Ready to catch more bass this Fall? The spoon briefly regained popularity when the magnum flutter spoon was introduced but as a whole, its an overlooked tool for Fall bass fishing. Today Matt and Tim sit down together and teach us everything we need to know about fishing a spoon. Tim takes an in depth look at flutter spoons while Matt focuses his attention on jigging spoons.
The biggest misconception about flutter spoons is they need to be fished deep. We've seen great results in 2-6 feet of water around dock pilings in the Fall. Don't be fooled into believing this awesome fish catcher won't work for you! Jigging spoons on the other hand require quite a bit of depth. Most of the bites while fishing vertically come between 20 and 60 feet of water.
There are a handful of tricks that will improve your time fishing spoons. For flutter spoons, Tim recommends adding a swivel to the head of the bait as well as a stinger hook on the line above the lure. For jigging spoons Matt also recommends a swivel but instead of a stinger, he recommends a feathered treble hook for converting wary fish.
Below is a breakdown of the gear the guys discussed and used in the video. We've broken it up by category to simplify it for you.

One video I would love to see by you guys is how to fish a pond? Like local subdivision ponds. I would love your guys take on it. I personally dont need it but would help alot of people I'm sure. Northern illinois here. Love the vids!

Frank240jz I’m northern Illinois too. I tend to hook a lot of bass in ponds and smaller lakes with soft plastics and top waters. Spinners and buzz baits work good too. I use spoons for deeper water and rivers which work great, especially for Northerns.

@@anielleogiustino6297 I usually use a big jig with a big trailer, swimbaits, crankbaits, spinners and some texas rigged creature baits.. I usually go everyday if its nice. Caught 8 smallies a 4lb, 3lb and a bunch of 2.5s largies this weekend. Weathers been nice just wet

I have not said this in awhile but thanks for all you guys do. I love learning the different techniques that you two put out weekly . The way you guys break it down from baits,equipment,to technique really covers all aspects . The onky thing that would help more is to actually fish side by side with you 😆. Just apreciate all you guys do for the angkers around the country this particular one greatly appreciates all you do . I fish a really deep clear body of water and have no issue locating the schools in about usually 50 foot but seem to suspend about 25-35ft and I cant get them to eat anything . Will definatley giving these 2 options a try.

Appreciate all ur tips, tricks, and reviews. On them throwing the hook...I’ve tried is using 50-80 lbs braid rather than a split ring from lure to hook which I think takes away leverage for them throwing the hook. It works good on my bigger glide baits as well.

Great video guys, really appreciate the options during this time of year. An extra thank you for the mention of returning fish to water quickly. Yesterday I was at the State Park boat launch in Kelseyville and watched three boats taking out after yesterday’s tournament. Unfortunately, one boat was releasing from live well and dropping fish on fiberglass surface at back of boat “bouncing” into water. They left left 2 “live floaters” in the 4-5 lb range swimming on their sides trying to get deep, it was sad. Dang I would have loved to hook one of those fish, to bad they will be dead before I get a chance. Too bad the tournament officials did not bother to witness “safe release”. Since we are headed to “deeper water” this time of year, maybe a video on fish handling, fizzing and live well care would be helpful. I don’t tournament fish, but I would like the chance to catch some of the fish people kill by not handling properly. Thanks again for all the info.

I've been saying I was going to finally pick up some spoons and give this technique a try. My question is, is it worth trying to work a jigging spoon from a kayak? My transducer is mounted off the side of my yak, pretty much right in front in front of my seat so being able to see my bait on my screen seems unlikely and that I would be fishing it blind. Love the videos, will definitely be picking up a few of those flutter spoons for sure!
@treyferguson2965
@treyferguson2965 3 года назад
If your gonna be using your electronics to drop down on fish you see on your screen, then a jigging spoon would work better for you. Alot better. They don't sway back and forth like a flutter spoon. Which means the jigging spoon will stay in your transducer cone, and pretty much come up and go back down within inches of where it was. Flutter spoon will go left then right then back and forth going down, and when you pick up on it it will pretty much come straight back up, but it could end up in a spot 2 or 3 feet from where it was originally. And that could be in screen on the pump, then off screen on the fall on your kayak. I could be dead wrong but I think this may help you. Matt is a big fan of the Duh spoon I think it is. Vertical jigging spoon is what that is. Hopefully this helps a little man. If you've got it dialed in in the last year since you made this comment then let us know how it went and your system. I think we'd all like to hear your stories. Me personally i hate fishing flutter spoons. Ive had success with the smaller vertical jigging spoons, like 3 inches or less. But that's mainly due to average size of our bait on lakes I fish. We have big giant blue back herring and huge huge gizzard shad and I've got the huge giant flutter spoons yo immitate those bait fish but don't have any luck with them. I know the spool on my reel will take off wide open then all but stop, then take back off again then all but stop. You can easily tell when its going away from you, hence the taking off, then the falling back towards you kind of the all but stopping the spool. But I know there's a time and place for them, and I throw them, normally wind up catching stripers in my lake on spoons lol.
