I have been wanting to make a chess set but didn't think I could create the unique pieces I'd seen. Thank you for showing me how to use those without having to have the rotary axis! And I like the way you showed how you carved it after you created the files!! Thank you!! I can't wait to use this procedure to move forward. The clamping jig is key to maintain accurate cuts.

Thanks Scott. The only thing I would update on this video Is I found it easier later to reference the center of the material instead of the corner. This helps align it from side to side.

Thank you for this explanation of four-sided carving. What takes care of the tool length starting point for each side, where the Z height is likely to be different because of the shape of the workpiece?

Hi Jason I'm intrigued by your excellent video and am trying this carving for myself. However I seem to be having problems as I can carve the sides (DK2 & DK4) and they look very similar to your instructions but when I attempt to cut DK1 & DK3 it takes away all the details from the sides and I've checked my Z settings numerous times ! I've gone through my Carveco files multiple times to see if I can identify the problem but I'm still stumped. I'd be grateful for any further tips. Thank you

I think I have solved this problem. At least using Carveco but should work for all. I’m hoping this will work as I think, I need to carve first to prove my theory.

Jason I have a question are two. how wide is your stock. do u cut it down any. also just wondering what carve times for roughing and finishing per side. thanks
@Timberfalls
@Timberfalls 9 месяцев назад
The stock was 1.55"wide and 7" tall. The wood is squared so all sides are equal. It has been a while since I have done those but if I remember correctly it was around 45min per side for roughing and finishing. About 4 hours total for each piece.

Hola!

I noticed that when you pasted down the front that the z max is taller than half of your piece. The model when rotated 90 deg is also taller than half of the material. How is that going to stay below the material surface.
@Timberfalls
@Timberfalls 2 месяца назад
Good question. It is because of the thickness of the material and how much play I had in all directions keeps it aligned on all four sides. It is also helpful that we are only holding the piece from its base because if we had material attached to the head it would not have been center. Hope this helps.
@scottsprunger92
@scottsprunger92 2 месяца назад
@@Timberfalls When I tried it the base comes out oblong along with the body of the knight
@Timberfalls
@Timberfalls 2 месяца назад
@@scottsprunger92 This usually happens to me when my material is not square and one side is not the same as the others. Once you set the first piece you are only rotating it 90 deg on the center axis 3 more times to get the other 3 sides so it should be in the same place in the design.

I assume your not changing the origin on any of the flips, accept the height during bit changes?
@Timberfalls
@Timberfalls 9 месяцев назад
Yes great question. I do not change origin except for the z height for bit changes. After this video came out I found that its easier to reference the center of the material than the corner as this can be the same on each side and is and easier way to align the different sides.
@Carpenters_Canvas
@Carpenters_Canvas 9 месяцев назад
@@Timberfalls thanks for the reply I'm working on a double sided sign for a client, the first one was off just a tad and I used the bottom left as origin, I believe that was my mistake because the board was a bit out of square, I emailed carveco in hopes of them saying "yes we are making a double sided option|" lol well see, they seem to be pretty reliable. But my next try will be , origin center, and I'm setting jigs up as well, one big thing to remember is because my sign has an ungeometrical border I had to mirror the vectors. thanks again for the great work!

You can buy a perpetual license for both Maker+ and the full version. If you compare dollars to dollars this software is a better bang for buck than any other software on the market. Maker + is equal to aspire at 800 cheaper and you could subscribe to maker for 5 years before spending what you are going to on vcarve pro. Its really a good deal. Save 5% too with code TIMBERFALLS 😀
