Now that we're running a set of 37x13.50 Cooper STT Pros mounted on KMC XD231 beadlock wheels on JET Li, our brand new Jeep JL Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited, we've had a lot of people ask us how we planned on carrying a full size spare. Of course, being that the JL is so new, there really aren't a whole lot of options available or at least, not as of yet and while we were hoping to install a Mopar tailgate reinforcement kit, they were on back order and so we were forced to start looking at different solutions.
One of the biggest problem we were facing was the lack of space there is between the 33" factory spare tire and the top of the rear bumper. With a 37" tire, we would need about 2" space between the two and all we had to work with was about 3/4". Fortunately, we were able to address this problem with the help of an LoD Offroad JL Wrangler Destroyer Riser/Spacer bracket and that not only help us to raise our spare tire enough to clear the bumper, it also helped to accommodate its 13.50 width. Another problem we faced was how to extend the rubber isolators so that that they would still press firmly against the sidewall of the spare. This is critical to do as it helps mitigate jiggling of the spare as that's ultimately what causes damage to the tailgate. Fortunately, a set of hockey pucks is all we needed to take care this and in this episode of the JL JOURNAL, we'll show you how to mount a 37" spare tire on a Jeep JL Wrangler.
Click on the link below to see a list of things you will need to make this modification on your JL. Links to where you can purchase these parts have been included as well.

Probably trade my JK in 3yrs down the road once the verdict is in on the FAD(Front Axle Disconnect) and revise the windshield molding to prevent large amount of water running on your dash when opening door. Other than that looks like JL is good! I imagine you are re gearing also down the road.
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 лет назад
So far, the FAD seems to be an non-issue but then, I think more time will be needed to say for sure. As far as re-gearing goes, I don't know - so far, the new 8-speed auto seems to be pushing our 37's just fine. Unlike the JK before, I feel no need to re-gear.

Thanks for the quick feedback! I've been thinking about moving from my 2 door JK to a 4 door JL. My plans would be to go to 37's on the JL. My garage has low cross support going across at 78.5", I thought it would probably fit, but I figured I'd ask. Be safe and have fun on those Trails!
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 лет назад
I should note that to the highest point of the hard top, it measures closer to 77". I think with a soft top, the highest bow might be a bit taller.

@genuinejedi3174 6 лет назад
Thank you doing some extra checking and providing the extra information. I was thinking the same thing about the soft top that it is probably slightly higher. Sounds like it might be tight fit but should work. I might have to air down to get it in there. Ha ha.

Looks like that 3rd brake light will be viewable by 18-wheelers and lifted trucks, but probably not smaller cars. If I ever put that size tires on my JL, I'll probably try to relocate the 3rd brake light to the center of the spare.

@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
So, we did install an EVO tire carrier recently but only after about 10 months and almost 20,000 miles of hard use and without ANY damage to the tailgate. Of course, we did make sure to have the isolators pressing firmly against the spare and we ALWAYS run a stinger on the rocks. Our main reason for installing the EVO tire carrier is that we like to drive hard and fast in the desert and the spare would make noise. With the tire carrier installed, we hear nothing. If all you do is rock crawl, I think you'd be fine without it.

Does the tire bounce when you go driving over bumps? I have the Mopar reinforcement bracket with the Smittybilt bracket with a 37 on my JL and I feel the tire go up and down pretty hard when both rear tires hit a bump at the same time. This concerns me and now I’m thinking of getting a bumper tire carrier. Is that normal to feel the tire coming down hard on bumps

I've seen a JL gate door with some bend (flex) after a 37" install. Would that be due to them not putting the proper bumpstops on like you did or does it occur due to the sheer wight of the 37" spare?
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 лет назад
It is CRITICAL to install isolator extensions to help prevent jiggling of the spare. Failure to do so WILL result in damage of the tailgate. It is also CRITICAL to run some kind of hitch mounted stinger to help protect the spare from catching on ledges or obstacles on the trail. Failure to do so can result in SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE to your tailgate. This is something I have seen first hand. So long as you do both of these things, your tailgate should hold the weight of a 37 just fine. I've been doing this for several weeks now and have even spent a whole week of wheeling in Moab and without any problems.
@te897
@te897 5 лет назад
How is this holding up? I am inclined to put on my very heavy 35"(110 lbs or so)and not spend the money for a reinforcement bracket until I find a bumper and tire carrier I like.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 лет назад
When we did this back in March, we had all kinds of people swearing that we were going to destroy our tailgate in 6 months or less. A few even became belligerent about it. Over 7 months later and I can assure you that our tailgate is still holding up just fine. As I had stated back then, the key is to install isolators that will push firmly against the spacer AND to run a hitch stinger to prevent the spare from catching on ledges or obstacles as THAT is what jacks up a tailgate.
@stephenfu2045
@stephenfu2045 3 года назад
How ‘firmly’ or pushing out should the isolators be in relation to the tire? I only have the stock JLU tailgate isolators and am wondering if I should stack two vs. three pucks. Running the Mopar oversized tire carrier and their tailgate hinge reinforcement. Trying to see how much extra length I need on the 4” machine screw to securely sit in the well nut. The JL tailgate will support a 37 but it is critical that you extend the rubber isolators so that they press firmly against the sidewall. This prevents jiggling and that is ultimately what causes failure at the hinges. Of course, reinforced hinges wouldn't hurt to have.

Any issues with just using the relocation bracket vs tailgate/hinge reinforcement on the 37s?
@wayalife
@wayalife 12 дней назад
If you're running a factory rear bumper, you really need the relocation bracket to help your spare clear it. So long as the rubber isolators on the tailgate press firmly against the sidewall of the spare, you should be okay with just it. The reinforcement hinge brackets are nice to have as extra strength though.

MUDTRAIL You can think that but it wouldn't be true. Unlike the JK before, the JL tailgate is designed to hold 85 lbs. in ADDITION to the factory spare. Our 37's are only 50 lbs. heavier than stock. While it may not be the perfect solution, weight isn't a concern of mine. After driving out to Moab and spending over a week wheeling there, our tailgate is still holding up just fine.

Hmmmm...... instagram.com/p/Bft-INcnUUy/ Now this does not indicate that the hinges will fail - but there are still some weak points. I think this weak spot in the skin is what the Jeep engineers found when designing their HD carrier which still utilizes the stock hinges versus a complete replacement as in the JK HD hinge replacement kit.

Why does the mount have so much wobble that you'd have to worry about those bump stops? It doesn't inspire much confidence.
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 лет назад
LOL!! Umm, never said there was "so much wobble", just that I was trying to mitigate it from happening. You know, just like the factory isolators were designed to do from the factory.

On the rubber isolators why not just run nut/washers on inside of door

Wayalife I went with the JCR tire riser until someone comes out with tire carrier with jerrycan mounts. finally got around to running my cb cable in door. While I had it apart I forgot to do my isolators. Hockey pucks just came in, I had planned on bolting through door which is how I thought you did it prior to this video upload. Another great video

Any concern on the weight of the 37" spare without something like the Mopar tailgate reinforcement?
@wayalife
@wayalife 3 года назад
So long as you make sure to install isolators that will push firmly against the sidewall of the spare and to prevent jiggling, no, I'd have no concerns.

@dinopolic1316
@dinopolic1316 6 лет назад
@Wayalife Do you have any rattling going on back there without the reinforcement on the tailgate. I did this lets call it "mod" and the isolator now has full contact with the tire and i noticed an improvement in the movement but i still have a descent bit of rattling going on the tailgate. I keep my "trunk" compartment empty so i know it is not that. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 лет назад
The tailgate has a rubber seal that will allow for quite a bit of movement. Assuming you have a hard top, some of what you might be hearing is the shifting between the tailgate and hard top glass because of it. Another thing you will want to look at is if your tailgate has dropped a bit under the weight. You'll know if this is the case if the door hits the base of the catch as it closes. This too will cause some rattling. You can loosen the hinge bolts and compensate for this by giving the tailgate a bit of preload.
@dinopolic1316
@dinopolic1316 6 лет назад
Wayalife thank you for the reply, I did notice a bit of a sag and definitely will put some preload on it. Amazing videos so far keep up the great work.
@jeffrease3141

Can you explain "preload"? Are you talking about just an adjustment in the hinge bolts after the heavier wheels are on it?

37 probably as big as you should go for the factory door? I would think any bigger would put to much stress on it.
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 лет назад
Honestly, even a 37 is getting close to pushing it and as I said, it's far from a perfect solution. Being that the JL is so new, there just aren't a whole lot of options available at this time and we were in need of carrying a spare out to Moab. It works but no, I wouldn't carry anything larger than a 37 and really, we'll remove it once we can find a better solution.

Did you add reinforcements to the tailgate hinges or are they stock?

Nope. Unlike the JK, the JL tailgate is designed to hold 85 lbs. in ADDITION to the factory spare. Our 37's are only 50 lbs. heavier than stock.

Funny, havent seen a single video of someone getting stuck with CRAWL, but i have seed a bunch of people using it to get unstuck. Brake biasing works really well, and is used by everyone. Its a $90k luxury SUV, not a hardcore wheeler. Plus it probably fares nicer with the AWD systems ALSO in most vehicles The OP also is talking about Overlanding, and until very recently the 100/200 has been a (maybe even the) major player. Also, back to to the cutting brakes. What other vehicle has them???

Thanks for giving us your REAL LIFE experience with regards to the weight bearing capabilities. I think I also recall you mentioning that this was told to you by a Jeep engineer. I'm only putting on a spare tire bike rack with two road bikes, so about 50 lbs total, for trips a few times a year. Doesn't seem like I'll need to reinforce the tailgate for this limited time period of extra weight. Guess if I take the bikes on and off with the tailgate closed, it won't affect it at all ;)

Right, because there's no way it could ever hold up to a thousand mile trip out to Moab, spend a week wheeling hard out there and bombing across miles and miles of rough trails and then driving home again without breaking our tailgate. Wait... that's what we just did and everything is still holding up just fine. Go figure.

Jeep says that 35" tyres are the max you can run so why put 37" tyres on? also putting that much extra weight on your tailgate is not good for the hinges. Also you never put silver or chrome rims on a white car it looks shit.

Without making any modifications, I would agree with what Jeep says. I know for a fact that their tailgate is designed to hold 85 lbs. in addition to the factory spare. My 37" tire only weighs about 50 lbs. more and that's 35 lbs. less than the max weight.
