Matt explains the differences between different algaes and how they can impact your fishing. Many anglers shy away from lakes that have blooms but those that learn to fish them can have some of their best fishing trips in the midst of poor conditions.

Just fished Clear Lake with the algae bloom and the fish were hitting the green pumpkin plastics better than black and blue. Over 100 fish days the past couple weekends.

Pretty amazing, huh? When the bloom gets truly THICK the dark colors shine but these fish are so used to our day-to-day bloom that they see through it no problem to find green pumpkin, watermelon, etc.

There's a few ponds South of you guys I fish. The shallow ones will algae bloom during summer. It's funny to watch it go from brown to stained to green to clear to stained again. All in a matter of months. Match to July.

I have a video request for you- fishing offshore structure and how to distinguish a good piece of structure. I know what points are, but a lot of terms like channel bends, creek channels, humps, etc. are sort of unfamiliar as I mostly fish from the bank but now that I have the means to get off the bank I would like to be able to understand all the offshore stuff to look for. Thanks!

your tips are absolutely right. The times I've fished in algae blooms I was actually able to get into spots where I knew bigger fish would be without spooking them n had a better chance of landing them. Great vids🖒

Came back to watch this video from years ago. Recently a clear reservoir in my area had an algae bloom, rare as it's usually a pretty high vis lake. Apparently it has a greenblue algae bloom. US Army Corp may be closing the entire lake down for swimming and boating unfortunately. Wasn't expecting this...

Hey guys, I fish in Middle Tennessee. This weekend, every pocket we ran into was packed full of bait from 1-3". Any thoughts on how to get the bass to bite? It feels like there was so much bait in the area, that even when trying to match the hatch, they wouldn't bite anything.
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 лет назад
Occasionally its tough when there is simply too much bait but generally you do your best if you can get underneath them. I find that an undespin beats out a regular swimbait head under those conditions.

Great video. My lake always seems to have algae blooms. In frustration I have thrown everything color I could think of. Red seems to work in algae stained water.

How do you fish it without reeling in clumps of algae? Or will the fish still hit it even though there's algae on the hooks? Only way to reel in without getting a bunch was weightless flukes but limits it since it just sits on top of the algae

Golden alge just it arizonas salt river lakes pretty hard. Shut 3/4 of the lakes down to fishing and moved the tournament that was supposed to happen to the last lake. Word is the lake will be closed to fishing until July.

how long do these algae blooms usually last? i just started fishing for freshwater last july 2016 always been into saltwater bass. all of my local parks and I'm from LA lake perris last weekend was bad as well.

It totally varies but a single bloom can go for weeks. In some lakes its bloom after bloom, in others it clears right up.

Hey guys, I'm trying to get into swimbaits. What do you think is a good rod for medium size swimbaits (2-6oz) and also what's a few good started swimbaits? Thanks
@DavidC-ut3kk
@DavidC-ut3kk 8 лет назад
I'm new as well but as for the reel I would recommend a Cardiff , but if you prefer low profile I would get a Lews wide spool super duty. for a good rod for that range, a Daiwa dx is good if you want to throw the 6 oz baits, but I feel like a fury 795 is more versatile for your big big topwaters, rigs, swimbaits up to 5 ounces, heck you could throw a spook on it if you wanted to or a small bluegill soft bait. some good swimbaits to start with that would cover basically what you need to use throughout the year would be a Hudd, Boot Tail Style Bait (brands such as Optimum, Osprey, Basstrix, Rago ) an Alabama rig if you want, a glide bait like an s waver, and a topwater bait like a rat or lunker punker or slammer
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 лет назад
That's actually some great advice. That Dobyns 795 is a great choice. I'd match it with a Curado 300 or Cardiff. As for baits, the 6" Tournament Talon by Osprey and the River2Sea S Waver are great places to stop!

+tacticalbassin thank God that's great news. Over 300+ strains of algae on the western side of the US. There are 130 identified strains in Clear Lake that have been around and on record for the last ten thousand years. Algae actually helps Clear Lake by minimizing sun rays at the bottom of the lake and keeping the lake's weed systems in check. Evening and nightly winds can prevent the algae from returning to the bottom for oxygen. When the oxygen starved algae dies it don't look good and it don't smell good! But it beats the hell out of Hyacinth and not even being able to get your boat in the Delta... lol

Theres carp the size of submarines that root around in the shallows at my local pond. They love it under that thick algae. You can see their fins sticking up through the alge like Jaws or Shamu. All I can do is strategically cast a bobber in an opening in the thick mat with some corn. Its awful when you real it in tho. I use a 9ft rod and kind of whip it backso it doesnt drag in the alge. Theirs a big heard of 3 footers in there. Total hogs. Borderline sea monsters.

Algae is one thing, now cotton is the devil. Do you deal with much cotton issues down in cali? For a month this year my main lake coves looked like snow. Endless amounts of cotton which makes fishing extremely difficult when it comes in on your line by the cotton ball ( literally)

TacticalBassin be aware however that if it is a blue-green algal bloom, it can produce microcystin toxins and that is a bad "bug" for both humans and aquatic life. Do not contact that water directly, don't inhale spray from your boat ride, and never get any of it in your eyes or mouth. Again, I am talking a blue-green bloom. Florida was hammered by it for 7 months in 2016. Lake Okeechobee had a major bloom for months, and water managers shunted that water to 2 saltwater fisheries, which also,turned fresh because of 2 to 3 billion gallons per day sent from the Lake. be careful with the stuff.
