What a surprise while night fishing! I've never caught a snook on a feather type jig until opening night of the season. Within twenty minutes of jigging I'd hooked two big ones casting around a bridge light and landed a keeper slot snook measuring thirty three inches (33").
So, here's the story of why I was fishing with a red and white jig. The other night I went to a bridge at night to do some scouting for places to go on opening day of snook season. There were several guys on the bridge fishing. From a distance I could see that one of the men had a really large fish hooked that was thrashing around in the water below. He'd almost whipped the fish and was walking it down the bridge. Sad to say, he lost it. He told me it was a cobia, (ha, ha I laughed to myself). I didn't believe him because most fishermen would lie to protect their awesome nighttime snook fishing spot. Later I had time to chat with the man. He said they were fishing for grouper and showed me the jig he was using. It was red and white with a long red tail. I said, "I thought you were fishing for snook". He replied, "no. when I fish for snook around bridge or dock lights at night I use a jig that is blue and chartreuse colored". He then pulled out his phone and proceeded to show me image after image of huge snook he'd caught on jigs, with one keeper grouper pic in the mix.
The following day I went to Walmart to get some 50 Lb. fluorocarbon leader for the opening of snook season because I'd been broken off a few times during the week fishing at night around some bridge lights. While I was looking on the shelves, I noticed it had been stocks with a new lure type, long tail feather looking jigs. There was a red and white one starring right at me.
I bought two different colored patterns of the jig and committed to try them out sometime. Well the rest of the story of fishing around bridge lights at night with jigs is told in great detail in the video.
In this RU-vid video I actually explain exactly how I was jigging for snook when I caught the perfect slot size winner on opening night of the season. I love fishing around lights at night, doesn't matter if it's a dock or a bridge light, big and small snook can be caught around them.
Here's the method I used for catching snook around lights in this video:
1. Cast the jig way past the area where you believe the fish are looming in the dark along the shadow edge of the light
2. Reel the jig and keep jigging it as you are retrieving the lure. Do this really fast...
3. Have your drag locked down really good so that when a snook takes the jig your chances of a solid hook set are good
I'm confident that anywhere there's a light that shines in the water, especially around docks, bridges, rocks or other types of structure, my chances of catching snook are good.
