I'm 65 and an avid do it yourselfer......I figure, try it, if I mess it up, I can always call the repairman. You Tube is such a great resource, and I'd like to thank the DIY people who post, you are a God send. Thanks again...keep posting:) Ms. Martha
You go girl! Very inspiring to see a fellow woman with such a pioneering spirit. I once asked a large group of wemon how many could change a tire and was shocked at how few could. So glad my father taught me these things, even though I'm a girl. Lol thanks for passing on the knowledge.
Go Becky! My husband usually does this type of thing, but it sure doesn't hurt for anyone to know. Thanks! Seeing the grass and other plants in your yard makes me wonder what herbs you have growing there and whether you use any of them for natural health remedies?? Love all your videos.
Where I live (Sweden) all mowers must have a dead man's grip to avoid these types of accidents. If you let go of the extra handle the mower cuts of the ignition via a breaker and also applies a brake to stop it fast. Becky's looks like it has such a handle too. Anyway, it's a good safety feature. No need to worry about accidental starts! Thanks for all your great videos, Becky! :D
@@cynthiao.campbell5769 because the mower can turn on by itself when you turn the blade, start a fire and the wooden block is protect your hands from getting cut by the blade
Thanks for this informative video, Becky. Show us how to disconnect the spark plug, change the oil, and change the spark plug in upcoming videos. We need you to continue by educational videos for all to view. Thank you, Barbara
Right on! It's all about homesteading. Fixing roof leaks and putting up shelters, digging holes and all that good stuff. I never knew how to change a lawnmower blade. Thanks, honey. I hope someday to find a piece of land that I can park my 27' (or larger one, by then) Class C motorhome on. I'll get tired of moving around. There has to be a place for me on this planet, where they don't care if I'm off in the woods, living my life. BTW, I just love that little colt with the Appaloosa butt. Where did you get her?
Wow thanks for sharing this simple but effective home maintenance for us girls who think that maintenance of tools is shrouded in mystery. Very easy fix.
I noticed you pulled the bailing twine but also while the blade is off what I like to do is take a paint chipper or wide flat head screwdriver and knock some of the build up off the roof of the underbelly. Once you've had your mower for a few years, and if its a bagless, you'll notice it builds up under there.
The chance of starting the mower by slowly rotating the blade is beyond incredibly slim. Perhaps if the mower was hot from just running, AND approaching the compression stroke, AND had a bunch of carbon buildup effectively raising the compression ratio- maybe, just maybe that heat and pressure alone could cause ignition. Freak accidents do happen. I like to pull out the spark plug anyway, so if the blade is in an awkward position, you can easily rotate it to make removal easier. As a bonus, inspecting the plug can give you a vague idea of what's going on in the chamber. Enough rambling from me. Becky earned my respect a long time ago. I particularly liked the video where she dismantled an AC unit and cleaned it up. Plenty of people would be terrified of doing that.
My habit is to remove the spark plug, or plugs, if there are two or more, and put them in my pocket. If there is a battery involved, I will disconnect that, too. The fuel will be shut off. If no shut off is present, I will pad the jaws of some vice grips and crimp the fuel line. It doesn't take long to do all that.
Great tutorial!! Too bad I have a riding mower... Do you ever have your blades sharpened?? Or do you usually just replace it?? Is replacing it comparable to paying to have it sharpened?? Keep cranking out those videos girl!! You're making a difference!! ;)
You REALLY should remember to at least detach the spark plug cap. And position a block of wood or use a wrench to block the blade from moving. That will also give you the needed torque to loosen the nut.
I have 13 hens hatched July 22 ,15. They have been laying 13 or 12 eggs a day sense November. About 3 weeks ago their auto watering got turned off. They went down to 4 eggs when I found the water problem. I fixed the problem about a week ago but they have not recovered. today only 5 again. How do I get the production back up?
Yes Please make sure you disconnect plugs it's good pratice :) You don't want to cut your hands off by accident. Unless you have a handle kill switch thing it is still a good idea to disconnect. Motor will not start without spark. TFS!
hello becky. my hen had 9 eggs and 5 hatched and there were 4 eggs that werent hatch( i candeled the 4 eggs there were chicks in it.)should i wait or discard the eggs? its been 2 days
+Sharon Tabang Boy, just leave things alone. What is the hurry?? Can the poor mama have a little time, she knows what she is doing. I find it amazing how people can't just let things be.
All it takes is the piston to hit the top of the head to start, and as you can clearly see, she's rotating the blade. But don't take my word for, ask any repair shop
michaelmarage415 you must have spark to ignite the plug and just rotating the blade will not creat spark or electricity so back to my original question do you know how fast you would have to turn the blade by hand to get spark to fire the motor ?
You just made me wake up my mother. I was laughing so hard after reading your comment. She said, they are the guys that think they are to good for that and she knew one such guy.
The sad thing is this. There was one guy that did not know how to change a tire. I had to do it for him. When I got done, I just put my head down in shame. I was with my niece at the time.
I miss the old cars where every jack in every trunk was the same. Nowadays the jacks are different on almost every car. I had to change my wife's Fiat and it took me forever just to find the damn thing.
use a plastic bag over the gas opening and screw the top down so gas doesn't spill also for a woman those bolts can be tough to unscrew a block needed to keep the blade from spinning
and don't throw the old blade out cuz maybe one of your neighbors or subscribers will offer to make you a knife for the fact it is a prime metal specially if it's and old one i.e. made in the U.S rather than China
This is a good repair, but I don't care for the title. It's not a guide for girls, it's just a guide. By including that modifier in the title, you're enforcing the gender-normative assumption that this type of work is men's work and that women who do this are the exception. Anyone can mow a lawn; this guide should apply to anyone.
Is it really that impossible for a female to be able to wrench on her own ride? I've got videos all up and down my channel of me operating or wrenching on everything I own with no assistance from anyone. You guys act like turning a wrench to loosen or tighten a bolt is some sort of rocket science, when it's really the same brain-dead equivalent as changing a freaking light bulb...~smh~
If the gas tank is empty (as she already pointed out) and the break is activated, then there is absolutely 0% chance of the spark plug igniting even if she turns the blades.
I have to agree with others posting here to always remove the spark plug before removing the blade. You did a great job Becky. Remember too that you can always sharpen the old blade to have it for a spare. Thanks for the video.
Good repair. I'm a huge fan of doing it yourself and saving some money. Money is life. Some may argue but you have to burn hours of your life every week day in order to earn money, so if you can save half a day's wages rather than spending it, you're saving 4 hours of your life. And if you plan well you can set your life up so you don't have to work at all, then you're saving your entire life.
Don't work at all? In the country? You must be joking! Country is a busy place the only difference is that you can do when it suit you and also since it is our true and happy choice, it doesn't seem to be a chore.
CC's World AUSTRALIA Woa, you live in Australia? That country has become a nation of disarmed people living under a totalitarian anti-male feminist dystopian government. I'd start making plans to expatriate if I were you. A lot of Australians have found better lives in Cambodia. I'm thinking about moving there in a couple years myself.
I love my Australia, hubby and i thinking to retire to the country and live self sufficient life. I migrated from a narc country that only looked after the top dog and this is the country we love. So far the only woman we have had was Julia , we can have arms provided they are registered, i don't need arm and hope never to need any. If i was to move, hubby and i like Vanuatu, very close to home. take care
Thanks for sharing this great video! Makes me think "I can do that!" Yes, you're right--anything you can do for yourself without depending on the labor of others--ends up saving you money. This was a real girl-enpowering video. Like to see more in this vein!
SAFETY ALERT! Disconnect the spark plug before you tip the mower over to prevent the unlikely event that the engine starts, turns the blade and lops off your delicate little fingers ruining your manicure for the rest of your life plus it could save you an expensive trip to the E.R. You're never so busy that you can't be safe. Tfs
