This is why I'm glad the person I first bought a bike from was such a great guy. Very polite on the phone, answered all my questions, got the price lowered on the phone and he agreed to hold it for two days. I showed up to a bike in great condition and he did all the regular maintenance just before selling it, including an oil and spark plug change before he handed over to me. Too bad he sold it to me, I've been comparatively brutal to the machine! XD Luckily I plan to ride it until it dies. But if I ever have to sell a bike in the future, I'll make sure to pass on what he did for me and give the next guy the same amount of respect.

Would love to see a guide on how to check if a two stroke engine is in good nick or not, not sure what to check for myself but love the 2 strokers. I bought a used ktm 200 exc and found out it needed a lot more work and parts than I expected. Turned out to be a costly exercise to bring it up to safe condition but I enjoy working and learning about it while I work on the project.

Not too sure about this video. Look at the big picture. Get a good engine, in a decent year, from an owner who a) took great care of it, b) let it sit in the garage. Strip everything off and go through it. You have to - motorcycles are too dangerous. You'll find something somewhere. As long as there is compression, no clutch issues, no signs of a major wreck, bent frame or wheels, replace the parts and have fun with the bike. Most of the time, its a case of the bike sitting. Get a rebuild kit for the carb and that's it. Check the year on the tires, get new tubes in them.

Good informal video, i wish ive seen this video before i bought my first motorbike. I was too excited and inexpirenced and most of all i couldnt even test out the bike for myself since i didnt learn how to ride prior to buying it, when the bike came it was ridden to my location for the purchase, i was told only minor problems such as fairings , but when the actual bike came it was more than just fairings, i immediatly saw a broken speed meter worn out tyres and a bent handle, however to my disgust to the bike i wanted to decline but i was alone and he had brought his very intmidating friend that had intimidated me by making me feel as if they didnt come here for nothing, through me being intimidated and knowing nothing about the bike i bought it as the 4th owner where also stroke a cord for me not wanting the bike but i was really uneasy about telling them i didnt want it i ended up buying it for 1400 dollars. When i asked a biker friend who inspired me to look and teach me how to ride he immediatly told me i must of really meant only learning, because the bike ive bought was probaby worth 300 or 400 max price, i was too ashamed to tell him that i spend that much money on some junk like this so i asked him how much did he think it would cost to reapir and get it to stock, he told me about 200 to 300 for everything because judging from the oil being black and dirty the bike probably was never serviced and just added more oil to it so its really bad condition, now im here feeling really bad about my decision about buying a bike i really wished ive seen your video before i bought my bike! This should be standard information any beginner should know about used bike and what to look for. Although whats done is done i now know what to look for for my next purchase. Quick tip; When buying a bike check suspension, wheels, oil leaks, nasty noises when started etc. Throttle cables, bent fuel tap, ripped hand grips don't cost a lot to replace and don't necessarily need replacing. All the above on the bad list are gonna cause big problems and big money.👍

Very first thing I would do is take a flashlight and look closely at the oil. Watch for water in oil. Also grab rear wheel and check for excess play in swingarm. That's alot of work to replace. Especially on a old bike. Very, very important on four wheelers. Axle carrier bearings are a nightmare to replace. Hammers,heat and chisels. Yikes. Thumbs up to you.
@kennethrogers3687
@kennethrogers3687 7 лет назад
P.s. if you are throwing chains on your four wheeler, it's either swing arm bearings or axle carrier bearings. Your sloppy bearings are throwing off your chain alignment. There is a incredible force put on these and they don't last forever. Nothing does. Owners will neglect to replace these, because their a nightmare. You have been warned. Happy trails friends.

yeah most of that id agree with 100% but the extra oil can stay on the plates and in the side of the crank when changing it so even just starting it up can make it dirty looking again. i always put no offers over the phone due too most always try to jew again in person plus mines usually already low balled to sell to begin with. id add stuff about modified for performance on MX bikes thats always expensive just to keep up in general if you dont need the extra power (ex: kxf250 piston=$87, 280big bore piston=$143 plus jetting changes)

In the year 2020, you’re lucky to get your hands on a dirt bike, let alone have a seller allow you to negotiate and analyze every scratch on their dirt bike. The seller will have 50 other buyers lined up, begging to be bumped up in line. Parts of this video are useful, I like asking why they are selling, check compression, start the bike, ride it if they allow it. If it runs and feels good and it’s in your budget, buy it. You don’t have to buy the bike, but going into it if it’s not in your budget, don’t waste your time or the sellers. If you don’t like buying a “used” bike, go spend $11k on a new one.

I bought a 2015 CRF250R and we met the guy half way and he said he doesn’t have a title so it sucks so if you find a bike that’s perfect still check everything else

I have experience buying a pretty clapped bike so here's a couple tips I have. If you're looking at a 2 stroke, ask them about the top end and the last time it was replaced, let them talk, then remove the 2 bolts and 2 springs holding the pipe on and look into the cylinder. One this tells you how the piston and cylinder are doing and two it tells you if the guy is bullshitting you about everything else!! Double-check the case in front of the sprocket and make sure it's not busted and repaired with putty. Move the steering back and forth and make sure there is no play in the bearing cause that is expensive to fix. What you say in the video is right on about IF THEY WONT LET YOU TAKE THINGS OFF TO INSPECT THEN DONT BUY IT!!!That's all I can think of at the moment.

I bought my first bike out of pocket and I come from a blue collar family. Nothing in life will be given to you so there's no use complaining. Get a job and save what you can until you can afford a (even an older) bike. We all have to start somewhere and there's no shame in rocking something from the 80s. Once you have your foot in the door, you'll be able to upgrade your way up to what you want by swapping and selling your bike

I have a job and I'm saving up to buy a bike. If you get a job, you'll be able to buy the bike yourself. I refuse to have my parents pay a cent for that bike. That way, when I do get it, it's mine. Plus, if you buy it yourself, you'll be proud of yourself for buying it. Good luck in getting a bike. If you do end up getting one, have fun. Have a great night.

I look for a versatile offroad bike. I ride gnc terrain. A kdx200 or xr600 instead of a cr250. Ive got a cr250 so iam doing suspension jetting. Fmf burly pipe pwk38 carb stock 96 reeds.

This is more information than i could ever hope to obtain. Thanks for the killer video, man! This will be my first time buying, and I'm sort of in between buying a working used bike and a project bike. I'm leaning more towards a project bike, but i'm unsure of the level of expenses that it may entail. If it is a non working bike, what sort of money should i expect to be putting in, generally speaking? One of the benefits of a project bike would be learning the ins and outs of the way everything works and goes together, but would it just be smarter to get a working bike?

@rmatvmc 6 лет назад
Buying a non working bike can be a big risk. Also kind of depends on how old the bike is and if you feel like the current owner is being honest about everything that needs work. We did an 04 YZ250 build for an employee who bought a non running bike for about $600. Turned out we had to completely rebuild the motor and some other parts and it ended being thousands of dollars for everything it needed. You can learn about any bike just doing maintenance on your own. I'd buy a running bike so you can have fun and later on, i'd then buy a project bike. I've seen a lot of "project" bikes turn into "never complete" bikes. Hope this helps. ~Chase

Biggest thing for me... "has it ever been to the sand?" If they say yes no matter what don't buy it. You can tell by either a flag mount, hole drilled in the fender, or find a crevice where sand could be cuz one time in the sand the bike will always have sand in it somewhere

It would be more beneficial if you had a check list that you could go through to buy any bike. Cosmetic things from laying the bike over is going to be common and expected. A compression check is the most important. Also getting recipes and documented repairs.

You take a huge gamble buying a used dirt bike from someone you don't know. Steering stem bearings, swingarm bearings and bushings, crank and bottom end etc. I have sold most of my older bikes to friends that wanted to start riding. If you purchase a bike from someone that has extra parts like clutch cables, brake pads, extra air filters it can be a good sign that they probably take care of there bikes. I have included similar items when I sold my old race bikes.

I got my yamaha yz 85 05 a while back and it seemed in good condition but the guy was sketchy and he barely answers any of my questions but I checked the coolant and stuff and it seemed fine then I rode it through all the gears and It was fine but when I brought it home and I started it up it sounded different and I put it in first gear and it would just died so I would start it up and give it gas as I put it in first and as I was giving a gas it was moving forward so I knew the clutch was slipping so I let out the clutch and it started making clicking sound and it did the same for 12345 well it was wierd bc I was working fine earlier and I check the coolant and it was low and then I check the oil and the coolant was in the oil so it makes it milky. so this guy said he did a bottom and top end rebuild but when he did the bottom end rebuild he put it together wrong and the shifting forks were in the wrong position and they bent
