Just want to say a huge thank you to you for this extremely clear video ! My mum is a pensioner and for something so simple to do would have costed her over $100 if I call an electrician. I can now do it for her following your video without costing a ridiculous amount of money as with rising cost of living, every dollar counts !
Onya mate thanks for the great video in Aus. Nice for every homeowner to know how to do it and not call a sparky for every little thing when it can be done safely and isolated
This is from the Fiji Islands. Thank You very much😊😊 for your clear instructions👍. We have managed to replace an old one with a new one today Sunday 16/7/2023.
Yeah I was going to say!, I’m no expert and technically I shouldn’t be touching the wires at all but I have swapped plenty of outlets and light fixtures renovating houses with my dad in Melbourne and I like to turn all the meter box switches off just to be safe. Getting electrocuted once is enough for me
Thanks for the video! I'm in NZ. Question. I want to remove a heated towel rail that is hardwired to the power socket... I bought a face place for the socket as I don't want power there, can I just clip the cable? I would get a sparky but it seems like something I should be able to do :-D Thanks
Thanks for the video it’s very clear and helpful. I have a question: Would the same method be used for replacing a telephone outlet with a power outlet?
I have the same kind of power point but one of the switches keeps shorting/zapping whenever i switch it on or off (doesn't affect anything else). I'm worried i'll electrocute myself so should i just change over the whole outlet like you've shown or could there be something else wrong? Thanks!
It got a bit hairy at the end when you withdraw the probe from neutral ànd left the other probe in active while the gpo was on and active. But nice, clear instructions. Good job!
Thanks for the awesome vid mate, so clear and easy 👍🏻Just wondering, I bought a new switch/faceplate and it says 10A rating, there’s another one identical that says 15A rating. What’s the difference ? Cheers
Earth cable should have a little extra slack in it - it needs to be the last thing that comes out if the socket were to be ripped out of the wall for whatever reason, earthquake etc.
I've just moved into a new apartment (built around 10 years ago) and a lot of the powerpoint switches are frozen in either the on or off location - is this likely to just be old age (so i could replace them like in the video) or could there be an underlying issue?
Yep i would say just grab a qualified sparky to whip around and replace them. Shouldn't take long and wouldnt be that expensive to do it properly. Sometimes its not as easy as whats seen in this video.
Sorry if i sound dumb but i just wanted to clarify if there were 2 sets of red and black wires would i just twist the red on red and black on black then secure them to the allocated terminal on the outlet? TIA
@@allelectricalau Thanks for the quick reply, your video saved me I'm in kind of a bind at the moment I recently moved place with only 1 outlet in the kitchen and the whole face plate crumbled into dust from how old it was but luckily the wires were still in tact
You will have to join it in the wall with a propper solder connection and jbox. Or connectors and blank plate so you can access join if a fault occurs.
What if you dont have that testing machine at the beginning of your vidieo, can i just turn off every swith in the meterbox, will that isolate the power or will there still be power there
@Clan Cambo I've just been ysijg microwave/airfryer/ food dehydrator/ rice cooker, but I leave the microwave abd airfryer always turned on, the rice cooled and dehydrator on get switched on when required
No, dont do this! Usually a 15A socket will have its own dedicated circuit back to the switchboard. Please contact a licenced electrician and they can help you in installing a new circuit so everything is safe.
That's really annoying. Should only be a maximum of 3 cables at one point. Might need to use a junction box and run a single cable out to the power point.
Hey mate, I'm currently running wires to my container about 30m from house. I was just going to do it off a plug to go into an existing outdoor power point, though I'm tempted to drill into the side to try piggy back off the outdoor outlet so I can just put in a light switch in the container or a seperate switch next to the other, would this work? Lol cheers in advance mate
Answer to my own question. Caravans where you want to turn off both the active and neutral wire when you turn the power point off for extra safety as there isn't an earth.
Sometime a dodgy extension lead could be hooked up to a portable vehicle such as a caravan. Having double pole switches and corcuit breakers insure safety and earth parts from becoming live.
Just moved into a rental that has singles all over the place, glad I'm able to do a simple fix for about $6 a point rather than have an electrician come spend half an hour for a couple hundred dollars
AGREED PLEASE USE A LICENCED ELECTRICIAN AND DO NOT ATTEMPT ANY OF YOUR OWN ELECTRICAL WORK. ALL SITUATIONS CAN BE DIFFERENT AND NOT ALL JOBS ARE THE SAME. PLEASE READ MY DISCLAIMER!! APPRENTICES AND ELECTRICIANS CARRY ON LEGENDS 👍
If the cause of the fire was the result of the work that you did and it can be proven that you did not use a qualified electrician. If your house burns down because you left your electric blanket on all day, the power point you replaced in another room won't be a concern to your insurance company.
Do I need that voltage reader? Is it essential? I don't have much money is why i'm asking. I know the sockets that are faulty in my house I just need to change them.
