I carved one a few years back from soap stone I did it by hand with no power tools I was so proud I soaked it in oil for about 5 min cleaned and polished when I have it to the girl she put it on it was perfect she made a fist with her hand and broke it into several pieces. I never made another one from soap stone thereafter. But until your video I never thought about a super glue coating I may try for a ring again

soapstone is soft. For agate or anything in the quartz family you need stonecutter tools

Great video! As for the finish, you can probably use polyurethane to seal the ring. I've used it myself on an acrylic ring, though I have yet to try it on stone, but I think you may come up with some good results.

I know you probably did use one (because you sound like a smart chap), but respirators are a must when eorking with soapstone even more than other stones. That dust is nasty.

You might be able to use the Dremel but have a small hole so it has more surface to dissipate the pressure.

If you're gonna do that trick with superglue you need a thin almost watery kind not a gel superglue(gel doesn't behave the way you need it for that) and you're better off using a piece of cotton cloth not a q-tip because the q-tip is highly likely to leave fibers behind....still it looks great
@lemhanback9595

There is a kit dremel put out that has a polishing compound in it. I haven't used it yet (was waiting to get the bits for my drill press). But after seeing this going to have to experiment with the various bits that came in that kit. Mineral oil and bees wax might be good polishing agents as well. Saw a guy use bees wax on a granite peace pipe. Looked pretty good. Keep experimenting.👍

The ring broke off into a million pieces due to high heat generated from the dremel. You have to spray cold water to maintain the temperature of the stone as low as possible while spinning it. That goes for any stone. Its called wet sanding.
@charleslewis558
@charleslewis558 6 месяцев назад
I'm pretty sure with soapstone, you have to heat it in coals? So it doesn't break. That's what needs to be done when making beads out of it

I don't know about sealing, but I have heard you can use cerium oxide mixed with water (to create a slurry) on a felt dremel polishing bit or a soft rag to polish crystal or stone. What if you tried a clear polyurethane varnish gloss?
@inventor121
@inventor121 2 года назад
I use cerium oxide, a drill with a mixer on it, and old soup cans to sand my 3D prints. I just chuck them in the slurry fire up the drill an voila, never been easier. It might work for stone too.

It wasn't the speed it was the uneven heating of a stone xD.... Stones are full of pours and cracks set one in a fire it shatters dangerously you must slowly heat then let it rest & cool for 15-20 minutes
