In this video, I’m talking about the topic of switching careers and how to change careers, especially if you’ve been in one particular industry or position for a very long time. The age-old question, “What’s the best way to switch careers when you’ve worked in one particular field or industry for several years?” I’ll be giving you career change advice so you can have a new career and make the career change you’ve always dreamed of.
Specifically, I give you 4 tips that will help you to change careers.
1. Leverage what you have to change your ENVIRONMENT.
2. If the ideal role you want isn’t possible for you right now, find an “in-between.”
3. Match your resume to the roles you apply for.
4. Envision yourself in the role you’d love to do.

What if you don't know your ultimate goal, but are unhappy in your current position?
@fatimasamira3695

Me too. But, maybe, that's a good thing. I mean, we can apply to any job other than the kind of job we are in right now. If you look at it this way. You are open to many possibilities. However, I want to say something that I now believe is important. Don't go after a job. Go after "the job". I mean the job must give you financial confidence not just financial security or financial freedom. I mean you must feel confident when it comes to financial decisions. The job must give much more than just money and title. It must give you the opportunity to explore your personality further, your hidden talents that even you were aware of. It must help you boost your self-esteem. You must feel more and more human not robot in human body. Thank you for reading

Take a personality test like Myers-Briggs. Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Do you like to dress up in business attire, or are you more casual? Do you like working alone, or on a team? Can you focus and concentrate for long periods of time, or do you need constant stimulation? Envision yourself in different roles. The better you know yourself and your preferences, the more likely you are to pick the right goal.
@DrJonTam

It takes time to figure that out. One thing you could do is try other jobs and see if you like them. Or you can start a side hustle (real easy on fiverr or upwork) and see if it gains traction or if it’s something you like. It’s something I talk about a lot in my own videos.

what if you have no idea at all? I took the personality tests. etc. I am an online ESL teacher. I taught english overseas, was a former special ed teacher. I am drained. I did freelance work in between like content writing, photography, virtual assistant as a podcast manager and editor. I am in transition and unsure on if I want to start a business teaching yoga and coaching (which is my passion) or do marketing, learn new skills. I am unsure if I want to monetize my passions or have a steady job and do my passions for fun or a side thing.

I recently went back to school and earned a certificate in paralegal studies. I'm finding it harder than I thought to het hired as a paralegal because I have no legal work experience. My work experience is in banking operations. What I learned from this video is to take a different route to entering the legal field and one way I can do that is to apply for jobs that combine operations with law. I recently came across some jobs such as legal operations specialist which I'm going to apply for.
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam 4 года назад
Jason Mims just a word of advice that the legal industry is going to be heavily disrupted with AI and automation in the near future. We’ve already seen robots be able to sift through records in 1 hour that would take a paralegal 1 week. While moving to another industry may be an out, one thing I would suggest is to build a broader skill set rather than a narrow skill set that cannot be replaced by automation. Best of luck bro.

I know I'm not Linda, but these things helped me in the past, sharing is caring: - try to get the 'Business Model You' book, it works like the business canvas but applied on the personal level; - once you have more or less a list of what you'd like to do, try eliminating them, really think them through and see if you'd actually be happy and productive by doing it everyday; - once you've left with a few of them, take action, take online courses, see videos, read blogs, speak to people who are doing it already; - also, give yourself time and space for this. It's process and the answers might not come in a week's time.

Thank you for all your information and knowledge. My question is ...I'm a firefighter and would like to switch to a career that is less dangerous and that doesn't consume my life on and off shift. As you said, I do cater my resume to the job description. But putting down "Firefighter/EMT" as my previous position, even though I have all the right skills and knowledge they are asking for, seems to intimidate the interviewer. In some applications, I have removed my firefighter position off my resume hoping to get an interview, and still nothing. I'm lost and very frustrated looking for work for the past year with no positive leads. Can you help? Thank you for your time.
@SuperChargeYourself
@SuperChargeYourself 5 лет назад
Pascal honestly I think it’s so cool that you have been a firefighter! Shows hat you’re calm under duress and can handle crises very well. If I were you, I wouldn’t hide it. I’d highlight all the skills I have today that are relevant to the job at hand. Good luck.
@MentorShelly
@MentorShelly 4 года назад
I agree...I wouldn't hide it either. You have useful transferable skills as a firefighter you can use in other career paths.
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam 4 года назад
I don’t think you should remove it. Instead, I’ll work on crafting a career change story that you can tell with conviction. Also, highlight the transferable soft skills you’ve built in firefighting (eg nerves of steel, problem solving, discipline, fitness) and how those would transfer well into your new career. Build some skills via a side hustle and start networking into the career you want to switch to learn more about what that industry is looking for. I talk about this in my videos about career change mindset and career transition so I hope that helps.

Hi Linda, I've been watching your videos ever since I resigned from my previous job a month ago. I am currently looking for a job which is in line with my degree, which btw, I don't have enough experience. If I may ask, would you recommend sending resumes to all the companies on that field that you wanted even if you are not sure if they have job openings?
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam 4 года назад
its K Dreams you gotta think of it as backward design. One thing I recommend to people is to identify the target, then conduct a SWOT analysis, and then tailor your candidacy from there in your cover letter, resume, and interviews. @DrJonTam

Asami ART أسامي آرت that’s not necessarily true. Employers hire on personality, skill, and experience (in that order). You need to plan the transition carefully so you have the basic skill for the employer to even consider gambling on you. One way to do it is to sell your soft skill set and network properly, which I talk about a lot in my own videos.
@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 6 лет назад
I disagree with your analysis that you cant make a major career change without doing it in incremental steps. I know lots of people personally who hated their current career path and just made a "cold turkey" career change with little to no problem. If youre transferring into an industry that is in high demand and there is a shortage of current qualified individuals to fill those jobs, employers will be willing to look "outside the box" and hire you. You might have to get certain new qualifications to help meet those new job requirements but I would never give up 3 to 5 years of my life slowly moving closer to your dream job. Its 2017, go after the job you want, do not take positions prior just to satisfy a desire employer.
@LindaRaynier

Kenneth White thanks for sharing. Like I said, if there is no direct route to the new job you want, then find in-between roles that will get you there. So if there is a direct route, by all means.
@nenadmitkovski

It doesn't have to be either or, both ways can work depending on the person. To take this risk, you have to have a great foundation to stand on otherwise you might make a mistake because you don't understand your aim, goal, your purpose. Some people know this by natural instinct but I've seen many many people confused about what they want to do in life. And for that kind of person, gradual steps is a better way forward.
@DrJonTam
@DrJonTam 4 года назад
Kenneth yes, market supply and demand is a big factory. However, everyone’s degree of pain, financial runway, and network are other major variables you gotta account for.

Liza Parisaca unfortunately, there are lots of certification barriers around certain trades because there are associations actively protecting them to avoid malpractice and promote the integrity of the profession. So if you want to make a career change into a regulated field like teaching in public schools, becoming a CPA, or being a lawyer, there are degree and certification requirements. Every one of them is different so you gotta do your research on the state/provincial requirements.
