2006-2012 Rav4: Transfer Case Fluid Change

How to perform the transfer case service on a 2006-2012 Toyota Rav4 with AWD. Ideal fluid level is slightly below the fill hole. The transfer case is relatively maintenance free, however it's a good idea to change the fluid from time to time. In addition to normal wear, venting to atmosphere can bring in moisture and contaminates leading to gasket failure and corrosion. Fresh fluid keeps seals and metal parts happy. Replace your transfer case fluid every 30-60,000 miles. The range depends on factors such as off-roading, snow, temperature extremes, etc.

Hi, thanks for your video. I just changed my 2009 Rav4 (V6 version). That fill plug is a bugger to get out. I ended up using a 10mm hex key which worked better than the socket technique. Better fit into plug. Really good job putting this video online.

Just wanted to express my thanks. I had the transfer case oil changed a month earlier, noticed the crush washer was reused so i decided to change it again myself with new fluid and new crush washers. Both times the fluid came flodding out from the fill bolt. dunno if its normal but my mechanic filled it to the correct level just a month ago. guess this might be normal. Anyways , thanks for the video.

Here’s a helpful tip remove the 14 mm transmission bolt before you take the 10 mm hex fill plug out of the transfer case. that will give you more room.

I need to do this again. I did the transfer case on my Rav4 a few years ago, so it's more than time. The diff I couldn't get to since I have no lift and I'm not comfortable backing up on my wheel ramps. I took it to Valvoline for that. I tried crawling under it but there wasn't enough room for leverage. I might try again and put it on jack stands on one side and try that way.

@@blass5506 Half way up the middle of the drive shaft I think like in the video. Honestly I get the differential fluid case and the transfer case confused. They're both in the same kind of area at different end of the car. Use a really bright light like one of the bright little shop lights aimed up. I will have to do this again when it warms up.

My 2011 RAV4 V6 (USA) Limited doesn't look like that, exactly. The space in front of the transfer case fill hole is so narrow I couldn't use the same 10mm hex socket (same as yours) I used for the rear And front diff/trnsfr case on my 08 RAV4 4cyl and the rear diff of this car. Seems the trans unit is actually situated closer. The space is only wide enough for the 10mm key and not the socket itself. At most there's 1/4 inch on either side of the key. Seems I'll need to use a 2in+ longer 10mm hex key that isn't in a socket. Any idea why it's different and suggestions for a proper tool?

The service manual recommends that the Transfercase and the Rear Differential should have 85W/80W-90 and 80W-90 respectively. I am planning on just doing 75W-90 fully synthetic Amsoil for both. That shouldn't be an issue correct? It is just going to flow better during freezing temperatures?
@MasterJacks
@MasterJacks 2 года назад
That'll be fine. They'll flow the same when cold but the 75W will be barely thinner when hot, no big deal. A 75w90 oil means it won't be thicker than a 90 weight when cold and won't be thinner than a 75 weight when hot.

@MasterJacks
@MasterJacks 6 лет назад
Redbull661 The transfer case consists of a couple of big gears that are splash lubricated. The fluid doesn't go through any pumps or clutches. Because of this, just about any gear lube will do. I would go with whatever your local parts house recommends regardless of brand. They will all serve well.

It will only have a rear differential if it has AWD. If it is FWD, the front differential (final drive) is integrated into the transxle and doesn't have separate fluid. If it is AWD, then your fill plug can be seen in my other video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P8oIpURpQ_A.html

That's a great question because the Scheduled Maintenance booklet that came with our 2009 RAV4 says to inspect the automatic transmission fluid and also says to inspect the front differential oil?? If there are not two separate units, they are creating confusion. I guess they simply forgot to stipulate that the front differential oil only applies to a 4WD vehicle. They also listed "inspect rear differential oil" but they stipulated in 4WD vehicles only.

Mohamed Ismail I am not certain of the exact changes to the vehicle over the four year period, but the service methods shown in these videos are fairly universal to any vehcile. What about a FWD model (2009 RAV4). Owner's manual mentions draining the front differential but sources say it shares ATF fluid with the transaxel. This is confusing because they don't recommend changing the ATF? How do I make sense of this?
@MasterJacks
@MasterJacks 4 года назад
@@stevensevek6151 sorry for the late response, just saw this. The FWD model doesn't have a transfer case. It does however have a front differential which is integrated into the transmission/transaxle. It shares ATF with the transmission and does NOT require a service independent of the transmission. If you change your trans fluid, you'll also be changing the front diff fluid. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching.

@@tothepointvids5192 I think both brands make a good synthetic. 75w90 will be fine. It will never be thicker than a 90 weight when cold, and never thinner than a 75 weight when hot. It will provide the same protection as 80w90 when cold, and will be slightly thinner when hot. It's so close I wouldn't be concerned at all. Rear differentials are big gears and very forgiving.
