In this video i am showing you how to change the rear differential and transfercase/front diff fluid on a Toyota Rav4. This task has been performed on a 2014 Rav4 LE, but the process will be the same on any Rav4 from 2012-2018.
Crush washers : 12157-10010
Drain plugs : 90341-18051
Transfercase fill plug : 90341-18023
Rear diff fill plug : 90341-A0002 (revised part)
Red line GL-5 75W-85 full synthetic gear oil. ( any full synthetic 75w-85 gear oil will do )
Fluid pump : Performance Tool W1139 Quart/Gallon Fluid Pump and Hose
In the video i am changing the drain and fill plugs due to it being rusted and damaged hex head. For regular fluid changes you do not need to change the plugs.

GL 4 oils are typically recommended when there are yellow metal components in the transmission or differential. GL5 oils can attack certain yellow metals. In the description it says "any gear oil," just wanted to make sure people know there is a difference. Otherwise good video.

A little tip, gently hit the drain plugs with hammer. It helps with loosening up of the older plugs.

For the rear differential plug, any reason you used the revised part that changes it from the 10mm hex to a bolt plug? Do you recall what mm size was it? And lastly, if given both part options (hex or bolt) which would you recommend as I’m looking online to buy and see both available.

Just to add more information about which recommended oil to use. 75W-90 gear oil is recommended for the rear differential and for the transfer case for this rav4 generation. You can still use the 75W-85, but the recommended is 75W-90.

@WrenchTogether

That would be the 8 nuts for the rear drive shaft. 4 nuts in the front of the driveshaft where it mounts to the transfercase and 4 at the rear of the driveshaft where it mounts to the rear diff. Manual calls to check if they are right.

Nilo, I will double check the exact number and get back you later. Somewhere closer to 800 as i recall. How many miles do you have ? Have you done a tuneup on the car? I didn't make a video of one for the Rav4 though. Here are the steps -New spark plugs -Remove and clean the throttle body -New air filter -Run a basic injector cleaner though the fuel tank. In the manual transmission cars, the manual transmission and transfer-case is one unit. There is a drain plug the same kind of area and the fill plug is on the right side looking down the engine bay. I will try to reference a video of showing that.

Hello WT, I have a 2017 Toyota RAv4 with 40k miles on it, was I supposed to change the transfer case oil at 30k miles? Thank you so much for the great video!
@WrenchTogether

Honestly i don't think Toyota even tells you to change the fluids anymore if you are not using it for towing. Most manufacturers mention so called "Lifetime" fluids. not sure how they determine the lifetime. They have synthetic fluids in them so the changing intervals are much longer. My personal preference is about 60k as a cheap insurance. I know people who are running the original fluids and their rav4s are in the 200k. Our cars are built to last.
@miked5106

@WrenchTogether a comment abt 'Toyota' lifetime fluids. I have a 2004 Sienna mini-van with 360k miles. Original transmission and differential fluids. I chg oil (don't use full synthetic in this generation) religiously at 10k miles. Car runs great!
