I found they work best if you dry the marshmallows out for a couple hours. When they are super fresh they tend to melt faster in the water. I also just let them float on the surface and you often get a hit as fast as flyfishing! I learned about marshmallows decades ago from some random angler, and it never fails to surprise people when you catch just as many fish with 2$ marshmallows as they do with 10$ Powerbait! Not to mention you have a ready-made tasty snack!

I remember using that technique at Lake Tahoe. We used marshmallows with salmon eggs at Cave Rock back in the 60s.

When I was a boy and Bluewater was a trout Lake. Me and my pops would use Mashmellows combined with a knight crawler. We would think that the mellow would make the worm more visible to the fish under water. It worked 💪😎👍

Nice ! I will try it in a trout pond soon. For the powerbait you have hooks with a small spring on it. Those will hold it better !

Boy this brings back memories. My grandparents would take us to the lake, you know the one with the indian name. Anyway it was half a bag of marshmallows and we were allowed to eat the bait too. So we fish till we ran outta marshmallows then my brothers and I would ride the sugar rush like little bottle rockets and sleep all the way home. My gramma had her own secret. She would put the napkin from the bacon that morning in a ziplock baggie. Then if one of us wasn't catching any she'd get her fingers greasy and bait our hooks for us. Leveled the playing field. My grandpa had no idea. Most days we'd out fish him 4 to 1. She kept her secret till long after grandpa passed. You know, the sun will be up in a couple hours. I think I'm going to make some bacon and lite the fuse on my little sugar monsters.

Grease/ oil from McDonald's French fries works great also. Rub it on your lures or put it in with your worm dirt the night before you go fishing. I've caught everything from catfish to salmon on good old McDonald's discarded French fries. If you someone who works at McDonald's ask them for the throw away fries or a little bottle of the discarding oil they dump out

Squaw Lakes in Oregon? My grandfather used to use the bacon grease trick as well and taught it to me. I've used it several times in the past, but with the advent of ready-to-use scent in easy store containers I haven't used the trick in a while. I might have to, just to relive some memories!

I am a seventy year old man I used a mini marshmallow with a red Pautzke salmon egg fishing on lake Shasta below Shasta dam back in the early 60s using a six ft. Fenwick glass rod and a Mitchell 308 spinning reel using 6lb mono line rigged it up with a sliding barrel sinker and a split shot weight 18 inches in front of the barrel sliding sinker and a size 8 eagle claw hook we called it the Shasta fly.

The fish can't digest corn & it swells up in their stomach & I think I've heard it'll eventually kill them. So if you're gonna keep fish (and hope it's legal size/in season) then use corn... If you catch & release, DON'T use corn...!!

In 1971, we called it the "Pardee Cocktail." Carolina rig, Stay-Puft mini-marshmallow goes on first, then thread on a hunk of nightcrawler. It was the original "Micetail."

Years ago some old timers taught me this method except I use a #8 hook and thread the hook through the mellow and use half a nightcrawler. I've caught trout up and down the west coast with this method. And the trick with power bait is use treble hooks, it never comes off!

Worms and marshmallows work great, especially in lakes with lots of weed beds ,even in rivers with slow current. Six to eight feet of line between your weight and hook, marshmallow first worm next , be ready.

Treble hooks? I eould guess you are not from British Columbia! Dance they are illegal in the provice, also I believe Washington state ,for rivers in bc it has to be single barb less hooks, most lakes single hooks with barbs are ok ,

Probably 10 or so years ago I used Atlas Mike's Glo Mallows, but they didn't stay in the hook very well. They did work though, caught Steelhead, Browns, Cohos and Kings on them. After awhile I realized that I could use store bought mini marshmallows and put my scents on them that I sprayed on my lures, just like you just did. Had separate containers for each scent. My buddy used to rib me alot, " Ahhh you won't catch anything with those, you'll just snag the fish as they swim by" Well low and behold, everytime I brought one in, about 3 to his 1, they were all hooked inside their mouth, not flossed, some even had been gut hooked. He didn't know what to say after that and shut up about the marshmallows for a while, LOL 😂😂😂 He was also too stubborn to try them himself. I said to him, "Oh well then, it's your loss buddy. I'll just keep out fishing you then"

Use jello strawberry flavor or koolaid, mix the two in a jar shake gently , let it harden up a little and go fishing. If going for catfish use garlic powder for scent.

Little miniature white marshmallow do work to catch trout and it'll keep your bait Fulton up above the bottom to where the trout can see your bait and it does work real good

Yep! I use a lews speed stick and speed spool baitcaster for trout. It is a medium-heavy rod, but has great action and I have caught a lot of trout on it.

Thanks for recommending those Gerber scissors. I like the blunt tip on them so a ham fisted guy like me won't drop it and spear my own foot LOL! Seriously though, the serrated edge on the gerbers keeps the line from moving around while trying to cut it. Also, I watched your how to make your own scented and colored marshmallow bait. Again another great tutorial. I always learn so much. Thanks!

One thing I would add, when tying the knot on the braid to fluorocarbon leader, it is very important to make sure you have a clean knot. You don't want to pull it tight with either line that is bunched up or kinks, basically you don't want it to look sloppy. You'll know what I mean if it happens. Because when you are using this lite of line, it is VERY easy to snap the line when pulling it all together. Tie clean, square, uniform knots and youll be just fine. And obviously, cut the tag ends off as close as possible. I always put a tiny bit of super glue on the knot as a final step. Helps hold the knot together and really protects it when going through the eyelets on the rod constantly.

Another trick is to get that scent/flavor that works and put it in with your marshmallows into a vacuum sealer jar. marshmallows love to be vacuumed and will pull all that flavor and scent in when the vacuum is released

Nice video. Some I agree with and some not so much, but no big deal. When I use power bait or marshmellows, the bait stays on for some time. I started using a #4 hook due to the fish swallowing #6 and 8 all the time. I have not missed any. I found out if I leave the line slack, I have more hits. Maybe due to more line for the bait to float.

I’ve been fishing like this for 30 years, basic Carolina rig, tie your braided line to the swivel with the sliding weight on the braid. Then tie your mono filament to the other side of the of the swivel. I use 4 lb mono and a number 8 hook, the cover the hook with a small piece of worm and a half a marshmallow on the end of the hook. The stay puff mellows work much better than bait store stuff. I usually run my leader about 18 inches and adjust from there. I’ve caught more trout like that than any other method.

I use the same rig for trout, but the trout almost always swallow the hook. Have you tried circle hooks? I'm going to try circle hooks this coming season. I use circle hooks on my tipups and they work great.

There an old timer recipe for marshmallows, Velveeta cheese, and garlic along with some flour and salt that you blend all together and make your own "powerbait" from. Pautski bait also sells the liquid they use for making their great balls of fire salmon eggs that you can soak those Mallows in that make it game on.

What's the benefit of having the fluoro and uni-knot above the swivel rather than tying the braid to the top of the swivel and having floro under it running to the hook? Maybe a longer run of invisible fluoro line but with a sliding weight and knot you have a weak point and possibility for abrasion? Just curious. Good video and nice demo on the uni-knot.

Very similar set ups to how I fish for trout except hooks. I like size 16 treble hooks amd way smaller barrel sinkers. The trout in wv if the feel the wait of heavy line or anything they will let go.

Thanks for this great explanation! Simple and precise. Would you please do a video describing how to fish from the bank on rivers with selective gear rules. I’m used to bottom fishing or bait dunking as we call it on the delta but I’m relocated to Spokane and the beautiful river that runs through town has rules attached that say no natural baits and barbless hooks only. I feel like this is favorable for fly fishermen but what about us with Spinning and Baitcaster reels fishing from the bank? What are your top three or five ways to catch fish with these rules? I have an 8’ Berkeley ultralight trout rod and a 3000 Okuma accurist pt spinning reel. I currently have it spun with 4# maxima mono but I’d be willing to try 10# braid per your suggestion. When uni to uni always wrap the braid a few extra wraps due to slippage mono or fluro won't slip as much braid always slips a few extra wraps will help if u hook as bigen , 😜

Grew up using marshmallows for trout. We would catch trout all day long. The key is to open the bag for a couple of days so they aren’t so soft. Don’t let them get to hard though or they just fall off every cast.

Fish have to be hungry for any bait to work. Worms and marshmallows do work.

This setup works. Especially stock trout. I haul those bastards in like crazy with the marshmallows

Guys, chill. If you don't know how well marshmallows work on stocked trout. You probably shouldn't even be on a body of water with a fishing rig to begin with
