How to change a Honda CBR 250R Fuel pump| @mthemekanic

So after the bike sat for the past year I went to start my bike and I got nothing but a clicking sound & no start! Replaced the battery, spark plug, oil change, air filter & still nothing! So I did some research and found out that it has to be the fuel pump. If you have a Cbr 250r & you listen closely upon turning the key. When you don’t hear a winding sound for that split second after you turn the key ( the fuel pump working) and instead hear nothing but clicking and eventually the battery dies from repeated attempts at starting the bike it maybe your fuel pump. This is what happened to me. I looked for a few videos about this on RU-vid and found a few but none I could really understand due to the videos being in a language other than English. So I decided to create one incase someone else has this problem happen to them. Hope this video helps you.

Just came across this five-month-old video today and saw you answered questions two days ago LOL that's awesome. I think I have a fuel filter issue oh, I'm going to look into trying to replace that in the next couple weeks. I got a 2012 with like 5,000 miles on it. That's an average of 555 miles a year, which is hilarious because with my commute I can do 200 miles a week. My problem is when the tank starts to get low like under three bars, the engine starts to die out if I give it heavy throttle in low gears. It doesn't seem to happen when I have a full tank which makes me think that the extra weight of all the fuel is helping to push through the system. I figure when I have the tank off I'll try to do a rinse and wash to remove any crap of the inside and I don't know if you'll pump is cheap maybe I'll change that at the same time but I have a hunch the pump is okay

Hey @aperturetech607 thanks for the reply! So from what I’m reading if I were you I’d would definitely clean the tank and change the fuel filter and pump. Check your fuel injector as well it doesn’t take much for them to clog. Honestly if you replace one thing in the fuel system i recommend replacing everything. Reason why is due to everything circulating that current fuel and having the same wear & tear mileage. So save your self time and money and just replace all 3 parts. This way your giving yourself a fresh start with new parts and even wear & tear. Check your fuel hose’s too! Over time they deteriorate and the rubber pieces chip off & float throughout the fuel system. Also If you have a full tank and everything runs ok but then you get to 3 bars and it wants to die out that seems like the pump is picking up whatever is left at the bottom of the tank which usually is rust. Fuel is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the air. So parts began to rust out inside over time. Especially in the winter when the bike sits. Once you have changed the filter, the pump & the injector I would add a good fuel stabilizer to the system to help minimize heavy rusting. And drive it from time to time in the winter to circulate that fuel. Let me know if you have any more questions or if this makes any sense to you.

Love the video brother! Hey i have a question, i have a 2012 cbr250r and when i start up the bike all my fuel bars are flashing and wont stop flahing. Is this a sign i should replace the fuel pump or the fuel sending unit? Please let me know your thoughts on what it could be, Thanks!

I forgot to mention It does have 11,600 miles on it

Thanks for the comment and information Voltedge679. I would definitely change the whole unit! Mines was doing the same thing. I changed only the pump the first time and two wires going to the pump as well. Bike worked great after that & then 4 months later the problem happened again. So the second time around I replaced the whole fuel sending unit along with the fuel injector. Since then no problems.

What’s up Jason! Great question!!! And no nothing electrical has to be reset. I actually will redo the job again because I was unable to change the fuel injector. I needed the security hex bit set in order to remove the fuel injector which at the time I didn’t have. Do you have a similar setup that your trying to fix?

@@mthemekanic Thanks for the reply, man i bought a 2012 Cbr 250 that didint run a woman had it rode it exactly 2400 miles give or take ten. She is kinda well off and really didint care about the bike anymore. I have it now and started replacing the obvious. remember this is my first CBR only had dirt bikes so off common sense i replaced air filter spark plug and fuel filter and fuel pump. gas tank had alot of rust in it. So i bought a new fuel tank and battery. old plug looked ok light brown desert color so i try and start it fuel pump primes. kemsco fuel pump. Nothing but starter. oil in it was not burned man what could be the issue i did a rolling throw in gear compression check and its getting plenty of that. its gotta be electrical or injector. What do yoiu think?

The bike does not so much as have a scratch on it.. I especially not a Honda have ever seen anything like it. a NIce honda with new parts not start. its gotta be something stupid smal im not doing. Can you go thrue the start up procedure with me buttins what controls what all i have is a haynes manual.

@@jasonrickard4484Sounds like you did everything right Jason. I would buy a spark plug tester to see if you have spark. It’s a easy tool to use to test and see if you have a good spark. If not it maybe the fuel injector. I know for mines it’s definitely the fuel injector. I should have cleaned out the rust in the tank but I didn’t so now I’m back at square one again. It only takes a small few pieces of rust to clog up the wholes. As long as you here that fuel pump prime for that short period when you 1st turn that key then you know the pump is good. I would definitely check to see if you have spark coming from the ignition wire and if so then shoot for the fuel injector. Give those two a shot before you aim for finding a electrical issue.

@@jasonrickard4484 Start up procedure make sure it’s in neutral, Kill switch to the right of the throttle is off. Turn the key to the on position, you should hear a winding sound from the pump for like 1 to 2 seconds while the needle on your dash goes from left to right back to left after the pump has primed. Then you push ignition button on the throttle and the bike should start.
