Pulling the fill plug first is something I hadn't thought of and is a great tip!
@canadaoffroad1669

Worse case if you find yourself in that situation you can pull the shifter out of the top and fill it that way but hard to tell if you have the right amount in it. Get you by in a pinch tho

GL 4 80w90 is the manufacturer recommended lubricant
@BobVan
@BobVan 2 года назад
Supposedly GL-5 isn’t good for the synchromesh SM465. It has stuff that causes premature damage to yellow metals inside. The 80W-90 equivalent GL-4 or tranny (gear oil) thats designed for Synchro mesh gears is preferred. Valvoline Synchromesh MTF from Oreillys is what they recommend in my area. It’s what I’m using as well. Thanks for sharing!

If its GL-5 with the MT-1 designator its safe to use with the brass synchros
@BobVan
@BobVan 4 месяца назад
@@coolguy2475 Yeah I did a little research and I also looked on Novak site and they said the same thing but almost all sources I looked into back then when I changed my oil recommended the stuff I mentioned above over the GL-5 because “API GL5 gear oil has higher levels of active sulfur phosphorous, which will corrode yellow metals” quoted from another site I seen it on. But It may only be an issue if you get the SM465 above normal operating temp. Probably fine with the 80W and or GL-5 (with the MT1 designator) but I wasn’t taking any chances.

This was a major help. Can't say enough for how much, since buying my '68 GMC C15 almost ten years ago. I've put a re-man straight-six, 250 CID in six months ago, but never thought about the transmission until it started sounding odd. Now I know why. 'Just hope I caught the problem in time. Thanks again.

This really helped me I just INHERITED this 1987 GMC S15 SIERRA TRUCK AND My inlaws drove this truck to and from California-Mexico 🇲🇽 and have never replaced the oil because they did know how. I have a feeling I'm in for some transmission issues although it runs good. Thank you for this great video.

Thanks for the advice and tutorial. I was having huge issues with my 85 GMC 4 speed transmission and what I thought was going to cost me well over two K, turned out to be zero fluid in the clutch master cylinder and very low transmission fluid.. Twenty three dollars and a few questions along with this video saved me an enormous amount of money. Thank you so much for putting this content out.

Did yours make a loud squealing noise without any fluid in it
@Socoolral
@Socoolral 3 года назад
@@mickeyalston2239 It made some noise but for the most part it would make grinding when trying to put it I. Gear and it was nearly impossible to get it in gear. It would make a big clunk noise when Putting it in reverse (the only gear that seemed to work) but now it runs like new after filling up the master cylinder and manual pumping fluid into the transmission. It was surprisingly easy.

Thank You, MG, For a Fairly Obvious(No Offense/Desrespect meant) Visual With More Helpfull Details For easiness Of the Job. Yes VERY GOOD Point Make Sure The Fill Plug Is Loosenable, Assumable That It Would be But Rust Does Its Nasty Thing Especially On a Threaded Above a Lubricant level That gets Dry. Thanx For the Magnet Tip I Didn't Know It was there. Yes Tranmsission Fluid The Forgot about maintenance Detail. I Love Those 465's even Though Few do

Thanks for the video! What’s the thought behind using such a heavy duty gear oil into the gear box? I just run dexron VI. Is there no concern that it won’t be able to cycle through properly? I use the same stuff for rear end dope on my 83 K10

@wearemannamachine
@wearemannamachine Год назад
My understanding is that you should use GL-4 oil instead of GL-5 because the GL-5 oil is corrosive to brass and most/all SM465's have brass bushings in them

Just started to watch this video. Currently walking home. I have a 76’ C10 with a 3 speed Saginaw. Does this work for all applications or just with the 4 speed in this 77’ ? I am about to install this 465 in the near future but for a couple weeks I’m gonna run the 3 speed because I know it works but I’ve drained it and pulled the driveshaft thus far. Thanks in advance!

Or just put a gallon in and call it done. If you're slightly over or under it won't matter either way, and no SM465 should really be appreciably different than 1 gallon. It also gives an opportunity to inspect your shifter, which is probably loose and needing a modification and/or new O-rings to firm up anyway.

you will have to drop the transmission, most likely a bearing failure
