Hello! Hola! Check out this video where I share with you plant care tips for the Alocasia Regal Shields house plant. I will be repotting this plant in this video because it is dropping leaves and root-bound. I will be talking about light, soil, and water for the Alocasia Regal Shields. The plant is also dropping leaves because it does not have enough room to grow. I have 3 Alocasia Houseplants in my plant collection, and I give them all the same care. Hit that thumbs-up button if you enjoyed this video. Subscribe if you want to stick around and join me on my plant mom journey! Thank you for your support
xoxo Mel

I was looking up research for my 2 new alocasia and colocasia because I always like to make sure my soil mix is right. My first alocasia did really well for me outside in our Texas heat, but I had forgotten the name. I’m glad I saw your video title because that’s it’s name : Regal Shield! It’s a great plant with a beautiful color and texture, so easy to care for. I planted in a chunky organic mix heavy with orchid bark, charcoal and coir and it grew large although it got a little dry at times. I’m using a slightly denser soil mix to hold in moisture better this time around. Thanx again for the video!

Thanks for the tips and shout out Melisa! I love alocasia. I have an amazonica or maybe polly? Mine hasn't been too difficult, it did have spider mites a few times & dropped leaves but its doing much better now. I would love to get a regal shield eventually! Or if you feel like selling a corm let me know :)

Most people don’t realise that Regal shield is a primary hybrid. I was at a big box store and both parents were more expensive than the Regal Shields. They aren’t corms, they are rhizome offshoots. I’ve never grown this hybrid myself, one of the parents is very fragrant. Could you please tell me if it has fragrant blooms please ?

Wondering how deep to plant the bulb. This I'll be the 1t time repotting and the bulb is pushing up out of soil a good 3 inches on top.

Hi Susan! Thank you so much for watching :) I personally just make sure that the tip of bulb is poking out of the substrate. I find that helps for the bulb to not rot! I hope this is helpful :)

I love Alocasia Regal Shield! It's one of my favorites. Maybe I missed it in the video, but when do you know exactly when to water it? Do you let the soil dry out a little bit or when? Or when it's mostly dry? I'm always nervous of overwatering and I get nervous when some people recommend keeping the soil "moist", I can't never seem to do that 😩 so when to know exactly when to water it? Please and thank you! 💟
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel Год назад
Hi D! Do you have a moisture metre?? I personally would water it once it hits the number 3. I find that to be the sweet spot for this plant. Let me know if this was helpful and if you have any other questions 😁💚🌿 Thank you so much for watching!
@drgatita
@drgatita Год назад
@@Melisawith1Schannel I do have a moisture meter! I think I actually used it last time I watered them, just to be sure it wasn't at least super "moist" because it makes me nervous, ha, and if I remember correctly it did say that it was in number 3, so not like critically dry 😅 but also not wet or very moist, so reading you saying that makes me feel better, ha, I also check with my finger several times to get used to how the soil feels in that "sweet spot" when it needs water in case I don't have a moisture meter or it breaks or something, ha, i'll keep doing that and I hope they thrive and grow happily, thank you so much for your response! I appreciate it! 😊

Hi im a beginner in calladium. I have both collocasia and alocasia.. based on what i have read is it true that colocassia required a lot of water while alocasia prefer between wet to dry soil condition.. can anyone clarify this for me please, thank you
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Hi Alif! Sorry I do not have any experience with Calladium so I can't compare the two. But, what I have heard from others is that Calladium are more thirsty plants. Alocasia like to stay moist but not wet. Hopefully someone else can answer your question about Calladium on here :)

Hi! What’s your soil mix measurements? I’ve got a big Regal ( my big bubba ) but not giving me bigger leaves like how I originally had in the beginning. It has just flowered already too.
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Hi Sariel! flowers do take up a lot of energy from the plant. I personally cut it off because of this. Also, bright indirect light and fertilizing the plant will definitely help with providing it more nutrients and help promote new big growth. The soil mix is 1 part soil, 1 part orchid bark, 1 part perlite, 1 part worm castings. But this can vary depending on your watering habits! Would you say you underwater or overwater your plants?
@sairelpacho7080
@sairelpacho7080 2 года назад
I think I overwater since I give it a shower most of the time. My current soil is pretty draining but it’s still in its nursery pot in a 10” or 12” pot.
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Well draining soil is good! Then, You could check to see if its root bound? Maybe it needs to be repotted. But the bright indirect light and extra feeding should help too! 😁

@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Hi @mikexlarry ! To be honest, I would say it is one of those things that is personal preference. If you feel comfortable tackling the roots, then you could, but can expect to lose some roots, also some leaves, and your plant will take a bit more time to push out new growth. I personally don't touch the roots and my plants do just fine 😊🌿 unless there is root rot, then ofcourse that needs to be cleaned up! 👌

Thanks for the info. Quick question, I have a large leaf and thick stem that bent in half towards the floor. Should I support it or just cut it off? It looks green still but I have lots of smaller and new leaves growing in too. Is it just dying off for the new ones (even though it looks healthy)? Thanks
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Hello Mogwaii! Thank you so much for watching 😁 I personally cut it off once its bent already. If it wasn't bent then you could support the leaf to help it last a bit longer. There are a few reasons why an older leaf is dying off: new growth is on it's way, root bound, underwatering, root rot, or lack of nutrients thus unable to sustain all the foliage 🌿 just depending on your plant parent habits haha it would be more concerning if leaves were dying off and no new growth was happening!

What does it mean if the leaf stem starts to bend? It almost seems like the stems are weak? :(
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Hi Sarah, recently I've heard more research on this! The leaf that starts to bend is dispersing its nutrients and energy to the rest of the plant or for the new growth. If you don't mind the esthetic look for it, it is actually best to leave the leaf attached as long as possible. Older alocasia leaves will do this. I only worry when its more than one leaf at the same time!

Why didn't you untangle the roots? Would really recommend that
@Melisawith1Schannel
@Melisawith1Schannel 2 года назад
Hi Dominik! I think this can be personal preference 😊 there's a few reason why I don't 🤷‍♀️ find that when I untangle the roots the plant could lose foliage, is not as stable, doesn't push out new growth as quickly, and can shock the plant 😁 just based on my experience
@dominikkowalik3293
@dominikkowalik3293 2 года назад
@@Melisawith1Schannel its true that when you untangle the roots it temporarily slows down the growth because the plant focuses its energy on developing a stronger root system but for me that's what I want become afterwards the plant grows much faster and have the space to develop bulbs😍
