We’ve all been there, a brand new service member getting to the wonderful fleet read to take on the world only to realize that you DON’T HAVE A CAR! So you do what most do and go to the nearest dealer outside the base and get yourself into a car without knowing what you’re really getting yourself into all while getting taken advantage of along the way…

Gunny you’re so helpful. I want to thank you from the bottom of heart. My son went to Boot Camp yesterday. You answered so many of the questions that I might had. You definitely have made this journey easier for us. I joined some of the FB groups for parents that you suggested in one video and I’m so happy I can follow what my son will be doing on a weekly basis.

My Son got an electric scooter with his bday money because we couldn't afford to add him to our car insurance with AAA I think he will be ready for a car and will be able to afford it now that he has been saving his money during bootcamp training...will definitely share this video with him...Keep those videos coming...blessings

Thanks for the videos Gunny. As someone who’s currently waiting for a Recon Contract and is training for Recon, do you think you’d be able to make a video on what the initial training is for Recon? Such as the RPAT. I’ve heard about it on the internet, but I’ve only found mixed sources that were a few years old.

When you get stationed at your fleet do they tell you how long you’re gonna be there for? ( if that’s how it works)

My son is one year in now. He was using a bicycle at his PDS. Now he wants to buy a vehicle. He is wanting to get a used one. Plus his PDS is in state with cheaper taxes so he is thinking buying one there & registering it there. My concern is he is getting sent out of the country next year for about 6 months. He assumes it would be fine leaving the car on base while he is gone. Any tips?

Ah yes the bicycle! Many good memories with those and skateboards lol. I recommend used as a first time buyer and also registering it the cheapest place he can. As for deploying and leaving his car behind, most just leave it in the parking lot. It’s allowed but it will be unattended the entire time. I would send mine home to my parents so they could watch it/take care of it while I was away. Worked out well each time. That’s what I’d suggest.

You can definitely join at 19. Did you graduate HS? Also yes we do have sports in the Marines including soccer and depending on where you’re stationed there will be try outs. Lastly we have over 300 jobs. If you wanna find out more, contact your local recruiter, and schedule a sit down with them

Recon is specialized infantry. Infantry is just regular infantry. Think recon as better trained and more capable than traditional infantry.

My advice: Don’t. You don’t need a car that much tbh. Especially as an E3 when your paychecks aren’t that much as it is. I mean if you want, go for it but having been there and done that before, it wasn’t worth it IMO. That’s my .02. I’d find something something sub 20k if I were you (which there are plenty of nice cars out there in that range). If you want little to no debt, definitely don’t do it lol

Not sure of your rank, Marine but I think you're a Staff Sergeant? Anyway, if you're still in the recruiting billet, I have a quick idea to throw out to you that you may want to pass on to any new recruits headed to Boot Camp: Get familiar with how to use a needle and thread before you get to MCRD. I remember having to sew countless buttons on my utility uniforms. Just sayin'. Semper Fi.
