Sheepshead: Archosargus probatocephalus
Florida Regulations:
Regulations Gulf State Waters Atlantic State Waters
Size Limit 12”
Daily Bag Limit 15 per person
Gear Requirements:
§ Legal Gear: hook and line, cast net, seine, spear or gig
§ Illegal Gear: Harvest prohibited by or with the use of any multiple hook in conjunction with live or dead natural bait; Snatching prohibited
State Waters Harvest Seasons
Habitat and Fishing Tips:
Sheepshead are commonly found in brackish water river mouths, bays, estuaries and tidal creeks and especially near oyster bars, buoys, channel markers, piers and bridge piles where food is plentiful. Sheepshead feed primarily on crustaceans, mollusks, barnacles and small fish. Anglers typically use light to medium weight spinning tackle with shrimp, sand fleas or small crabs as bait. Using their specially adapted (human like) incisors and crushing molars, sheepshead can be difficult to hook and have an uncanny ability to clean a hook without you knowing anything happened. When targeting sheepshead, it is very important to keep your line tight and be ready for the bite because you often get one, and only one, chance to set the hook. The food quality of sheepshead is very good, and they are one of the only fish that can smile back at you during the picture!
Can oysters and barnacles be used as bait or chum for sheepshead?
Oysters and barnacles are very, very different when it comes to regulations.
Oysters have closed seasons, bag limits, size limits and can only be legally harvested in specific shellfish harvesting areas that are classified as "approved" or "conditionally approved" and in the "open" status. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Aquaculture manages these shellfish harvesting areas.
Barnacles on the other hand do not have size limits or specified bag limits, which means that you can harvest up to 100 pounds per person per day with a recreational saltwater fishing license and you can use them to chum sheepshead. You can also simply scrape them off bridge piles and allow them to sink and attract sheepshead. Do not scrape barnacles from private docks or other private structures without permission of the property owner.
State Record:
15 lb 2 oz, caught near Homosassa

How you Catch Mud Crabs (A Basic Guide)
Mud crabs, or scientifically known as scylla serrate, are crustaceans found in the mangroves, estuaries, and mud flats. Within their habitats, they are found, you guessed it, in the mud. Why are these crabs so highly sought after and how exactly do you find and catch them? Read on to find out.
The first step to catching these in-demand creatures is to locate them. Most of the species of mud crab that are good for eating, meaning they grow big enough and are tasty, are located in southeastern Asia, Australia, and in Africa. North American species of mud crabs (not the scylla serrate) are usually much smaller and don’t offer too much meat to eat, however, you can using them as bait for fishing red fish and sheepshead. Therefore, let’s focus on the edible ones. So where can you find them?

I use the snails i find on the seawall. Just thread a few on your hooks and cast them up against the wall. You can actually pick your fish if you can get up on the wall. Just. Lightly bounce your bait on the wall and let it sink right in front of them. They will go right after it.

Yeah right...once the limits go down ..they NEVER go up.The reason the Feds gave is...the reduced limits on offshore fish stocks( 1 now on most species) are now impacting the inshore fish duh..we want to eat FISH WE CATCH. Eventually it will catch & release on everything

very interesting video . i have been fisshing for a long time now . i lived in the mediterranean sea and currently in the balearics. we have a very similar fish that is very hard to catch and yet very satisfying. it also eats crabs and shrimps as it looks idendical to your sheepshead. however our waters are very clear and these fish have a very good eyesight and are very intuitive to danger . if a hook is too large and line too thick ,they escape and they wont return to this area for at least an hour . if they see anything moving out of the ordinary, they are horrified . i say this because i observe them carefully while snorkelling . another observation is beaches , they seem to feel safe wherever tourists go for a swim. because normally no fishermen enters the waters with dangerous stuff. so one of my solutions to this is to find a way to hide all unnatural fishing methods .i still fail . closest way is whenever i use a thin line and hide it under the sand leving the shrimp out . the hook hidden . it looks perfect . just one tiny problem . all tiny fish ruin the plan . by the time the big fish come around , the tiny ones already messed up the bait . so watching your video just made me think that using a live crab might actually solve this problems ,as the tiny fish are not interested in crabs . im very curious to try this , as i have tried for years and failed .
@FishingWithSalty
@FishingWithSalty 4 года назад
Kitos Camilleri awesome story, thank you so much for sharing! Please let me know what the outcome is, I think you nailed it that’s why I love using crabs because there is quite literally no bycatch! Tight Lines YEWW!
@kitoscamilleri7731
@kitoscamilleri7731 4 года назад
@@FishingWithSalty you are welcome , I could add more info if you like. I once used octopus legs and I hug the hook inside the meat. Octopus is tough meat , and therefore is not eaten immediately like shrimp or cheese or bread . I also like the fact that when small fish get eating crazy, the big ones (sheepshead) get close and interested. Now the only problem to this is the line . While the little fish eat the meat, the (sheepshead) freakout when they see the line . And the hunt is over because once they detect danger they won't return . I tried solving this problem by using the thinnest flourocarbon line . And managed to catch the fish but the line snaps by the time I get him out.

devin craig I agree, in fact most would agree that they look similar, especially those with an untrained eye. They look extremely similar but they are in fact different.

Do you know that mud crab grow big. They grow up to 10k. And they are the best crab meats next to king crab. Mud crab is number 2.

Yes I agree, the big ones hang by big structure... much easier than fiddlers for sure! Gloves are a good Idea especially for beginners. Thanks for watching and your support!

mattattack maybe this is not the channel for you🤷🏻‍♂️ I am learning daily on how to better my channel for people who share the same passion. My vision of fishing is being in community with other anglers who share the same passion, learn from one another about catching fish (this channel is for people who get along = it’s a community) if you want it to only be about the fish go have a conversation with one
