Dear Mr Tony. I just want to say I appreciate all your tutorials. Its not easy sharing your mechanic knowledge for free. Recently, I learned how to change my first oil change on my Optima 2012. Saving some money by diy instead of visiting shops. Keep up the good work and keep your enthusiastic energy.

When removing the filter on an Optima, it's easy for the old oil to seep around the sides and collect on the plastic housing that runs across the bottom of the front end. This allows even a small amount of oil to eventually collect somewhere and drip - sometimes not even near the filter. Happened to me. I would suggest placing a large rag between the plastic housing and the motor to act as a dam to catch excess oil.

Thanks so much! This was the first oil change in our Optima since we bought it, and hubby needed to know how to locate the oil filter. He watched the video, went out and changed the oil and filter without a glitch! He even appreciated the instructions on where to place the jack and jack stand!

Hey, this was a brilliant video! I did want to tell you, the Xtended Guard Oil filters you used are some of the best oil filters in the business. Sadly, the Xtended guard (now to be called Ultra) are not too commonly found. You normally find the Tough Guard and Extra Guard which have cardboard end caps inside. So while most Frams don't look too good inside, the ones you used are the exception! However, if there is a bulletin out and everything, better to use OEM, but no harm done!

You should have left the plug out untill after you pulled the filter more oil will leak out when the filter is removed also your suppost to clean the base where the filter goes so no dirt or junk screws up the filter seal and causes a leak

Thanks for the video. I just changed the oil on my wife's 2015 Kia Sorento. It's the same as the optima, with the grey gaurd underneath the vehicle.

You can get them at the Kia dealer when you buy the filter. They are under a buck. They also have them at places like O'Reilly's, but the ones from Kia are thicker and see to seal better. Thanks for asking.

Great video !!!!!! You should make a video of you showing how to change your brake pads and rotors on your Optima or either Sorento

Yes, this will work on a KIA Rio. The location of the drain plug and filter may be a little different, but they will be easy to find.

I have a 2012 SX Turbo. I can't figure out where I can jack this thing up from. If I jack from the jack points stated in the manual then I have no where to put the jack stands. If I jack from where you jacked in this video I'm pretty sure I will crack the plastic. The first time I changed the oil on this car I put the jack stands on the control arm...which I later found out is a bad idea. Is the undercarriage the same on the 2012 as the 2011 Optima? Any advice?

Recommend using disposable latex or nitrile gloves when changing oil to protect your skin.

Great vid & info. Doing the first oil change on our 2013 Sorento & didn't want to crawl under it before knowing what to look for & F.Y.I. Kia Sorentos are built in the USA! not Korea

You can save a lot and make sure it is done correctly. Dealerships some times don't even change your oil since they know no one is gonna check afterwards. Especially older people and woman. Don't bother going to stiffy lube as they would rob you blind. Do it yourself. Good luck and take care.

@wantonfly10 --- It's hard to see stuff looking through a camera some time. I've changed that oil before. I really should rehearse some of this stuff I do. But then, it wouldn't be tool dude style. Thanks for watching.

It's the same process on a 2010, but the filter and drain plugs may be in different places.

I have a 2013 Optima EX. Do you do your own radiator flushes? Owners manual says to bring it to the dealership, but I'd rather do it myself. Is there a drain plug or do you have to remove a hose?
@tooldudetony
@tooldudetony 11 лет назад
Ashley, I'm not as concerned with savings as I am with using quality oil. I'm concerned about the quality of oil they use at the dealers. These cars can go 7000 miles between oil changes -- but only when you use good oil. I alway use full synthetic Mobile One and you can't get that at the dealer. I hope that helps. Thanks

I'm not familiar with the engine in the hybrid. I'm sure it's not the same. The process would be the same, but the location of the filter and drain plug will be different. Thanks

@iateyourd0gg - I wish this had the turbo option, but I couldn't wait to get it. The turbo would probably get me in trouble anyway. Without the turbo, it definitely wants 5w-20. Thanks

Just saw the note about the Fram Oil Filters. Do you have another brand you recommend? Where can I get technical service bulletins? I've never done any maintenance myself. I just did the air filter myself - yehaw! And I was about to do the oil.

Would it be the same steps for the 2012 KIA Sorento
@kia1702
@kia1702 10 лет назад
12 yr kia master technition ,just a fyi for ya fram oil filters worst for kia ,not using a kia factory oil filter will set a check engine light and can cause engine damadge due to improper oil flow rate into cvvt assy ,also full synthetic oil defenetly not recommended for kia ,
@kia1702
@kia1702 10 лет назад
also you can use a semi synthetic ,but I wouldn't recommend full synthetic for a kia ,and waiting 7k to change your oil is crasy that factory recommendation for light duty use its recommended that oil in ohio climate be changed every 5k in a kia ,our dealership uses semi synthetic good oil not all dealerships are bad just some
@tooldudetony
@tooldudetony 10 лет назад
I switched to KIA filters with the next oil change. Only did this one with Fram. The KIA filters cost less than the FRAM do too. I just paid $6.60 each for 6 of them. Don't forget to install a new drain plug gasket.
@cq90stang
@cq90stang 9 лет назад
Tool Dude Tony I get so tired of hearing fram filters are junk. I had a 90 Noam trick that I sold with over 350000 miles on it. Only time motor was open was when I put timing chain guides in. I've used fram on everything I've owned including motorcycles and custom motors. Kia doesn't make oil filters. ..they sell a filter that is rebadged as their own filter. Only suggestion I would make is buy the fram ultra oil filter is good for 15000 miles and Mobil 1 synthetic extended drain oil which is also good for 15000 miles. I change my oil every 10000 miles normally about once a year and no issues. Regular oil and filters are recommended to be changed over in Europe every 7500 miles and that isn't on synthetic. Just my 2 cents.

@john1240able --- I did a year ago. Got some great deals. This Optima is loaded and lots of fun. The Sorento has a 4 cylinder engine and gets 25 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway -- For real! Plenty of power too. They are nice cars.
@tooldudetony

I just bought some Kia oil filters from Kia. They were only $6. That's cheaper than those crappy Fram filters from Wally World.... :)

You know there's a TSB put out by Kia/Hyundai about FRAM filters, right? I wouldn't use FRAM even if it was given to me. Kia/Hyundai oem filters are about $6 and light years better than FRAM.

Hey, a 2013 Sorento shouldn't need it's brakes flushed. If it does, take it in because it is still under warranty. Sorry, I don't have a video on that.
