Totally Agree, Plus no Bragging about how much you are getting per Mile. No half naked wives selling merchandise. Just straight up Trucking information.
Maintenance, Maintenance and more Maintenance, don't be afraid to do oil changes and don't go by what the manufacturers say, don't be afraid to send oil samples to check viscosity, I have personally always ran Mobile Delvac since I learned that it runs the longest of the truck oils shy of going synthetic and even Delvac starts losing viscosity at 12,000 miles so I did oil changes at 10,000 miles and the only engine I had overhauled went 1.8 million miles before the overhaul, the more electronics You have the cleaner You need to keep it and when purchasing a used truck ask for Maintenance records people who actually take care of their equipment keep a log of everything done to the truck and receipts for tax purposes especially for major repairs Engines, Transmissions and Rearends ,if it looks like it wasn't maintained by all means walk away.
Looking at a 2013 Volvo vnl with 678k miles , manual transmission and a isx15 and a 2017 Volvo with a D-12 I shift 800k miles- I’ve owned both of these motors pre- def generation and both excellent motors. I would appreciate any wisdom. Thank you
The first thing is : ask yourself if the massive headaches and heartache is worth the extra pocket change? Because you can make more , but you can easily lose your rump too!
There aren't many used trucks available. But you said don.t buy a truck with 500k and a lot of hours, and then say don,t buy a truck from a lease company with low hours and 500k. Which is worse? If you have tried to buy used lately It.s a nightmare. Many people are buying before they see them.
It's simple buy a truck out of a lease fleet or a company fleet were maintenance and service of the truck was priority, most of them start getting rid of their trucks at 500 to 600 thousand miles. Never buy a truck from a run of the mill dealer usually a name brand dealer is better Pete, KW ect. Never buy a truck from and owner operator unless you you know the truck and how it was taken care of, the worst is an owner operator running a piece of junk. Here is the list in my opinion has the best resale value in the market best to worst. KW, Pete, Western Star, Freightliner, International, Volvo. Napa has a good fleet of used trucks.
I would add, crusty old zip ties, galvanized turbo/CAC clamps, all of those look bright and shiny! water clamps and silicon hoses, CAC /turbo connector tubes for indent, turbo clamps for rotation.. if they are pointed down.. NO mech would install them like that lol. Hammer tap U-Bolts/Huck Bolts for breakage.. and top main coolant into therm housing! As you say, Watch for neglect in the small details and you can tell how much the truck was cared for!
I just stumbled across your channel this week , being a mechanic of 10 years and now making the jump to getting into owning big rigs,(doing most repairs and maintenance myself)I have found your videos to be EXTREMELY useful and packed full of knowledge! Thanks for being a honest guy with the knowledge , willing to share!
I own a bus, not a big rig, but I'm learning about diesels and have done all my maintenance and repairs myself so far. Been shade tree wrenching for almost 40 years, so I have the tools and enough knowledge/experience to jump right in.
Thank you for the explanations and recommendations im excited to get started in the trucking industry im about to be 18 next month and will be getting my CDL A and have already paid for the schooling. I wouldnt have even thought of trucking without youtube videos explaining all of this so thank you again!!
Ive watched alot of you tube videos on trucking and yours are always the most knowledgeable. I've been with Landstar a few months now and everything is going well. Thanks for the info.
I'm kind of curious. If a truck has a smart idle system in which the engine is running at some capacity ( I'm not sure how much,) how much would that count towards the mileage/hrs of an overhaul?
Take the amount of hours and divide by 24 to see how many days that truck has been operated for. Then subtract 10 hours for every day to get average total load time
WOW!!!! This is great video with great honest and clear information. I would hire you as a 3rd party inspectior in a heartbeat! Thanks Peace and blessings
Just bought a 07 sterling at 9500 MBE4000 engine from a private seller. Found a mechanic on fb who did inspections. …..he came out and hooked up the diagnostics computer to the trucks computer. He checked for codes, hours, combustions tests etc….truck only had 7,000 hours with 151,000 miles…..checked brakes suspension etc….checked out pretty good…gotta do brake pads and shocks tho. Hopefully it holds up
Nice thorough video. I just discovered your channel. Happy with your videos. All valuable information for me. I appreciate your time and efforts. Thank you. You stay safe my brother. I definitely decided to subscribe.
I lile your videos, but i need your help if possible. I have volvo 2011. Truck is bouncing at 60 and goes away around 70 but still little noticeable but. I feel the bouncing in the front. new tires all over, take it to alignment yesterday they said all 3 axles are str8, king pins good. What can cause this bouncing. ? Thank you
I completely agree with you about the EGR my Isx 600 goes through more frequent oil changes of not it seems the oil gets pasty like. So what do you think about the crank case filter ? How often on the change and should you replace the sensor at same time sir .
Hey Ryan! I live in Ohio about 15 minutes from canton, I’m looking at buying a semi to turn it into a camper hauler, I went and looked at other and I felt it had a miss, has an n14.. what do you charge for a PPI if I wanted you to look at it?
"Flux capacitor" hahaha BTTF... great info! Selling my 2013 T660 and getting a newer model soon, definitely going through this video before checking the new prospects as a reminder.
I mean coming from Working on Cars i mean its all really not tooo Different of a concept of things Went to school and A lot of things we did for just working on cars we had the diesel techs in with us aswell. im not saying its as easy im saying it wouldn't be too hard to adjust to.
Nice SEABEE Sticker, ACB-1 2000-2004 Headquarters Co. Armory here, great videos very informative. Can you do a EGR delete and keep the other DPF stuff on and it run fine with maybe a tune? Anything to get more longevity out of your engine along with PMs. Thank you.
I was there from 2004 to 2008. I came there on March 2004. I was in the CM shop, Alpha company. When you do a mission delete, all the components stay on the truck and look normal. The EGR valve won't function and the EGR core will be blocked off. And you just put a hole in the DPF filter. The main problem is that you have to be concerned about overheating the turbo with a bad tune.
Be careful getting your truck washed with rusty oil pan the high pressure can blow a hole in it and you can either replace it right there or like I did and haul ass back to your shop if it's close but will have oil everywhere.
Thanks, Ryan! This info is beneficial. You are a blessing to many who had no idea what to look for in purchasing a truck and were too proud to ask. I have the most respect and appreciation for you and your integrity.
Awesome video just wish you would've focused more on engine. You told us at the beginning that a rebuild could cost 40k or so. I'm worried about the MOST expensive repairs when buying a used semi..not shocks , brakes , tires ect (which can add up yes but not amount to a small fraction of a rebuild). More engine checks woulda made this video a 10. Other then that 2 thumbs up!
Trucks with 500 000 miles and very low hours in my opinion never got worm up , drivers start the truck and go. That's not good for engine. It's normal to keep truck running 20, 30 minutes, specially if you pulling heavy load in winter time. The best thing is to buy brand new truck, learn how to change oil and grease it. Worm it up every time and don't worry about milages and hrs.
Thank you for your videos. I have a question regarding the bunker heater I have in my truck. I had an issue with my ap unit before but the heater was still working. Now the heater is not working at all. I keep getting a yellow triangle error on there. First I did a total rebuild. Changed all casket, fuel pump, fuel line, still no heat. What do you recommend I do next?
I have a 2016 t660, isx with 460k miles 9k hours. I was thinking about starting to use a gallon of Lucas oil stabilizer when I do my oil changes. What is your opinion of the stuff? Would you recommend adding it?
Ryan love your vedios, you give a lot of detail to look for when you buy a truck! The best for me is when you actually are doing the repairs or the way you do it step by step!
Thanks for the Video... very good info... yeah i made sure to subscribe 😊 i will be watching your videos for training.. 🙏🙏 thanks Man... really helpful..
Ok you did pretty go .but you left out some major pieces to the puzzle. 1 looking at a truck ack if you can have it put on a dyno this will tell you just about everything about it hp fuel mpg and it can bring up codes .also it will tell a good dyno tech if there are a brake hanging vibration etc. Take an oil sample from motor, transmission and rears not speed co. Send it to an independent company they will send you a spec sheet with what maybe wrong. Ecms can be changed a dyno will also check the ecm accuracy. Tire you don't put lug tires on unless you are in a dump truck a quality closed shoulder tire will get you mpg. That probably other ways like you said a 3rd party or friend and drive it . A paccar motor or volvo is real expensive. Oh 1 more thing only 1 ifta sticker on the side of truck if you have more you can get a bs ticket for more than 1 ....pa and a few other can fine you 350.00 for each sticker per side . Do you research on a truck if you can get a previous owner or records is helpful also you can call a place ...rig dig to give you more info.happy trails with an old w 900 l no regen very good mpg with a cat ......stay safe
A lot of the freightliners in the fleet I work on were “safe “ (90% of them) to the half million mile mark … By that I meant 90% of our trucks went close to 500,000 with little to moderate repairs. The occasional engine light usually a simple sensor (inlet or outlet NOx sometimes a pressure sensor )once ina while needed DPFS. Inspections tires brakes ocational wheel seal . Most one boxes on our fleet start shutting the bees around 550,000 on average We had one at 380,000 need one and another at 739,000 needing one
I don't know what ys about ? First you have signed check.,then start preparing you self for divorce, other bumps finaly buncrapsy. Then you have looking for new job and start everything from scratch . Good luck !
As I’m watching your video tomorrow I’m buying 2020 T680 with Cummins eng. with 455k and it’s Steven team truck, but I’m so worried as you said it’s possible it’ll break down, because 455k mls is too much for 2020 I don’t have any maintenance record also I’m gonna lease it with a company
I'm sorry but if I'm paying $50 or $60,000 for a truck like you mentioned and then there's 5 to 10,000 work to be done I ain't buying it. A 50 or $60,000 truck better be ready to go and be fixed already.
Hey Rayan how you doing! Hey need a pair of those suspenders you got on, those I can't find, you should sell some of them! Other than that, how you doing, hope all is well! Teddy Bear! Big 10-4!
Great info, the ironic thing to today's video walk around third party pre-buy inspection as you are talking about the brakes steering knuckle shackles springs I was literally last night looking at my class a CDL book and it just helped to reiterate what you did so thanks again great job thank you
Can you help me understand gear ratios I need to know what is a good gear ratio for a balance of fuel and power and should I purchase a manual versus an automatic
I use Mobile Delvac as well in my truck. Change it every 15 to 20k miles. Nice thing about my Volvo is that it uses three oil filters, so I can go a bit further between changes before the oil starts to change color.
Have You ever done oil sampling because I ran Delvac for decades and it starts to lose it's viscosity at about 12,000 miles, Rotella loses it's viscosity about 8,000 miles.
I disagree with you about oil change and service intervals on lease units. Most leasing companies want to keep the warranty as long as possible on these units and that means following mfg suggested service intervals. The company i work for does 40k or every 3rd 90 day inspection (whichever comes first). I cant speak for big names like penske but the smaller leasers treat these trucks like an investment, not a cost. The issue is normally the leaser in the equation, keeping trucks away from the shop or even the yard, switch seating, and a general nonchalant attitude because its “not their truck” is what kills them.
Noisy train your probably within 1000 feet of tracks great video I bought around 10 acres land in Montana in a great location to relocate to in a centralized area near interstates looking at buying a used truck with probably an older pre pollution cat or Detroit Diesel engine in the process now of studying older engines and transmissions and different trucks probably go peterbuilt or something else I don’t want nothing new or anything newer then 06 it’s all junk unless your in California and forced to use newer trucks.
I'm looking at your video for the first time, and it is so informative. If I follow your instructions to go over a used truck and have a diesel mechanic clear the truck and hook a computer to it to get all of the information as you said. Will a used truck with low idol hours will it be a good buy for 60 to 65k
Bearing seals , crankshaft seals.....have a metal spring sandwiched in-between rubber which the rubber is what contacts the shaft and I believe the spring is there to keep a tight fit between the seal and shaft thus maybe keeping dirt and debris out . I like to grease the shaft and contact point of seal when able . If that rubber wears away then the spring comes in contact with the shaft thus if not caught in time will wear a groove in shaft . Which then usually the shaft has to be replaced , welded and machined , or resleeved and hopefully that is the least of your problems .
40:36 i had an old man sell me a flux capacitor once. After he installed it, he told me in order to get what i wanted out of it, i needed to achieve 88 mph😅
By the way when are you going to advertise those suspenders , there xool like them, would like to get some! Or you should sell or market them , called Suspenders by Rayan!
