Fishing from the pier at first light using Mackerel feathers and Spinners to catch Mackerel for the bait freezer. Including how to rig up with the feathers and how to fish with them. #mackerelfishing #pierfishing
Love the channel I'm new to fishing and don't get to the coast very often but your content is really informative especially for people with little experience like me keep the videos coming 👍👍👍
I can remember catchimg 140 mackerel in an hour back in 1982 of the west coast of Scotland woth my dad and grandad... memories.. Then distributed them to the pensioners in the village.
The one time I have no HATRED for my alarm clock, when it's telling me dawn is approaching and we off fishing! That's if it even gets a chance to go off, as I'm usually too pumped and wake up before it. Sea fishing, for me, the unknown and possibilities of what you might catch, is the ultimate. So, now living in Cornwall since November 2022, after a life in the Midlands, is like an absolute dream come true! Roll on spring and summer, I literally cannot wait!!!!!! 🤪
I take my coffee and breakfast with me and eat like an hour after I casted eat and drink my coffee while listening to some music on my ear pods and watching my tip After that I light up a Cohibas cigar 👍
Lovely video mate. 👍. What a great way to spend a morning, and some nice size mackerel.🐟🐟🐟👌. Full of info and advice. Thanks for sharing. 👍👏👌. Stay safe. 😷
Thank you for this video. Two days ago I caught my very first mackarel followed your guide. I had only freshwater experience before as I'm from Hungary so we don't have sea access. When I moved to Scotland five years ago I took break and just began to chase the fishes again this summer.
Cheers for the video, ive never fished the sea before only local rivers as a kid and more recently my son, who wants to fish when we go away in the summer
Another great video, Only place I been for couple years the rocks since I seen your videos always have lovely time and if you get a day tide in afternoon normally there myself
What an ace morning fishing mate !! Love watching your fishing videos. I caught my first ever mackerel last week. Looking forward to getting more than 1 per session 🤣
Glad to see there in mate we are coming up again in next few weeks so let's hope there still around as I have never caught one..great video mate keep it up
Havnt fished in over 20 years and want to get back into it, yep this vid really did help.. ill be starting around humberside area and sometimes around saltburn probably.. much to learn again but i missed it. Awesome vid dude.
Was over the moon to come across your channel Gary as all the South Shields fishing marks you have filmed are the same as the ones I fished in my youth many years ago, all look the same apart from the river spots which have changed a lot, brought up between Westoe and Horsely Hill fishing was my passion but now closer to the west coast hopefully getting back over to the east once my rehab and physio finishes, keep it up better than the telly.
@@fishingintheukgarywood I can say that - and I live and fish in Queensland. We have lots of mackerel of several varieties and some are huge. None are better eating than the Atlantic mackerel. Very fond memories of feathering for them in the west country!
Nice mate👍 Was fishing a bit further up the coast from you last night (Dysart pier) and 3 seals all within casting distance. Gave up 🤣 Will try again tonight and tomorrow morning.
they reckon the pier is closed until further notice for excessive amounts of shit being left by chava scum. i was going to head down myself but port of tyne on twitter says theyre going to start prosecuting people who hop the gate
Great video Gary! Some lovely sized Macker there. Still very scarce down here. I laughed when I saw your Lure rod! Been thinking about a new one for ages, couldn't decide what to get, Abu Tormentor was an option but very little info out there. Said sod it & bought one last week, then you appear with one! I've got the same weight rating but the 9ft. 😁😁 Not sure about the pre-made feathers - lots of folk saying the rig bodies are poor or the knots aren't good. Regards from "Britain's Ocean City"! Stay safe & well. 👍👍
Thanks trampster. I like the tormentor rod I got the 8ft because I was mainly going to use it on the kayak, i think if I get another one I will get the 9ft, it might cast a bit better. Yeah some of the mackerel feather are quite poorly made worth checking the knots etc on them. Let me know how you get on with your rod thanks stay safe mate 👍
another great vid there mate ... i do like the fight u get off the mackerel im not in to numbers at the mo but like you said "if its for bait" why not :D tight lines
I’m 16, been fishing since i was about 7 my dad got me started, recently started pier and boat fishing, normally go to a loch or a lake, yesterday I caught 42 mackerel within an hour, put em in the freezer for winter to catch some COD hopefully
SSP closed as mentioned due to litter being a health and safety issue. I went up few days ago and was shocked how bad it was, must have been best part of 6 black bags stacked against the lighthouse, and litter strewn everywhere. place stinks of urine too. Clearly some are incapable of basic respect for others. It makes a good argument for a fishing licence or permit. Btw your vids are mint Gary, keep up the great work pal.
Stu..pier was shut on sunday but climbed round the gate.....got to the end Theres more than those 6 bags now and the smell is shocking There's fishing line everwhere... as well as hooks everywhere.. More and more of the anglers are saying the pier maybe pay to fish....
Thanks Mike 👍 unfortunately there is talk that they are keeping the pier shut due to all the rubbish that has been left at the top of the pier which is a shame because its a decent mark to fish from.
Hi Gary, great content as always! Me and the my youngest will be around Shields in the next week, any tips on low water marks for spinning? We’ll be there for just 3 Days so want to make the most of all of the fishing opportunities. Thanks and keep adding the vids.
Hi Gary, thanks. Your best bet for low water spinning will probably be off the end of roker pier, its not far from shields but gets quite busy this time of year. I would of usually suggested shields pier but they have closed it because of the mess that's been left behind. You can still fish the start of the pier upto the gate over high water. You could also try the corners of little haven beach at first and last light I've had mackere from the beach there over low water at dusk from the pier side of the beach. Good luck 👍
Hi Gary really good video do you know if the mackerel are still at the 1st gate and which month do they go away just got some spinners and daylights for the two rods thanks Gary
Great video, is the first time that i saw use the Sabiki rig herein UK. In Italy is a super common fishing technique from the shore and from the boat. I have my rod for shore jigging and big popper have you experience with this techniques here in UK? Thank you.
Thanks stefano. Some people use a smaller type surface popper for sea bass fishing and pike fishing through the summer here in the UK. Ive tried surface lures like the patchinko and shallow diving lures for bass but have yet to try a popper.
Feather rod, what size of rod is this ? Do you think 130m of 51lb braid with a 6oz weight on a beach caster is strong enough for a decent cast ? I normally use a mackerel rod with a 3oz weight but you can’t give it a right good chuck or it just snaps
It just depends on what breaking strain the line on the mackerel feathers is if it's 60lb or over then braid with a 60lb mono leader on should be fine for a 6oz weight.
Damn they're nice sized mackerel. I'm still waiting for the mackerel to show here in Dublin. I'm getting decent pollack wrasse and plaice, but I need my favourite sea fish.
are mackerel still out in September? taking the little brother out fishing on a pier sometime soon, havn't fished for years and i'm fishing around Blyth area. If not which type of fishing would you recommend for this time of year?
is 15lb mono and a spinning rod good enough to catch flatties ect off the piers or eveen pollock? i want to try groundbaiting with bread and using salted fish as bait.
Hi, I'm from Whitley Bay, and enjoy summer mackerel fishing however, not being a Tynemouth Angling Club member, I can't fish from Tynemouth pier. I fancy having a go from South Shields pier for mackerel but the problem is I cannot walk very far due to a knee replacement, and having fished South Shields pier once years ago, I seem to remember it was a very long walk along the pier! It looked like you were not very far along the pier, so can you fish for mackerel at the start of the pier? Thanks very much, being a local angler, I really like your videos
Hi Kevin, I was fishing just before the gate. Not far along from the carpark. The mackerel seem to be in the bay now so no need to go all the way up the pier. Other people were catching them from straight in front of the brigade hut right at the start of the pier. I seen a shot video on Facebook of people catching the mackerel from the walkway at the mouth of the river yesterday over high water thats directly across from North shields fish Quay might be worth a look having a fish from there for the mackerel. Good luck 👍
Great vid Gary ,lovely setting ,do you have much problem with braid twisting ? I fished Whitby last week ,got a few Mackerel ,but line kept twisting and Knotting up 🤯
Hi pal .you need to soak your braid in warm water for a few hours or better still overnight. If you have put your braid straight on the spool its dry & will twist & knot whilst casting. Hope this helps .
Thanks mate 👍 I havent had a problem with the braid twisting try what Jonathan suggested if that doesn't work try using a swivel at the end of your leader and clip the lure to that, it should take the twist out of your line.
Hi Adam, it's usually about this time of year. They have been catching them off roker pier now, so it shouldn't be too long before they are in at shields pier.
Hi I have just discovered a love for fishing what is the best rod and reel u would recommend for pier fishing please fab videos love watching them you were recommended by a friend xx
Hi Charlie, thanks. It depends what type of fishing you want to do from the pier. I mainly use my beach caster for bait fishing and a spinning rod for lure fishing. My beach caster can cast upto a 6oz weight and my spinning rods are rated from 12g to 60g. I normally use a fixed spool for spinning and a multiplier for bait fishing. It all depends on your budget. A couple of good brands that you could check out online are century for rods and also daiwa for spinning rods and reels. Penn also make good multiplier reels. Hope this helps 👍
What's your preferred way to "despatch' them after years of fishing? I inherited my dad's method of clubbing their head with a hefty pair of pliers but curious if there's a better way!
can anyone recommend hardware for the 2 types of rod he is using or equivalent, e.g. rod length line, reel, lure weight in a bit more detail. is it necessary to use a shockleader for this type of fishing? I never understood the purpose of a shockleader. Why not use the thicker line for the whole reel?
Okay if I pick your brains ? I have a 10' 60-80grm 2pc spinning rod with a 4000 size reel, and will be casting a 2oz weight on feathers. What line strength would you recommend ? I plan to use Mono.
The usual rule of thumb for line is 10lb of line for every oz of weight so if you plan on using a leader you would use 20lb then you can use lighter main line to cast further but if you are planning on using mono straight through without a leader I would say use 20lb mono just to be on the safe side. Hope that makes sense.
