Replacing the accessory belt and the commonly failing idler and automatic tensioner on a Duratec HE. This car is a Mondeo Mk3 but the engine and pulley layout is similar or identical in other cars that use the same engine, including the Focus and some Mazdas and Volvos.

You have helped me, thanks again. I was replacing the Air Conditioning Compressor (pump) and the Condenser (radiator) and wasn't sure whether to also change the Drive Belt at the same time because it looked Okay... but it was the original that had done 70,000 miles and was 14 years old. Your video taught me that it wasn't ok and reminded me that it did slip/squeal a little in the winter and especially when going through car washes. So I bought a new one and when chaging it, like you demonstrated, also checked all of the pulleys... Just the one luckily, the Tensioner one, so off out again to get a new pulley, just like you! :-) Awesome! P.s. Mine is a MK4, 2008 2.0 16V Petrol and almost identical (belt and pulley wise).

As usual, a very interesting tutorial on mondeo mk3, keep posting. I had exactly the same issue when refitting the new belt.

Did mine few days ago. Could not use a torque wrench, bar etc for tensioner due to brake line in the way. I used a 15mm spanner to take off tension whilst removed belt. My advice, leave the water pump pully to last as damn much easier to get too with belt. Use a 10mm Swan neck spanner to undo idler pulley from above, again easier access. Last part, whilst you hold down tensioner to get belt on, have someone from above slide the belt over water pump pulley and done. No more rattles and clunk's. Simple job, 45 mins

Thanks for the video - again !! Funny enough I have my tensioner pulley and idler pulley waiting in my shed to be replaced whenever I got time. I did the belt first last summer and then noticed very slight play on them bearings. Belt was originall too - 12 years and 115kkm, also didn't show wear. And one more thing - I can see that your tensioner pulley is Made in Poland - hope this will last you good - greettings from Poland @Craig !

Great video Craig, thanks. Cable tying the breaker bar to something while it's wedged to release the tension seems a sensible idea, otherwise there is a risk that if the bar slips it will be catapulted into your shin or somewhere similarly painful! Your videos have given me confidence working on my Mondeos. I even had the intake manifold off and replaced the swirl flaps on my first Mondeo thanks to your video. Cheers!
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 5 лет назад
It wouldn't slip, it happens to sit in a little hollow in there quite nicely, but the risk isn't the bar being flung somewhere, it's rather getting your fingers caught if the belt suddenly comes under tension!

 @Craig's DIY Car Good point. So I actually did this job today. I reviewed the video to check what was involved and fitted a genuine Ford V belt. It WAS hard to get the new belt on. I had to pull the tensioner to its most retracted position, slightly slip the belt off the water pump pulley and get the belt onto the tensioner pulley, then it was possible to push the belt fully onto the water pump pulley. Hope this helps anyone else struggling with this job. The new belt was shorter than the old belt by about 2cm!

Thanks Craig, didn't know that previously about standardised sizing or ribbed belts, my car's getting to an age where parts are becoming harder to source, so this'll be properly useful. Also was keen to know how the Idler Tensioner works, as its easy to make a simple job very difficult without a little 'knowledge'. My newer car is a Peugeot HDi, so same 'family' of engines

I couldn't find a tentioner pulley like you had. Ended up buying the entire tentioner off ebay for £20. I couldn't get the bearing to budge so ended up breaking that plastic pulley. The idle pulley bearing came out fine and replacment bearing was only £5. Waiting on locktight, tentioner and a belt to get delivered. Then put all back together. 140 000 miles on my old girl lol.

As commented, it is better to change the whole assembly and belt at the same time, it'll save a lot of dicking about. Also, the tool for "de-tensioning" the belt, is available from Machine Mart for about 16 quid... It's a Laser Tool, item number 5208. I've just bought one and it makes the job a shed load easier. I'm on my 4th Mondy Mk3 so I'm kinda getting the hang of these cars 😏

Best to replace everything at once including the crank pulley... that`s what i`m doing in the coming week also worth checking the aircon pump. Fortunately, I have a low mileage spare from another engine and possibly may only need to change the clutch assembley. If the whole pump needs replacing, the guy doing the work has the tools to disharge and recharge the system when done.

Very true... I had to enlist the help of a passer Byer to assist in getting the belt on to the last pulley.. in this case.. I was underneath holding the tensioner back looking up to the power steering pump pulley has followers using a small screwdriver to shoehorn onto the pulley. I saw he could not overcome the tight fit but was able to get it in the position where I could just roll the engine a few degrees and it would fetch up. It was funny.. 6:30 in the morning thinking to myself I could use anybody to help me with this..lol.. some wild man with red hair to beard and tattoos and was half-drunk come walking by.without moving a muscle in my body that tends to last him with the possibility of a beer in the few dollars in his pocket. Crazy as hell but it was a good guy.. and I treated him appropriately. I change the alternator the tensioner The idler pulley and the serpentine belt. The new tensioner was just a little different configuration. The original one had a location where I can put a wrench on it other than using the bolt in the center of the pulley. There was duality..because of this location to put my wrench besides the center bolt as I release the tensioner my rent wanted to travel into the crankshaft position sensor which may be different on the European version. In any case thank you sir you are the man 👊

Hi, Thanks for the video! I lost the plastic access panel (the one that you removed in the beginning) from my mondeo. Do you have any idea what might be the OEM number of that part as I would have to get replacement and Im strugling finding the right part. Thanks for your help! My mondeo is mk3 2.0 TDCI.

@@zachaphina3140 No the tensioner was right at the bottom, accessed via the wheel well. It is a 2.0 duratec.

I've watched many great vids of yours that have helped me so much. HUGH THANK YOU. Have you had any issues with 1st and reverse gear selection? I've changed the box oil but made no difference. Gonna replace the gearbox mount hoping it may be misaligned. Hoping its not the box itself that's screwed. Can often only 1st by going from 2nd first.
@CraigsDIY
@CraigsDIY 4 года назад
Is that a manual or auto? Sounds like a gearbox problem either way. I can't see how it's the mount honestly.
@mathewwebb522
@mathewwebb522 4 года назад
Its a manual 5 speed petrol estate. Mount was just something I read online saying the linkage was misaligned due to bad mount. Yeah not convinced that's it either. Was really hoping the new gearbox oil would have helped.
