After new roll pins and shifter is in installed, to retain the roll pins use a stainless steel hose clamp over the top of the shift tower you will never see the hose clamp under the stock shifter boot.

Well I do love glass packs as well I had them on my 6.0. at first I just love them and after a while it got old because that constant loud rumble in the truck just got to be overbearing you couldn't have a conversation with a buddy in the passenger seat without yelling all day

Secure the roll pin in the hole and then use a small punch and hammer to peen around the pin hole to shrink the hole until the roll pin is securely retained. Done this trick with bearing races and roll pins over the years.

If pins are loose or missing tap them with a 3/8-16 tap then use a 1 1/2" 3/8 bolt and jam nut. Run the bolt in till is puts a little pressure on the ball then tighten jam nut use locktite of course.

Hah! I knew I wasn't hallucinating! There IS supposed to be a little plastic bit in there! Problem is I can't even find a GM part number for it. And welding the shifter into one piece resulted in the truck no longer going into ANY gear and me having to scour the junkyard for another shifter, which is *Also* missing the little plastic piece :‐| I guess just a tiny bit of give is crucial to soak up differences in manufacturing tolerance or something.. So I guess now I have to start using pieces of plastic trash until I find something that works. Maybe a scrap of PEX plumbing. Or the cap from a Coleman propane bottle
@SquarebodyStuff
@SquarebodyStuff Год назад
I've welded several of these and never had an issue.

Could you shorten the length of the shift lever to tighten it up some? Make the throw shorter?
@SquarebodyStuff
@SquarebodyStuff 3 года назад
That would work, but the you have to physically reach for it.
@dand3975
@dand3975 2 года назад
No back when people lifted trucks with body lift blocks the shifter would be 3" deeper in the floor, it did not feel right reaching down for the shifter. If the notch in the bottom of the shifter that rides on the roll pins is to worn out, it is best to source another complete shifter. That old 465 and 205 gear drive transfer case was some good stuff.

Nice video. I have 83 gmc jimmy 4 speed 4x4 gm465452 I lost low & 1st gear but can get 2nd, 3rd & reverse. My bro said it might be the shifter. What do you think. It started with not catching 1st gear but would catch low gear so I would drive in low then shift to 2nd then 3rd while driving. I only have 3rd gear & reverse now. Talk to me BRO.

My apologies if there's already a video on this, but have you ever had a lose 3rd (or 2nd if you count L. 1. 2. 3)? Mine will fall out of place if I don't hold it up. First time it happened, was full-throttle on an onramp, pitched the truck sideways and nearly crashed.

@SquarebodyStuff

@thenexthobby
@thenexthobby 3 года назад
Supposedly the end piece takes 2 O-rings. If you drive out the pin and remove the end piece you'll see where they go. But with O-rings and/or plastic bushings taking a beating from the leverage of such a long shift lever I'd wager that this welding technique will produce better results, even if it makes the shifter feel a little "rougher" .... however since you're not going to eliminate all the slop regardless, that's not a concern. I'd be more concerned with where missing O-rings and plastic bushings wind up!
@NFAshooter
@NFAshooter 2 года назад
 The ones I've seen (that are still sort of intact) are white plastic rings that have a square cross section that fit in the grooves you see in the end piece. A piece of 0.020" metal wrapped around the end piece tightens it up well too, for those that don't have a welder. You can add 7/16" o-rings to tighten it up even more.
@SquarebodyStuff
@SquarebodyStuff 2 года назад
That's some good info for those without access to a welder.
