How to change the rear differential fluid on a 2006-2012 Toyota Rav4 AWD. Drain and fill. High temperatures and heavy loads break down the protective properties of gear oil over time. Gear wear and moisture from venting to atmosphere further contaminate the fluid which can lead to leaks and premature part failure. Replacing the rear differential fluid every 30-60,000 miles is good maintenance. Frequent start/stop driving, towing, high temperatures, or exposure to heavy dust or water might merit the earlier end of the range, while straight-and-level commuting would allow for a stretched-out interval.

Nice video presentation thank you. I did my wife's 08 Rav4 years ago. I tried last year to drain & fill both diffs but couldn't remove front diff fill plug this time. I had my mechanic do the front.

A simple tip that I found to be easier is when pumping the fluid in simply put the pump handle on a flat surface under the RAV and press the bottle up to pump. Easier to leverage power than pumping downward.

Another choice i used was a $ 7.00 Harbor Freight hand pump with hoses.

Nice work. I also remove the fill plug first just so I know it comes off. If you remove the drain plug first (dumping the oil) and cant"t get the fill plug out, then you are stranded. I drive a 2006 AWD Rav. Thanks for sharing.

Did this help with the grinding noise ie did it lubricate the bearing enough to smooth out the noise? I was thinking of putting an additive in with the oil to help lubricate the bearing ie marvel mystery oil just a dash to see if it helps... Otherwise it's a full bearing removal which is a bitch of a job....

Use penetrating oil like WD-40 or PB Blaster on the two bolts and leave them for a few minutes before opening.

This box is leaking oil. It has like very thin red color gasket or seal between within the box itself. Like the box is made of multiple parts. Any advice or idea how to fix ? Do I have to remove the differential box and dissemble it?

I have a 2015 RAV4 AWD- I noticed a slow leak coming from undercarriage middle back end. The leak is a couple of drops only that happens every three days or so. It is definitely not water or antifreeze. Trying to find out what are the probable causes. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks.

My 2011 RAV4 V6 (USA) Limited doesn't look like that, exactly. The space in front of the transfer case fill hole is so narrow I couldn't use the same 10mm hex socket (same as yours) I used for the rear And front diff/trnsfr case on my 08 RAV4 4cyl and the rear diff of this car. Seems the trans unit is actually situated closer. The space is only wide enough for an 10mm allen wrench and not the socket itself. At most there's 1/4 inch on either side of the key. Seems I'll need to use a 2in+ longer 10mm allen wrench that isn't in a socket. Any idea why it's different and suggestions for a proper tool?

i have a 1999 Rav 4 , Engine 3S. .Replaced the rear diff three times now in less than 4 years. Every time, after driving for a long distance the diff starts producing a whistling sound, burns off the seals and destroys the bearings inside...and the entire diff cracks.. what might be the problem? might there be a problem with the car itself? or something?

I have a 2008 rav4 base model. Its makes kind of like a grinding noise when I make close left and right hand turns. The noise mainly comes from the rear of the car, I know it's not suspension related because it doesn't make clunky noises instead it makes like a bad bearing gear grinding noise as if the gear oil is dried up.

Could be a bad wheel bearing that makes noise with the turning load. Try to determine if it's coming from one side or the other. If it's both sides, could be a differential issue. Probably would need checked out.

Every 30-60,000 miles is typical for most differentials. On a light car like this, if you're not doing a lot of pulling, 60,000 miles is plenty early. Thanks for watching!

I have a 2008 Toyota Rav4 FWD Sport model with a 2.4l engine. How often would you suggest I change the rear differential gear oil? I leave in North Jersey, would like to know the type of gear oil I need to use. Thank you...BTW your videos are very helpful...

The range on rear diffs is typically every 30-60k. In a car this light, I'd say your safe to push the higher end. A good SAE 80W-90 fluid is what Toyota calls for. You could go with a synthetic in that weight, but it isn't necessary. Great video! My 2011 rav4 just started clunking occasionally while the wheels are turning so I looked under the rear end and it is leaking from where the cv axles meet the rear different. My question: are there independent axle seals that I can replace or do I have to buy the entire axle? Thanks!

@@haleemsamady576 in my particular case, I determined that the blowoff valve on top of the differential was clogged. This lead to excess heat building up and finding it's way out through the path of least resistance which was the axle seals. The noise was due to a rock stuck between my rotor and backing plate.

Does a 2011 toyota rav4 have a breather vent? I have a rear seal that is leaking, and I wondering if it was caused by a clogged breather vent?

Yes it does have one. It is at the top of the differential case. You need to try to see if it moves. If it does not move up or down then there is road crap clogging it up. Best to clean it up with something like penetrating oil and work it free. And no you can't remove it without dropping the rear diff. A clogged breather cap is the most common caused of the rear diff sealing leaking.

A mechanic told me I need a new axle seal at the differential because it is 'dripping.' He said it would be close to $600. That seemed really high. So I took it elsewhere and they said it isn't "dripping," it is seeping. But should be replaced at some point. I have been watching for any signs of dripped oil under my car in that spot and do not see anything. Do I really need to have the seal replaced? And, if so, how much should that cost? I have a 2007 RAV4, V6, AWD. If not, can I just have gear oil added periodically? (like at every oil change). Thank you!

if it's the rear differential it should be a fraction of that. I've had to have them done twice. Which is BS. You could try adding periodically, but it isn't really super simple to tell if the level is low, and you don't want to run low.

Every 30,000 miles is pretty standard. For a light car like this, if you're not pulling a trailer often, 60k would probably be fine. The setup is probably the same if not identical on your model year. Fill it until it's about a half-inch below the fill plug. You can stick your pinky inside the hole to get an approximate depth.

Do you know much about the diff noise on these? I just bought a 2002 rav4 yesterday. Test driving it at 60 to 80klm it wasn't too noisy, but getting it out on the highway on our way home and doing 100k, that noise is really hard to ignore. It also shudders a little bit when in idle in gear ( auto). I've been reading up on it today and have found that there was an extended warranty to fix diff noise issues that obviously the previous owners didn't get sorted. All I've been told today in a forum is that it's an expensive fix, but no other info. I'm in Australia, skill level...Garfield😁😉

Could be a variety of things. Cupped tire, a pinion or side gear bearing, CV axle, wheel bearing. Rotate the tires to see if the sound moves. Vibration in gear at a stop could be a motor mount. You might have to take it to a shop.

I have that noise come on at 60km/h it's really annoying grinding noise. Rav4 2006 model. From what I have seen online it's the diff bearing that needs replacing. Toyota will replace the diff coupling for well over $1000 or you can buy the bearing for around $100 and have a mechanic replace the bearing for much less..or do it yourself if you are handy. There are plenty of good videos here on how to remove the diff and replace the bearing. The problem is that Toyota won't sell you the bearing. You have to buy it after market and make sure you get the correct one for your model! If the grinding noise changes when you corner then it's probably not the diff probably more likely a cv joint...

If it's front wheel drive, it won't have the rear differential shown in this video nor a transfer case. It will only have the front differential built into the transaxle (transmission). If you are getting a clunking from the rear, it's more likely to be suspension related. When does it happen? Over bumps? Speed or gear changes? Braking? Just a few things to think about as you troubleshoot. Thanks for watching!

@@MasterJacks mine makes the same noise I have the 4x4 and it tugs and clunks when I barley tap the gas after braking, it tugs when it changes gears, makes clunking noises, also snapping in the front.

You can verify with a dealer and your VIN, but this one doesn't, nor does any RAV4 that I know of.

What's the difference between differential and transmission fluid?

The differential is a just a couple of very large gears changing the final ratio and direction of rotation from the transmission to the wheels. It uses a simple heavy fluid. Transmission fluid is much thinner with a lot more additives. It travels through small passages, acts as a fluid coupler, and withstands high heat loads from the friction of the wet clutches in the tansmission. In an AWD RAV4, you will have a rear differential, a transfer case (4x4), and a front differential which is integrated into the transmission. Because the front differential is integrated, it shares the same fluid as the automatic transmission. I probably over explained that, hopefully it answers your question.

My fill plug is super tight and I can't seem to get it off so I called the Toyota dealership and they want to charge me $369 to change the 2016 RAV4 rear differential oil :(... wow!
