At 73 years of age I have not fished since I was in my twenties. Grew up in a family of dedicated Minnesota fisherman but I never really cared. Now I am interested! I am taking my adult Down's Syndrome daughter fishing now and we are enjoying learning something together and spending quality time together. Nat, your videos are just what I need to get restarted. Am going slowly and not running out and purchasing lots of stuff. Your instructions and information are great. Thanks again from Norm in the Black Hills of South Dakota where we have lots of fishing opportunities.

Thanks and that sounds like a great way to spend time together. Browse our Learn How to Fish playlist for all kinds of tips to get you started. I agree with the plan to keep it simple and do your research first before going out and buying tons of stuff you might not really need. Thanks for another one Nat. I started my fishing journey using a spinning reel, I just feel like it’s the best for me. I also learned how to tie a trilene knot really well because of your videos. I know I’ve commented multiple times, but I appreciate you.

I was not aware that the line has to be close to the rod. Thank you for the information.
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 3 месяца назад
It doesn't have to be, but it's easier to reach it with your finger and will allow the line to start coming off of the spool quicker for a longer cast.

Another tip, and a pet peeve of mine, is you don't switch hands. The hand on the rod always stays on the rod, and you reel with the hand you open and close the bail with. If you like to cast over your right shoulder, then the reel handle should be on the left, and vice versa.
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 3 месяца назад
Correct - you don't need to switch hands with a spinning reel. Good point to bring up.
@Fish-Erman
@Fish-Erman 3 месяца назад
@@FishingwithNat I brought it up because one time I saw a guy switching hands while on a boulder in the surf in Montauk. His plug landed in the water, and in the second that he was switching hands a fish stuck really hard, ripping his Van Stall reel and Lamiglass rod out of his hands and into the 6' of water around the rock....He swam all around looking for it, but he never got it back. Over $1000 gone!

Hey Nat, love your videos they have helped me immensely getting back into fishing. Was wondering if you could give a pointer for a setup. I have a Mitchell 7'0" medium-fast rod from last summer with new 15 pound suffix mono line that I'm using for all-round fishing and have so far caught bass and walleye. Is this a strong enough rig to handle northern pike and/or muskie? I'm fishing in a freshwater lake that drops off real quick and DEEP, but there are some fairly weedy shallow zones in the main bay, and the fish can be fairly large here. Based on your videos, it probably wouldn't be quite strong enough, and in that case do you have any recommendations for what I could do to 1. modify my current rig or 2. setup a new one that targets the bigger guys? I also need to verify the rod/reel/line compatibility of my current setup after watching this video to make sure everything is right. Thanks again for these videos!!!
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 2 месяца назад
My suggestion would be to get a second reel (or a spare spool if you're using a spinning reel) and spool that with 30lb braid, depending on how large the pike and muskies are near you. If you're after really big muskies and you're using giant lures, you'll need to move up to a heavy-action rod and 50lb braid or higher. 50lb braid would be about the same diameter as your 15lb Sufix mono. I use Sufix 832 braid on all of my braided setups. alnk.to/aWDbH6T

@FishingwithNat awesome, that'll work perfectly, especially to save money. Thanks so much! Keep up these fantastic videos! P.s. what colour braid would you suggest? Does it matter that much?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 2 месяца назад
@@Sl4yer7123 I like brown/green colors. All of my Sufix braid is the lo-vis green. Bright colors are sometimes used so you can see bites better but I tend to keep things looking as natural as possible.

Hi nat, first off love how straight foward your vids are but i was curious i saw you answering others questions so thought id see if youd help me. I got a penn battle 2 4000 reel with a 7ft star rod stellar lite to go with it and wanted a good multipurpose line to put on it cause we have alot of fresh salt and brackish fishing in my area and just want a good multipurpose fishing line with little hassle like leaders and such, i prefer mono but am open to other options main one ive been looking as is the 14lb zebco cajun mono but am just not sure, if you do get back to me i really appreciate it if not no worries
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 2 месяца назад
That reel is rated for 8/10/12lb line. I would suggest going with 10 or 12lb. Even though I prefer braided line these days, I would recommend either using leaders with the braid or sticking with 10lb mono. If you wanted to go with braid, you could bump up to 15 or 20lb braid and it would be thinner than 10lb mono and easier to cast.
@Digitalmech9364
@Digitalmech9364 2 месяца назад
@@FishingwithNat I've considered it but if nothing else do you have a brand and type of mono you'd recommend and braid?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 2 месяца назад
@@Digitalmech9364 I use Berkley Trilene XL monofilament line as a main line and Berkley Big Game mono for leaders. I like Sufix 832 braid. There are plenty of other good lines out there but I've settled on those after trying many of them, especially braided lines. Some braids are very noisy in the rod guides and don't cast very well. Here are some links to those at FishUSA. Sufix 832 alnk.to/8EJm9AE Berkley Trilene XL monofilament line alnk.to/g3bf0Pt Berkley Big Game monofilament (for leaders) alnk.to/aLIvAmJ

Hey nat, I’m new to fishing and when ever I cast, the line gets tangled. Do you have any suggestions?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 13 дней назад
Did you buy a rod and reel that already had line on it at the store? Or did someone gift you a rod they didn't want anymore? Old line that has been on a reel for a long time has lots of coils in it and may have a lot of twist. Both of those can cause frequent tangles when you cast. The solution is usually to respool the reel with fresh line and make sure that you are using an appropriate weight of line for your rod and reel. Both of those should say right on them what the appropriate line weight range is.

@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat Месяц назад
When did this happen? After a cast? A backlash is a nasty mess that is usually only an issue with a baitcasting reel. Can you describe what happened to lead to the tangle of line?
