How to Cap Square Tubing with a Pyramid Top, with Instructions and Welding Tips, for this Square Tube project.
I go through how I mark it out, and you can see the angle grinder cuts I make, then getting it ready for welding. You see the sequence of my tac welds, (Others may do this differently which is fine, we are both just after the end project, and there is always more than one way to do things).
You may want to smooth over the corners on your project if people are going to touch it or it may get hit and chipped, if the top of the post is up out of the way I think the sharper corners look better.

What a coincidence! I needed to put a carabiner through some square tubing and had to find a way to being the 2 sides closer together. I did what you did on 2 opposite sides and then pressed the other 2 sides together so that it forms a triangle on 2 sides and flat on the other 2, if that makes sense. Never done it before so it was good to see someone do something similar on the same day I was going to do it. Cheers, Gavin.

That is really well done - THANKS! Have you ever been challenged to create a good quantity of these? If so, how did you approach the task? Maybe you could help with a problem I am facing on an upcoming project that will require about 50 (yes fifty+ really) small finials fitting over 1/2 inch round stock railing pickets. No worries, so I thought, until I found the cast iron finials are simply not available in a timely manner OR are too high in cost. Perhaps I can use your clever idea with smaller square pipe (a pyramid shape is just fine), BUT ....I need to add a bit of a waist/neck feature below the "spear," and believe I must create a jig(s) to get this accomplished in a pleasing consistent way. Any suggestions? Thank you.
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 2 года назад
Well, you have quite a bit of work to make 50 of them especially with a neck set in as well. I did do a video with a bit of a neck set up on it, the link is at the bottom of this. If I am to make a few of anything I will make a template to mark it out so I don't have to measure anything much after that, if I was making what you are I would use cardboard or thin flat iron and make a square tube that would slide over the steel square tube you are making it out of. Then mark out and cut the cardboard, you will have 4 holes on the corners where the neck bits need to be cut out, and 4 triangles at the top cut out so that when you slide it over and have it level with the top of your steel tube, tape it there, and draw around it so you get good lines on your steel tube. Cut this first steel tube and bend it to make sure you are happy, before moving on to the other 49. Hope that helps a bit, I wish you the best for your project. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a9weubCUJr8.html

@BenMitro
@BenMitro 3 года назад
No maths! Bugger, I was hoping I could just pencil some algebra, solve the equations on a bit of paper and it would be done! :) I have to actually do the work? Bugger, bugger, bugger! :) Thanks Gavin - great instructions! The small details are gold - e.g. cutting past the end of the cuts, scoring the bend line, the pythagorian antics with marking the lines - and it all makes sense! Got to pull you up on using the claw hammer for the banging metal...I guess the taps were quite light. How do you think I'd go with a cheap flux wire welder? Might be a few pits in it!
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 3 года назад
Hahaha, I will find one you can use the algebra on just for you, (just joking) I have plenty of real hammers but as you say it did not take much hitting, the claw on the hammer makes a good lever and is nice and handy if I need hit one in too far or need to twist things a bit. flux wire will do the job, if you are not happy with the pits after you have ground it down, weld over them and grind again, until you are happy with it, have a play and see what you think. Remember if its a fence post, nobody really looks too close at them, and after a few coats of paint it may look good anyway. Thank you for your comment Benny.

Why don’t you just measure down 55mm and square a line all the way around🤔
@GavinClarkdiy
@GavinClarkdiy 2 года назад
If you know what sort of peak you want on your pole is and it is 55mm then you would just do it. If you have been doing it on 75mm square poles, and now your last pole for the job is the end pote and that one is 100mm square, your 55mm measurement would not give you the same angled peak as the other poles. With the working out in this video you could find the length you would need to measure down to match the peaks on both the 75mm and 100mm poles. Hope that helps a bit
