Got a Salomon hydration vest for Christmas a few years ago and love it. Has a bladder and space for gels, phone and light jacket and over trousers. Plus filling the bladder even for short runs adds a bit of extra weight to increase the effort 😂

I did Outlaw with a camelback. I was pretty much the only one who did. My reasoning was to get enough to drink without walking at every water station. Then I could use the water at the stops to throw over me. Though maybe there are better ways of staying cool...

Compression style shorts (tri shorts for example) often have pockets on the side of legs. Those work well for me. Flipbelt added if need more water.

Thanks for all the options! Personally I use a CamelBak and fill that. It fits nicely and works for me. Yes there are sloshing noises, but they are rhythmic and don't bother me anyway! I store the gels in my running shorts pockets and I'm good to go for up to 12 miles on a long run.

A good tip to get rid of sloshing on the bladder-type hydration vests: Turn the bladder upside down (so that the exit tube is on top) and suck the air out. I use both bottle and bladder vests, but prefer the bottle ones. The bladder ones are also harder to clean (esp. the straw).

Usually for runs till 10km i always wear a belt for my phone and money for breakfast after the run which to me is more important then the run itself. For longer hm to FM i love the vest which i like to carry my spare clothes...gummies...a small towel..my soft flask...phones and money. Love wear a weighted vest for runs feel good everytime. For intervals sessions i place a big bottle on one end of the park...like 1km away doing 2km repeats. But i still wear my belt...of course to carry the money for the all important breakfast. I wil never run without drinking water...why do i run? I love to drink water ...it taste great!...but usually when it taste jus ok it means u maybe hydrated already. Of course we need to test out the times to hydrate...everyones hydration needs r different .

I don't like carrying anything on a run, so on any long runs I choose a shortish loop course and leave water in the car or stashed in a bush. Take a drink stop every loop.

It would be nice to know if there is a way to lower the “water need”. I mean, is there any training/habit that can allow our body to need less water during a run?

I just switched to a vest for water bottles. Carrying by hand was giving me tendonitis in my forearm/elbow. Still needing to adjust to wearing the vest in hot weather though.

I’m a big fan of the running vest although it’s taking me a while to figure the best way to carry water in it. I’ve started using the squishy bottles in front pockets but it’s annoying when one starts to pop out 🙄

They gave away some tube shaped headgear at my last marathon. It could be a mask, a hat a headband, a neck gaiter, etc. I am slender, I could slide it up over my hips, fold it over, and voila I had a waist pack for gels.

I usually buy water or juice from shops on a long run, but now seein you use it i remember i have a hydration pack, i think i am going to use it on the weekend to do 30km long run...

I prefer shorts with a build in belt, like special marathon- or trialshorts. The seperate belt will move, twist and feel "uncomfortable" When it is part of your shorts, it won't.

#GTNcoachescorner Hi GTN. When following 20/80, and you run 3 times a week. Is the tempo run considered a part of the 20 or the 80? I feel like you have to do a tempo run every week, but then there is no space for faster speed work.

I have a lot of gear for carrying water, such as belts and camel bags, but in the end, I just run holding a bottle if I need hydration. After a kilometer or so, I don't even notice it's in my hand.

A regular size bike bottle with a large top works best for long runs and races. You can drink and dribble water on your head between water stops. You can put ice inside from aid stations. Yes, this takes getting used to the sloshing, but it really works well in hot conditions like Hawaii. I switch hands frequently.

If I'm running for around 60-90 minutes or less, then I don't bother carrying water while I run. I just hydrate beforehand. For long runs, I prefer a hydration vest.

@@danieltdp I live in a coastal desert, so it is a pretty warm climate. Also, I never said what people should do, I only said what I did myself. Everyone should ensure that they are properly hydrated when exercising.

I use a soft bottle, it doesn't slosh around and takes the shape of the palm of my hand or I stick it in between my bra or panty liner where it won't shift.

For less than an hour and a half run I don’t bring anything but for an hour and a half on up, I will bring a small bottle with a way too strong mix of electrolyte/water. Then, I will find a drinking fountain and drink a bit of the too strong mix, and some water from the fountain. Then, if I know there is a stretch where there are no fountains for a long period of time, I’ll fill the rest of the bottle with water at one of the stops before it. This has been working but I can imagine places without fountains so … it is not great for everywhere obviously.

You can get bottle sterilisation tabs which might be useful as soft flasks are hard to clean. Make sure to dry thoroughly too.

Are taps that rare in the UK? On my usual 10k out and back route (5k each way) I pass at least 7 different drinking fountains. If I run a 20k loop I pass the same 7 in the first 5k, and then at least 3 more in the last 15k. On a really long 30k loop, the last 10k has at least 4 water fountains. That's not a route especially planned for water, it's just…water fountains and taps are pretty damn common here? I've never even _thought_ about needing to plan a route for water. Carrying gels on the long runs is a different matter.

Sadly very uncommon here but that's probably because it's usually raining ;0

I almost never drink on a run. I’m not a super experienced runner but I have a hard time with it. How dehydrated can you get in an hour?
@heatherfell_oly
@heatherfell_oly 8 месяцев назад
As Mark it says it depends how much you sweat. If you are not having any issues then it sounds like you don't need to worry about carrying water. When running in the UK I will happily run for 90' - 2 hours without water unless it's hot.
