Having owned two Scotties I would completely disagree with the concept of them being a one or two person dog. Much depends on how they are socialized. If you have a bunch of yahoo kids there might be a problem as they are not patient with bad behaviour toward them. They can appear standoffish at times, but again that can depend on socialization. They are very good at determining if you are a push over, and will take advantage, not because they are devious, but because they were bred to be independent. They will decide if you don’t know what you’re doing and will do what they think they should. Scotties may appear to bond closer with one person than another, but that is related to the level of respect they have for an individual. Their best owner is one with a calm, assertive personality who can enjoy their antics and personality, but also know how to establish appropriate boundaries. Trust me, your Scotty will appreciate it.
I don't get the 1-2 person dog bit, either. My family had Scotties for the longest time -- five total in 40 or so years. As soon as any one in our family of up to eight, depending on who was visiting, sat down -- a dog was in their lap.
