Just discovered this channel a couple days ago and just had to say how incredibly impressed I am with the level of detail shown! Your interview skills are just as awesome too. You never talk over your guests like a lot of people tend to do. It seems like most hosts or interviewers seem more interested in showing the audience how much they know or how smart they are. You let your guest show and talk up his craft and it’s really quite refreshing. Love the channel!

Zed, you are covering the carving world. Your carving knife videos were excellent, and I've truly enjoyed and learned. I'm a hobbyist Blacksmith and saw lots of great advice. I got myself a deep fryer for the heat treatment process and got the Parks 50 oil that is preferred by Blade Smiths .High hopes for an improved heat treatment I'm testing the 01 and 1095 steel, perhaps a few others . I'm checking this out. I definitely want to make a few spoons at one point. Thanks

Excellent presentation Chris. You provide the essential details to avoid mistakes. Wow,wish someone would make that pattern of auger now. You don't need the spur wings that cut the wood on the screw side. Old large augers in the states are often designed for softwoods, you can tell by the lead screw which has a faster pitch. Made the mistake 20+ years ago with an old rusty auger I found in a shed.
@OnedayWoodcraft

Thanks Lewis, most appreciated. Yes, that is a superb tool compared to the spurred patterns. Good tip on the lead screw, I will watch for that.

Wow that was brilliant, thank you guys for taking the time to put this together - it's really good. Just on the oak base. Another option if you want to avoid sanding machines (and there are many options) is a flat bottomed spokeshave rather than using your mora knife. As you have a vice handy you could very easily refine the shape. Dry oak can be tough going alright. Thanks again.

As someone who does 18th Century living history, I'm excited to use some of the techniques used here to make a rundlet, a small wooden container used water/rum, made out of a green branch and closed at both ends much like done here. Zed Outdoors Its very in-depth, I really enjoyed it. Chris may have mentioned and I missed it - but, is the bark left on purely for decorative purposes, or does it help prevent the wood cracking during the drying process?

So after a lot of searching, I only found augers of that type on Ebay, and it was either in good condition and expensive, or rusted to oblivion and cheap. In the end I choosed to buy large bits for my elecrtical drill. A bummer, but it works too.

Beautiful video. Honestly Zed, I think I can make natural cordage but I m not sure that one day I will be able to do this ;) haha... He is a real artist. Minute 46, I imagine what my line would look like...

Very methodical approach, I appreciate the insight into taking it to production work. I would like to see a video covering various lid making methods, it is the part I am struggling the most with that kind of container and also with dovetailed birch bark containers.
