How to change rear brake pads with electric park brake using no scanner tools

To replace rear brake pads on a car with EPB you need to electrically wind back the calipers with a scan tool. Here I will show you how to do this yourself without using expensive scanners. This only applies to cars with the motors on the calipers.

Just to clear up some confusion. I have had a lot of questions regarding putting the epb into service mode. Basically, all you need to do is make sure the brake will not come on half way through the job. It is unlikely but you never know. Best way is to disconnect the epb motors on the calipers. Make sure they are plugged back in before turning the ignition on or pulling the switch to avoid any fault codes.

Would it be wise to disconnect the negative on the battery to make sure the EPB stays in “service mode”?

hi mate i have a skoda superb and need to change the rear pads. do i HAVE to put it into service mode, or can i just leave the car running, turn the park brake off, then take off the motor and then disconnect the wires then do the work, then do the reverse of it all to put it back on?

Saving this tutorial brother... My wife took her 2020 Mini Cooper to a shop and they wanted to charge us $1000 for brake pads and rotors I brought it home and checked the rotors nothing wrong with them and pulled the caliper off the back and the damn rear pads are still good I replaced the front pads for $65 and I just wanted to know what I was getting into to get that caliper on the rear done whenever the rear ones do go out I really appreciate it brother...this video is a $$$$$ saver!!!!

@@pistonbroke And it'll be much tastier unless Nissan Rogue sources his pints from a micro-brewery. English ale totally pales ours in comparison (accidental pun there). But we do have some spectacular microbrews. Thanks for the video. I can really only say one good thing about electric parking brakes.. there's many parking pawls finally leading a long stressless relaxed long life, with associated auto tranny bits all lasting longer cuz it ceased to mix broken off chunks from time to time from Walmart parking lot bumps. Do you guys have Wal-Mart's? I guess not..but you'll have similar probably. Although you probably have far few bump stops than we do cuz you guys are generally more disciplined and skilled than here. I've given up trying to get friends and family to use the dang parking brake on hills and everywhere to save the tranny. Only 1 ex-girlfriend actually adopted the habit and still does it to this day..bless her soul.. Come to think of it, she still blows the cold off her evaporator 1 minute out before parking too..a fine fine woman. 👍🙏

Did a very similar job on Peugeot 3008 SUV. I put the ignition on, took of the electronic park brake but left the gearbox in P. Undone the caliper and took off the motor same as you, but I also disconnected the cable to the motor to stop it coming on half way through the job. Once done put it all back together, no faults on the dash and all worked well.

@Idontwantausernamist 2 года назад
Hey Kurt! I'm about to do the same on my 2019 3008 SUV, most videos are for the older MPV style 3008 and it seems the EPB is different and you shouldn't use a piston kit alone to push back the piston (as seen on the older car) but you should have it un-done either via the motor's socket or via the method you describe. So essentially, on the newer car, there is no need to really use a piston kit? you can simply push the piston back after it's wound-back with a screwdriver pushing the pad against it?
@The_K_Man
@The_K_Man 2 года назад
@@Idontwantausernamist I think you can wind out the back of caliper and then use a caliper tool to push the piston, or do them both at the same time so the piston goes down as you're winding it out on the back? It's been a few months since I did it but what you're suggesting should most likely work. Good luck.

Informative but only half a video with bits missed. Some help but more detail would be nice. Thanks though 👍

What's missing? If you still can't do it from this vid then better off getting a pro to do it.

You don’t need to do all that extra work. Just unplug the connector add 12v on pins and retract the calliper simple

Quicker to do it this way than piss about with wires and a battery. Less than a minute to whip the motor off and wind it back with a milwaukee ratchet.

You didn't show how you did it how you glad the brakes or got the Piston to push out to the brake pad thanks for nothing

What? If you don't know how to pump the pistons back out then you shouldn't be working on the car. I did say what to do at the end of the video if you care to watch it all.
