Brilliantly explained Steve ! Funny how some vids attempting to show the same thing with 40k or 50k views simply fail to explain it as clearly as you have. Well done kind sir and lucky me I have the exact same Tekton wrench and a bench vice.

I hope you also checked your exercise weights. I had a creeping feeling that it would be easy for manufacturers to overcharge by underweighting them. Sure enough, NO brand matched the marked weight. They ranged up to 10% off, usually under weight.

You are the only person that uses an Allen key method, everyone else undoes the end nut. No good if my torque wrench doesn't have it. Thanks.

Is a torque wrench linear? I would like to see a check at 10% and 90% of the wrenches range. I just wonder that with just one adjustment screw, would it be more accurate to calibrate at 50% of range.

on amazon, I just bought the 1/2in 10-150lb torque wrench and it does say that it does come pre-calibrated with a 4% +/- accuracy ready to use. So, looks like they are knowing there are some slight variations with these things but overall I think they are pretty accurate for most things.

It’s MAY 2024 and I don’t think you have to do math. The spring TENSION and length of the handle have been taken into consideration for the torque wrench. So essentially if you hung the weight at the beginning of the handle, the torque wrench should click at the weight you were testing. However, there is the weight of the torque wrench itself that is also pulling down, so if you were testing 20 pounds I would put your torque wrench may be at 21 Just a smidge over 20. BTW, UR torque wrench did click at the beginning of the handle. If you had adjusted the torque just a smidge, I think the wrench would have held and was in perfect calibration.

perfect! now all I gota do is find some bolts, drill some holes and bolt my vice to a table! although I was planning on calibrating one of mine at 50 lbs (I've got multiple as well) so hopefully they can hold that otherwise awesome video!

hey steve great video, just my 2 cents- better to use a socket in the wise rather than the actual torque wrench drive shaft!!! also at 1:56 marking shouldn't be on the aluminum rim on the T.wrench that will damage the mechanism, all OEM's recommend to calibrate from the center of the handle of the torque wrench for accurate results. I have the same model and you can take the measurement to 1.5ft on the handle rather than the body. I use a 19mm bolt welded on a steel plate to do the calibration, that removes any need for the vice ... hope that helps

Bruh you could add a mile long cheater bar as long as you calculate for the added weight and length. I have a problem with everybody ignoring the weight of the torque wrench itself; and I have yet to see anybody mention that.

Seems like it would be more accurate to hang the weight closer to the end of the handle, since that's where I usually apply force when torquing(?)

It’s called a foot pound for a reason. If it’s set at 20fp, it’ll always click at 20fp, even if you put a 2 foot extension on it

So here is the metric formula: force=weight×9.81×length of the tape marking. If the weight is 10 kg and the tape marking is 0.4 m it should look like this: 10kg×9.81=98.1. 98.1×0.4=39.2 NM. If you put weight of 10 kg to 04 m lenght the wrench should click on 39.2 NM. Hope I was clear.

That is not correct. Force (F) = mass (m) x gravity (g). Torque (T) = F x distance (d). T = F x d = m x g x d. Are you saying the mass is 10 kg or the weight is 10 kg? You said weight which is a force so it already includes the acceleration of gravity which is 9.81 m/s-2.

Nice! Simplest solution. However, aren't torque wrenchs supposed to be pulled at the handle? And would this make a difference in the calibration if not measured at a point along the handle?
@TahoeSteve
@TahoeSteve 3 года назад
Honestly, I'm not sure. I just did it the way I was taught and it gets me close enough to have peace of mind that i am not gonna over torque my parts. if I needed to ever do anything super precise, I would probably just borrow a higher quality torque wrench.
@lcervantes8505
@lcervantes8505 3 года назад
@@TahoeSteve same here. The measurement was close enough from the center of the rachet when adjusted for the weight setting, and wasn't off more than 4lbs.
@deadliftD
@deadliftD 3 года назад
If he were to measure 18" instead of 12" then the torque setting would need to be set at 30 ft lbs instead of 20, and the weight applied 6' further down the shaft of the tool. That makes sense because the further out you apply the same force, the higher the torque setting needs to be to just be able to get it to click. There could however be a slight difference in the weight uniformity of the tool between the shaft and handle area which could throw off the calibration a little. But assuming there is a constant density of material along the entire tool and assuming the clicking mechanism operates uniformly regardless of where the force is applied, it wouldn't matter.

why did you put the blue tape in the nm (12") and not a litlle longer than 12", near the site where we put the hand to operate the wrench?
@PlatypusPerspective
@PlatypusPerspective 16 дней назад
Unfortunately, many people giving instructions don't realize that doing it this way will be inaccurate, and they just use a handy distance like 12" so as to have a simple force calculation. The ring on the handgrip, called the Loading Ring or Loading Point, indicates the correct radius length. The force should be applied over that length, and the force/mass calculation done as a ratio of that distance to the 1 foot or 12 inch value depending on the units being used.

@larryb51
@larryb51 3 года назад
Thanks, I learned something new today from your video, and some of the comments below. However, unless you had an accurate way to measure the mass of those weights, you are assuming they are correct. If each 10 lb weight was 9.5 lbs (and I wouldn't be surprised), you may have brought your torque wrench out of spec. I really like David Mitchell's suggestion though and check the torque throughout the range.
@schadlarry
@schadlarry 3 года назад
That was my though too, you need to verify the weight of the weights. Cool video though as I'm probably going to buy some torque wrenches for the bike and truck. Tired of just doing tight enough.

Hi i have 2nm-24nm 1/4 torque wrench may be you can give me advise how many kg i can use and what distance the marker on the handle to calibrate thanks
@audiophileman7047
@audiophileman7047 Год назад
I wouldn't do it this way. Torque (ft-lbs) = Distance (feet) x Force (lbs). Distance is the "Torque Arm" where the force is applied, and the force is applied at the handle. I would measure from the handle to the center of the drive shaft. To figure the weight to hang at the handle, I'd use this formula: x lbs = 20 ft-lbs / Distance in ft. For example: x lbs = 20 ft-lbs / 1.25 feet = 16 lbs. You would hang 16 lbs at the handle in this example to get a 20 ft-lb torque. You could play with the numbers to figure out a way to get something rounded to your weight. The other thing I have a concern about is that you tested the torque at just the lower end of the the wrench's range. According to the official ASME method, torque wrenches are tested at 20%, 60%, and 100% of the wrench's range. That is three measurements across the range. Even if you find out the low range is good with your method, what about he mid-range and the upper range? It would be hard to use your method to check the mid-range and upper range of wrenches that measures higher torque. It would probably be a better idea to have a pro calibrate your torque wrenches if you want them to be more accurate and to spec.

The task of calibrating a click torque wrench has me somewhat baffled. Some use the grub screw, as in this video to calibrate and some calibrate by adjusting the threaded locking peg cup that screws into both the handle and the hex end nut.

Good point. Yes it does need to be considered since it adds to the weight on the mechanism when calibrating this way.

@fanfeck2844
@fanfeck2844 Год назад
Doesn’t matter where you put your hand, it’ll still click with the same force applied. It’s easier to calculate if you use a foot distance, but you could do it farther up the handle, and do the math
@PlatypusPerspective
@PlatypusPerspective 3 месяца назад
@sarcasticcrypto You are right. I know it's a long time since you posted this, but it might save someone who reads the comments from causing themselves trouble. A torque wrench of this design must be calibrated and used with the force applied at the handgrip position, doing otherwise changes the torque measurement. There is a second error in that the adjustment at the neck of the wrench is for setting 100% scale value, adjusting it at a lower setting will be even more inaccurate. Anyone following the procedure given in this video will have an inaccurate torque wrench.

A proper calibration would be at 5 points from 20% to 100% that would be at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 foot pounds. The ANSI. spec for torque wrenches allows 4% of the reading. 20 foot pounds is only 13.3% of the range and at that low level a wrench can be off by 1.2 foot pounds. When tested at 20 foot pounds the wrench looked like it clicked at about 13 inches which would be 21.6 foot pounds. Most torque wrench manufacturers do not recommend using a wrench below below 20% and I certainly would not adjust one at the 20% point.
