How To Bypass Stock Sur-Ron Battery for more power!

In today's video we go over how to do the battery bms mod for a stock surron This will allow you to pull almost 30% more power from the battery as long as you have an upgraded controller. Enjoy the video!
Due to our goal to uphold high safety standards, we've decided to stop selling BMS bypass kits for the time being. This video will be left up as a guide to educate consumers on the proper way to do this modification should you chose to do so. Any modifications done to your battery/motorcycle are done so at your own risk. By bypassing your battery, you're also bypassing the built in precharge circuit within the BMS. This offers critical safety control for inrush current to your controller. At minimum a pre-charge resistor should be used should you choose to continue. This modification is not considered safe and our video is not a safety guide. Mishandling lithium batteries can lead to fires, explosion and even death. These are not toys and should be treated with great care. Lithium products should always be stored away from any flammable objects ideally in a metal containment device.

I really appreciate your instructional videos. I’m an old guy who got one of the last red ones W/the X controller. I only recently became aware of the 72 volt battery upgrade and want to do it. I want to get everything I will need to do it properly the first time I order. Almost all of my riding is on the street. I have the 17” SuperMoto wheels and tires. I paid for an Onyx RCR on Indiegogo, frustrated because it was taking sooo long to get delivery, I was watching a SurRon video and commenting on how good it looked and my wife got tired of me praising it and said “if you like it so much, get one”. Not wanting to offend the wife I did. Both ebikes were delivered the same day, about 2 hours apart. After 6-8 months I sold the RCR. The SurRon looked professionally built and the suspension on the RCR was set up for someone a lot heavier. Thanks again for the info. Do you do any work on customer bikes? What state are you in? I wouldn’t mind a road trip. The dog and I need to get out of the house!

People that don't use your kit and don't understand li chemistry batteries or bypass with knowledge of why stock BMS failed are asking for further damage to battery (definitely don't charge or keep in home) If you understand cell spec and controllers set up fine go for it. If your loading at the full 10amp constant you'll probably reduce the lifecycle further, just s heads up but great to see you point some of this out 👍

For sure risks associated with doing this. We obviously don’t ever recommend holding cells wide open at their full discharge spec for long periods of time, this is simply to get a little extra power of the punch and not so that people can go 60mph on the highway.

@@alexs5373 These are all things we hope our customers educate themselves on as we obviously can't cover every safety aspect of these controllers. Ours are setup to be very simple and anything the end user can adjust will not determine whether or not their bike will work just how it will work. We think a lot of users want adjustability and we want to offer that just not more than they can handle. Our controllers have no limits and that's a two way street because I'm sure at some point someone inexperienced will do something their bike isn't capable of and get mad at us despite our warnings. On the flip side, we don't want constant emails saying they wish they could adjust their controller.

@emotobros
@emotobros 3 года назад
Definitely true. It can be hard to make crimps on insulated connectors and even the large non insulated connectors without getting a flat side on them. You make a good point and for anyone reading this, if you have a sharp edge, try to pound it down a bit and add a bit more tape around the heat shrink. Luckily, the wires inside the battery don’t move around much but it’s certainly something to lookout for.

Sorry for the dumb question but when you do this mod I presume you are trading at-the-throttle-power for run time? And if that's the case how much run time are you typically looking at losing if you do the mod?
@emotobros
@emotobros 3 года назад
That depends entirely on throttle usage. You could do the mod and use the same amount of battery if you are only occasionally going above 5000W. Or you could be constantly gettin it and run through it quicker. Most range you could lose is 29% and that’s only if you were constantly wide open.

The only problem with the new BMS is that it’ll typically require re-soldering the lead wires which most aren’t comfortable with though we agree, it is the better solution. The switch would work as long as you can find a switch that can handle that kind of current 🤘🏽

@aidangillett5396
@aidangillett5396 2 года назад
Does the stock BMS balance on discharge though? Since if you bypass it and you have a weak cell, you are still taking the risk of damaging your battery at well above the cut-off voltage, as that is simply an average voltage of all cells combined. having 2 weak cells rapidly discharge down to 2.8v and the rest at 3.6v would show 56v and you think you're well above safe levels, however those weak cells are way below safe levels and will rapidly degrade/die or catch fire
@emotobros
@emotobros 2 года назад
The BMS balances during the charging cycle so bypassing the discharge side of the battery does not hinder the balancing function of the BMS. Even so, the low voltage we recommend in the video takes this into consideration and leaves some buffer room for cells that are sagging a bit behind in voltage.

@emotobros 3 года назад
Glad most people are enjoying the video, but we wanted to reiterate a few things being brought up. First, this mod only works with an aftermarket controller as mentioned in the video. Also, please understand the limitations of what you are doing. The cells are rated for 10amps continuously, but you will be stressing them if you are constantly wide open at 7000W. If you find yourself always full throttle it's probably better to get a 72V battery or a higher discharge 60V. This mod is to give a bit more power off the bottom end but isn't meant to be used to cruise at 50mph+ down the freeway. That'll stress the cells and drain the battery very quickly. There should be no worry about charging as it functions exactly the same as it did before the mod, but like we mention, you must monitor your batteries voltage after doing this mod. There is no longer a limit on the battery and our controllers don't have limits so responsibility of your battery's and bike's health is on YOU. Take time to look into ways of being safe around lithium batteries before doing this especially if you are new to this kind of stuff. It's more dangerous than could ever be conveyed through a youtube comment. Any modifications done to your battery/motorcycle are done so at your own risk. By bypassing your battery, you're also bypassing the built in precharge circuit within the BMS. This offers critical safety control for inrush current to your controller. This modification is not considered safe and our video is not a safety guide. Mishandling lithium batteries can lead to fires, explosion and even death. These are not toys and should be treated with great care. Lithium products should always be stored away from any flammable objects ideally in a metal containment device.

Ok, ive built many battery builds before, and maybe you can clarify something...without having my Surron in front of me (its on backorder), it looks like you are disconnecting the LOAD side of the BMS..that is to say that the BMS no longer has control of limiting the amount of power pulled from the battery but also means that although it will control the charge and be able to cut it off above 4.25 volts it will not be able to cut power to the bike if the charge falls below 2.5 volts???
@emotobros
@emotobros 3 года назад
Yes that’s correct. It’s discharge only so you still get balancing and shutoff on the charge side but can actually use the cells to their potential on discharge. The controller will shut the bike off below a certain voltage but our display gives a live voltage read out that should riders should not go below. This isn’t a mod for people who want the safest setup or those who don’t understand what this is doing.
@johnnyzee383
@johnnyzee383 3 года назад
@@emotobros Ok, the problem with this is that if you have one or two weak cells and they go below 2.5 volts while the other guys are at 2.8 ( I have built packs using the Panasonic PF cells and got some imbalance issues after many cycles), then while you may think that 40 volts is ok (theoretically each cell in series at 2.5 volts x 16 in series), if an imbalance occurs and one or more cells are now lower than this, they can "bottom out" very quickly and be damaged. If I do this modification I would push the LVC to 45 volts to be safe.
@emotobros
@emotobros 3 года назад
Our LVC Is 52V there is absolutely no way we would ever recommend people running there cells to 2.5V each. Most graphs of the PF show a serious decrease in cycles below 3.0V/cell
@johnnyzee383
@johnnyzee383 3 года назад
@@emotobros No of course not, but after installing a watt meter, either the BMS or stock x controller was cutting the bike out at a very conservative 3.4 volts per cell.(54.4 volts ).according to the watt meter I was getting about 1500 whs out of the (31 ah x 60 volt) 1900 Wh's the battery is rated for. On the discharge curve for these cells, @ 2 amp discharge 3.4 volts represents about 35% capacity left. not 10% on the display. I think they programmed the meter to calculate percentage vs voltage based on the .5 amp discharge curve, however I got an estimate of about 15-20 amps of current draw (from my watt meter) at roughly 45 KPH so I consider this a low average of current draw ( almost 2 amp per cell). A LVC of 52V would (@ 2 amp discharge) represent about 10% remaining.
@emotobros
@emotobros 3 года назад
Yeah I think the stock LVC is set higher than the capacity suggests it should be. We think 51-52V is totally fine for the LVC. I’d also be surprised if the display read out was based on anything other than strictly voltage.
