Good job, that bait dock is likely a fish magnet with the bait fish that either escape/spill or dead bait thrown out .

that looked big enough to keep, why not keep it? I never saw any signs there on how big fish must be to keep

I wish I could keep haha, but California law on legal halibut is 22inches minimum, even though there are no signs they do give a hefty ticket if ur caught I believe im not exactly sure how much the fine is but I’ve heard around $1000 and it’s actually a very strict law here along with other legal size limits on other kinds

The one I caught I believe was around 17 inches way below the legs size

Do you need a fishing license to fish there?
@Fishing_Fables

Yes, I believe so unfortunately, the only place you can fish without a license would be the piers I believe but I'd make sure to call Marina del rey sportfishing that's located on the dock to double-check.

@@Fishing_Fables Man..that big boat took your spot. Yeah those seal lions will take your bait off and also if the can, eat whatever fish you hooked too. I'm a little surprised that seal waiting below doesn't just hop up there and push off the lid to snatch up the anchovies.
@Fishing_Fables
@Fishing_Fables Год назад
@@1Mannco Haha yes! I was not happy when they took over the spot!! I knew there were more down there and couldn't get back to the spot for a while since more boats were coming after too, that's one drawback of fishing on the dock for sure. Yea now I think about it, they totally are able to jump up if they really want to I guess. Another drawback is all the birds trying to get to the bait too, I caught a bird on a cast and a bird took the bait before hitting the water so they helped getting that bird off, they said this happens very frequently lol

live bait fishing in saltwater is illegal in alaska. sure would be nice tho lol
@Fishing_Fables
@Fishing_Fables Год назад
oh wow did not know that! thanks for the info, why is that? live bait fishing would be AMAZING there in Alaska, especially for those giant halibuts!!
@deandredunbar9618
@deandredunbar9618 Год назад
honestly, I don't know the reason why. of course, it's legal in freshwate, just not saltwater. all bait has to be dead and cut. no whole dead humpies, lol. although i was halibut fishing last week, and my captain said he once dropped a live humpy and caught a 50-inch ling within 45 seconds. and a popular cut bait often used is fileted salmon carcass for 100lbs plus halibut. just nothing alive. so many regulations that are just in place because they sound good. cant air bleed an illegal fish with barotrauma. gotta release it and just know it'd gunna die. also weird regulations that claim alaska halibut migrate to California so they get extra protections. yet California record is what 70 pounds and alska record is 450. so I highly doubt alaska Halibut are migrating to California for the winter.

@@deandredunbar9618 wow that is crazy, and yes agreed, I doubt they are migrating. I never knew it was regulated that much in alaska, I thought california had it bad haha. this is great info to know thanks!

@@deandredunbar9618 yea our usual saltwater fishing here starts with sabiki rig bait fishing then using those to get anything from various rock fish or halibut etc.
