How To Catch Mackerel with a Sabiki Rig: Hayabusa Sabiki Rig #fishing #mackerel #sabiki
In this video, I am fishing at a dock and I will show you how I use a sabiki rig to catch mackerel. A Sabiki rig is a rig you can buy to catch mackerel or other bait fish. It is set with six hooks on it. They are made to look like small shrimp or small fish which will bait the mackerel into biting the hooks. In the packet, there is a label that shows that one end of the rig is attached to the rod and the other end of the rig is attached to a weight.
To use it, you can cast the jig out into the ocean and slowly reel the rig in. You have to be careful that the rig does not get caught in the ocean bottom where it could get snagged on seaweed or lobster traps. Once you feel a few nibbles, wait a few seconds. Because there are six hooks, you can catch one mackerel or as many as six at a time. It is a lot of fun.
Mackerel is a great live bait fish for striped bass. I have caught a lot of large striped bass on my kayak with mackerel as bait. On this fishing day, I use my second rod to attach a circle hook to one of the mackerel to use it as live bait. I let the mackerel swim freely in the ocean while I continue to use the sabiki rig to catch more mackerel.
I use a sabiki rig on my kayak all the time to catch mackerel or pollock or other bait fish. On the kayak, I tend to just jig it below my kayak at different depths and let my kayak float around until I find some mackerel.
I caught several mackerel, including this one which I think is a small bonito mackerel.
Unfortunately, my live mackerel bait did not catch any striped bass, but at least I tried. I think it got tangled in seaweed and three crabs came and ate it. When I pulled it in to check on it, it had three crabs clinging onto it.
To put away the sabiki rig, I roll it up around its container and keep it in my fishing crate to be used for the next fishing trip.
Mackerel is a very healthy fish because it is high in omega and low in mercury. If I do not catch striped bass, I bring home the mackerel for dinner and we have a few dishes that we cook it with. You can check out some recipes on the internet from Japan or from Europe.
