In this video, we change the primary fuel filter on our MD2030 and we also replace the CAV fuel filter which acts as a water separator before the diesel gets to the main engine filter. A Perkins or Volvo filter can be used on the MD2030 as its the same engine. Check any serial numbers or markings if you have a CAV fuel/water separator but the process to change will be the same.

Useful to see before my first attempt changing the fuel filters. All worked out well apart from the smell of diesel and the engine fired up first time without even a splutter! Thanks for sharing!

Seeing you go through all this trouble I am thankful for my Vetus 3.10 with Racor filter! My manual says we are suppose to wet the rubber gaskets with clean engine oil prior to screwing the filters on. That is so the rubber does not "glue" itself to the fittings due to engine heat.

Yeah that wasn’t a fun one. I do tend to do that with oil filters, and on my engine due to its location it always has a bit of oil on it before I put the new filter on. With this I wasn’t so sure, nothing really spins on here it tightens upwards. Someone else has mentioned this so maybe I should have done that. I do on fibre or other gasket types but not so much with rubber.

Disposable diapers are good absorbers when changing oil and fuel filters. I keep a quart container of fuel to pre-fill the filters and reduce the priming effort. Also, when assembling the fuel filter I put a film of fuel on the gasket, just as I put a film of oil on the oil filter gasket.

Hi, good tips, especially the containers to pre-fill. Many thanks 👍⛵️

Oh I thought engine access was bad on our boat. I will never complain again. Happy thoughts to you!

Thanks - the filter at the back was the most difficult. We got it sorted ⛵️

Hey! I have the exact same engine, but assembled backwards since I have V-Drive gearbox (Hurth zf). For some of the maintenance work It's a lot better to have it like this, but for others is a curse! I also notice that you have an exterior expansion tank connected to the heat exchanger, but on the manual it says that it's included in the engine assembly itself. Any reason for that?

Hi, I think it’s there to just give a bit more height, the pipes to my hot water tank come up a bit and are close to the top of the heat exchanger. This just helps get rid of any air.
