So you only removed one of the magnetic catch plugs therefore did not remove all of the fluid that was in there. The oil drain plug is actually on the back side of the vdrive. Once you drain all the oil, then you are to remove the strainer, clean it, then BOTH magnetic drain plugs to remove metal bits. I would suggest doing your drain and refill again being sure to drain from the proper oil drain plug.
It is recommended by the manufacturer that the v-drive be warmed up before changing fluid. The oil runs out easier. Also, I'd recommend getting an oil analysis done if you've never had one. Especially if there are metal filings on the magnetic drain plug. Costs $20 for the mail-in container.
Did you happen to measure the fluid that drained out? Or did you track how much you added total? The reason I ask is, my v-drive oil got contaminated. I've drained and flushed it multiple times, but after draining it only takes a bit less than 8 ounces to show full on the dip stick.. The book says it takes twice that. It looks like only half of the oil drains out; I can't get rid of the contamination. Any thoughts?
@@GearsAndTech it's a 44' sailboat, so no trailer, but the angle did occur to me, I was thinking about backing into my slip, tying the davit lines to dock cleats and trying to pull the stern down. That would add ~300 lbs of force with 4 or 5' of leverage. Not sure how many degrees that would change it, fore to aft. But first I'm going to try to disconnect the oil pump pickup line, it attaches at a fairly low point. Thanks for your input.
@@GearsAndTech It turned out that the magnetic plug is not at the bottom of the reservoir, only about half way down. It looks like the circulation line at the bottom could be removed to fully drain it, but on my boat a major PITA. Pumping it out seems to be the only practical way. After about 10 flushes, it looks like I got all the water out.
Thats not the drain bung , that nut and the one the same on the left are not the lowest drain bungs , the very bottom nut is a small headed bolt on the gesrbox side ,right at the bottom , every one thinks these 2 nuts faceing you are the bungs but look really low towsrds the gearbox to find thee drain bung .
