Listen to the man, with 23 years as owner operator I've been there done that. Just remember one thing, just because you buy new truck 160k or more, does not mean shippers will pay you more than a used 40k, 50k, 60k used truck. And even before buying the rig, make sure you have work for that truck.

Thanks Ryan, because of you and your channel (this video in particular) I made a good purchase on my 1st. truck. I made sure that I purchased a truck with an APU installed since it went into service. 2ndly. I ensured to have a pre purchase inspection (3rd. party technician present) done on the truck before I signed the deal.👍🏾 The truck has 627,839 miles, with engine hours of 13,339.55 thanks to the APU. Technically, if the truck didn't have an APU, the engine hours might've been in the lower 20,000's. With hours within the 20,000-25,000 range, I'd have little to no time before the truck would require a rebuild. Again, thanks for your content.

You make a good argument for the earlier emissions trucks. Most people I’ve heard advise staying away from those years. What year did they change to the more advanced sensors, and is there a way to know which it has when looking at a used truck?

As long as you can do the little stuff, like change out a light and replace a wiper blade or a mudflap, you can do ok. The little stuff is where they really stick it to you. The big stuff, yeah the labor is expensive, but if they can get you back on the road a couple days quicker than you could do yourself, then you can make that extra money right back with the extra days of driving. You just want to have a knowledgeable hometown mechanic to serve as a base, maybe you can call once in a while for advice or something, and if you pay close attention to Google reviews when selecting a shop on the road, you can eliminate quite a few headaches. I try to always shoot for at least a 4 star rating out of 5, but they have to have at least like 25 reviews before that number starts to carry any weight. And that's another thing about little jobs - if you have to wait 3 hours to change a lightbulb, you're also getting killed on the time, in addition to the astronomical labor. Fifty bucks for a 3 minute job is like $1000 per hour, plus you waited 3 hours to get in. But if you wait 3 hours to get in for a big job that they can knock out in 4 hours where it'd take you 3 days, then you're not in real bad shape.

The main thing I worry about in a used truck is head gasket leaks. I know there are drivers who over RPM the engine while jaking either intentionally or they don't know what that does to the head gasket. I don't want any issues like that which can make the heating system in the cab wonky. How do we find out if that is the case on a used truck?

Something that needs to be mentioned, just because you have a Cummins in a Kenworth doesn’t mean you can go to a Peterbilt for repairs, especially if they need ECM programming. I learned the hard way. I had to pay Peterbilt AND THEN Kenworth to uninstall the Peterbilt program and then update the Kenworth program in my 2020 T680.

Was looking to up my weight and length to CDL levels but even the older 450's and 550's that run my favorite 7.3 Powerstrokes cost as much as an old semi. And I could get a 48' flatbed cheaper than a 40' gooseneck, not to mention that the loads available for flatbed semi are far FAR more plentiful! Decisions decisions...

If you could install an 2 or 3 speed differential which gear setups would you go with and why ? Do you know about skip shifting ? When you're carrying a small load it allows you to skip gears like with a shift pattern of 2 4 6 8 10 . Though I don't know if that's good or bad on the power train specifically the cluch . So I'm not saying to do skip shifting but I can't stop you . I actually learned that with Swift 20 years ago by accident . Tried it on my personal POV but got a lot of gear chatter which then assumed it was a bad thing to do but later on relised that diesel truck transmissions aren't identical to gas transmissions ; although i tried it on an box truck with an diesel engine and got the same results as my POV . Although i bet with your 18 speed you can skip two gears at a time and maybe with a load up to 19,500 lbs or maybe more. I'm thinking for a 3 speed diff gear ratios of 1.73 , 2.73 , and 3.73 would work great in an on-road semi . 1.73 for no load or a very light load , 3.73 for heavy loads and hill climbing , and with the 2.73 falling somewhere in-between hopefully automatic switching to make things easier . Sounds very expensive , might not be worth it though . Let me know what you think . Thanks !

I'd like to get your thoughts on restarting a 1999 truck; run in the S. West. Is it to costly to restart up a truck that's been out of service for 5 yrs.? It has 50 gals of old diesel in it alone; I read I'd have to have drained out. One shop said it probably needs new wheel seals that'll cost $1,200 to do just on the tractor. Of course I need batteries, too. What else may have to be done? The tractor is a 1999 KW t200, DD 12.7, with 1M on it. I put new alt, tires, brakes, kingpins & of course reg. service. My 2007 flatbed has a mere 75,000 miles on it. I drove a couple yrs during construction season. I shut it all down in 2015 do to crazy drivers & DOT "New Entrant" harassment. (I've been thinking about getting back in because rates seem much better now). There would probably be problems with trailer setting, too. Thx for all your vids. PS the only thing I do on may own is service; for many reasons. (My alternative is to buy a used truck with 500k miles, if they are available; for $52k). Thx.

Retreads get too hot on long runs. They're for local work, like a dump truck that drives a few miles and then parks for an hour. Plus they're horrible for MPG. Basically if curb damage and debris on rough terrain will kill your tire before tread wear will, then buy retreads. That's why the big fleets buy expensive tires - they have a team of bean counters measuring total cost per mile, and retreads don't hold up at all in long haul.
