much more so than regular cotton jeans for example. I am a lanky 6ft. 4in. With a 36. Inside leg, the Rokkers were the only ones you had that fitted me well, but I’ve ditched the knee armour, cuz it feels a bit lumpy for walking to the bar. Happy New Year and Happy Trails. Jon

Hello. I've been reading and researching single layer vs lined jeans and tests that I came across consistently show lined jeans outperforming single layer jeans by a HUGE margin. I have been surprised about the statement that single layer jean can be 50% stronger than leather. Would you be so kind, anyone from Motolegends, to provide the information about this 50% stronger then leather statement? I would like to read about what and how the tests have been done to provide such results. As of this moment, all information I was able to find on tests points to the opposite being true. I hope to find out more on this. Many thanks!

Thanks for being the possibly most informative channel on motorcycle garments out there! A question regarding single layer jeans: I noticed that Hood Jeans very much advise against the concept, suggesting that an inner lining is needed to reduce friction between skin and abrasive layer. Can you maybe comment on that?

Thanks for the video. I liked the line about finding something tougher than a cow's ass... but I'm confused why leather still gets a higher safety rating if these textiles have similar 4+ seconds drag time? Leather is also required for most race courses I believe?
@martinfoster5163
@martinfoster5163 3 года назад
R DS leather suits haven’t stayed the same either. 4 seconds for cowhide is often quoted but that’s just on the lower end. I’ve seen cambridge tests with single layer leather lasting 10+ seconds. Furthermore in zone 1 and 2 (high risk) leather suits usually have 2 layers of leather and sometimes a 2nd or 3rd layer of aramid, foam or other abrasion resistant layer (like HighArt or similar). I, for one, will not wear single layer jeans. The risk of friction burns is considerable and their performance is not that great. Multiple layers of moderately protective material are always better than a single highly protective layer. I’ve got some great PMJ jeans (Dakar model) but they definitely aren’t single layer. Despite that, they are comfortable in South Vietnam’s tropical heat.

Anyone know of any AA / AAA black or grey jeans in slim with easily removable armour? I've been searching for a million years and can't find any that are affordable...
@Motolegends
@Motolegends 4 года назад
Affordable is a piece of string. But, the strongest single layer black jeans out there are from Rokker. They have a slide time that is over 6 seconds making them 50% stronger than leather. Don't obsess about the standard rating; many of the smaller players had all of their gear done to the lowest standard to save money, because if you go for a higher level and fail you have to pay all over again. My personal view is that Rokker's jeans are the best and strongest; they are just not the cheapest. There is of course the Spidi J& Dyneema. Over 4 seconds, AA rated and £280. Technically they are very, very, very dark blue but you would be hard pushed to tell. ML

I’ll have a chat with Motocap.com.au and see if they can explain the massive difference in results. I’m surprised you haven’t heard of Motocap! It’s an Australian based motorcycle gear ratings laboratory. They use CE EN test protocols to test jackets, pants and gloves but instead of pass/fail they give a star rating. Just like SHARP does for helmets.

@@pamvarnsverry2444 MOTOCAP tests only garments that are sold in shops and online in Australia or New Zealand. Satra tests what manufacturers send them for testing or certification. Therefore I trust MOTOCAP more because I only buy retail too. There could be a difference in materials between pre-market and post-market garments. Also there could be a difference between items sold in the UK, USA and Aus/NZ even with the same brand and model name.
@martinfoster5163
@martinfoster5163 Год назад
@@pamvarnsverry2444 Not exactly. I'm not saying UK/EU versions would be worse than AUS/NZ. It MIGHT be the other way around since AUS/NZ has no certification at all, similar to the USA in that regard. The real question is would manufacturers bother making a different version of a garment for different markets in the world? I don't know. Probably not but maybe. It's all very confusing. In any case, I make the assumption that the garments tested at MOTOCAP will be the same ones that are sold in the UK/EU because it's a much bigger marketplace. So I've bought top-rated kit per MOTOCAP, assuming that the UK version is the same. For example, I've bought RST and Draggin' garments that did very well on MOTOCAP tests but I bought them online in the UK from reputable retailers and then had them shipped to Mongolia where I live.

As far as I know John Doe doesn’t do a single-layer jean. I can’t see one on their website. Their jeans are also not properly CE approved. They suggest that they are on their site, but it is illegal to sell a motorcycle jean in Europe without armour and, with John Doe, the armour is not included. You cannot sell any CE approved jean without including at least the knee armour. For Level AA you have to supply knee and hips. Clearly these guys skirt around the edges of legality.
