My name is Kitty Kanhoffen, I am a teacher as well as an outdoor enthusiast. My passion for the outdoors first started when I was introduced to fishing through my husband Daniel in 2012 and it expanded quickly when I began co-hosting on Fishing with Rod. The curiosity did not kill this Kitty, but has only furthered my passion beyond fishing, which now includes foraging and hiking in British Columbia, Canada.
On this channel, you will find a collection of videos which document my adventures, discoveries, successes and mistakes. My videos include fishing, mushroom hunting and hiking. Thanks for stopping by and please subscribe! 🎣🍄🏔

Excellent vid. I’m a spinning reel junkie and pretty much collect them. I have Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Shimano, Penn, Mitchell, Shakespeare, etc but my absolute favs are Pflueger reels. Can’t speak to their other reels but their spinning reels are awesome little pieces of equipment. Their President models in particular are excellent.

very cool deal Kitty. shimano are the best. so glad you mention barbless. it may be common up there but here in southern USA seems like nobody uses barbless. i'm always having to repeat it in hopes more people go barbless. it's way better for beginners cause it's easier to remove when the hook gets lodged and causes far less fish deaths. some other things i would suggest for beginners: 5 foot rods are easier to reach the end of the rod, for beginners the line often gets wrapped around the end of the rod. the slide float maybe superior but it's too complex for beginners, stationary spring floats are easier. also braid to mono is too complex for beginners they should just use straight mono. that said you've inspired me to make my own fishing for beginners video, haven't done that yet. so stay tuned for that. unfortunately the 'rona is still bad here in TX and my girlfriend has asthma so i've been extra careful staying home haven't gone fishing all year. my alaska trip which i had booked last year also recently got canceled. the city announced no out of state visitors. wah wah wah.... hahah keep ya posted

Up here in BC I there are so many flows that require you to pinch your barbs before fishing. Even if I were allowed to use them I prefer not too just because we release 90% of our freshwater fish. There is nothing that kills me more than yanking a sticky hook out of a fishes face before trying to let it go. 😢

I catch and release because I can't see well enough to cook and clean, and here's what I've figured out: Dough bait and a bunched up worm, the trout will swallow, which makes it really difficult to get there hook out. A piece of work, just over the eye down to the curve if the hook, hook exposed, gives me the opportunity to HOOK the fish, rather than them eating it. Thanks Kitty. I'm sharing you with "Women Fishing" it if the US. LOTS of Canadians in that page to!

Thanks Syd for you support and feel free to share away! My most preferred way to fish lakes is from a boat and casting chironomids under an indicator. I find that bait fishing is best when you go their with intentions to keep, because a lot of the time they do end up swallowing the bait.

HI Kitty - for the float set-up, what stops the leader line and bait from just sitting on top of the surface of the water? I thought there should be a weight to bring the bait down under the water? Or does it depend on the leader material? I noticed you use a fluorocarbon leader. Does this material sink and pull the bait down to the desired depth? Great video - thanks!

I am glad that you found it helpful. It is very rare that I use spoons when I'm out on the lake. My go-to's are flies or bait. If I was going to toss a spoon I'd use a 6'8 fast set up at least. Then you could really whip it!

@@FishingwithRod Thanks so much! I have always struggled with slip bobbers for this very reason and I think it would make a great short tutorial. Another potential topic (maybe even a series 😁) that I would love to see on either channel would be river fishing tips like where to cast, how to mend your line, or how to tell the water depth. @KittyKanhoffen 4 года назад
We've used dozens of reels over the last number of years of fishing. Very few have compared to Shimano. I would rather recommend something that I know will work very well for years (and has good re-sale value if you decide fishing isn't for you), then recommend a 50 dollar reel that could potentially only last a dozen trips. If I were to recommend another brand it would be Cabela's branded spinning reels. I hope this helps!

I have never ever in 50 years of fishing used a leader unless behind a flasher or gang troll, what possible reason is there to not tie direct to line with lure or hook?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 года назад
The leader used in the float or bottom rig, is to separate the hook and the weight, and to have a different test strength than the main line. For lure fishing, if your main line is monofilament and you are happy with it, then you can certainly tie the lure directly to it. We prefer to use braided line and tie a section of fluorocarbon leader to it before the lure as shown in the video.
@shedmusic735
@shedmusic735 3 года назад
@@FishingwithRod Why do you choose braided vs monofilament?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 года назад
@@shedmusic735 i began using braided instead of monofilament as my main line in 2014. I like it because it is a lot thinner for the same breaking strength, which allows me to cast better. Because it does not stretch, I've also seen my hook-up rate increased significantly. Finally, it is low maintenance, I have yet to change the braided line I spooled on one reel in 2014 and I use it regularly.
