How to change oil and filter on Toyota Rav4 2013 to 2017

Thanks for sharing! Torque specs for those that like to be a little more professional. Oil pan drain plug 30ft.lbs, Canister drain plug 9ft.lbs, Canister housing 18ft.lbs.

It's sad that They're making changing the filter more complicated than what it used to be.

ℹ️ To to this work easier, ( DIY) : #1 Open oil cap on top of the engine. #2 Put large garbage bag under the engine area to prevent oil dripping on the ground. #3 Loose filter housing using filter housing wrench 🔧 ( don’t even try to remove small oil housing cap to drain oil residue, it’s absolutely not necessary, do this only if it leaks). #4 Put oil drain pan under the filter housing and manually slow remove filter housing. You will not get mess because oil drain pan is empty. Install new oil filter and new large gasket. Install filter housing on engine manually with your hand only, when it will stop spinning just use housing wrench to tighten completely but very gently.Do not over tighten or you will break housing. #5 Loose oil drain plug ( 14 mm), put oil drain pan under the engine and manually, slow remove oil drain plug. Allowed oil to drain completely. Change oil drain plug gasket ( aluminum one) if necessary . Install oil drain plug, gently. #6 Check owner manual for oil capacity and put exact amount of oil in the engine. Close engine fill cap. Start engine for 3-5 minutes, check for leaks. Stop engine. Check oil dipstick for correct oil level ( 5 minutes after engine stop). DONE ✅

I remember when Toyota had some “oil sludge” issues. I bet it was because people didn’t want to bother to change the filter. Unscrupulous shops also.

Can I change the filter with a strap wrench or will I need the specific oil filter wrench?

Question. Can I skid the second step and just take out the filter cap? Then loose the bottom and replace the o-ring?

How do you get rid of the maintenance code?

I thought I did something wrong. The filter housing on My rav4 broke. I was using the appropriate tool designed for the housing, but one of those 6 "teeth" on the housing snapped off.

Do you think I could do this without a jack or lift ?
