HOW TO: Change / Replace 2016-2022 Chevy Malibu Tail Light DIY STEP BY STEP

I created this video as a REAL step-by-step tutorial for changing the tail lights on a 2016-2022 Chevy Malibu LT1, LT2, and Premiere. There are shorter videos on youtube showing the same thing, but this is the only one that shows you every single step from start to finish without cutting out any important bits for beginners and those with little experience like myself.
In this video I focus on the passenger side tail lamp as this light was damaged on this vehicle. However, the process is completely identical for the driver's side! No matter which side tail light you are replacing, this video will work! Disclaimer: Some amazon links on videos are used to support this channel.

why replace the whole casing and not just the bulb?

His lens was cracked because a lawncare company hit his light while driving down the street (the car was parked on the street). Also, if I remember correct, you can’t change individual bulbs on these things anyways. If a light goes out, you must replace the entire housing.

Yep! Just pop the two carpet tabs and twist the back of the bulb holder where the wires go in to the left. The bulb socket will come out and you can switch the bulb. The LT model I'm with takes a 7440 Longlife. A pkg of 2 for $10 at the auto supply.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of how to get the wiring harness connectors to separate. You may be the only person on the entire internet who has bothered to show how to do this. Kudos to you fine sir... from a fellow (NE?) Ohio resident.

Thank you!! 🙏🏾 And yeah! That connector is probably the trickiest part of doing this simple job and I never saw anyone else mention how it works either! It took me a good 5 minutes to figure it out myself! And yes! NE Ohio! 🙌🏾 Wish you and your Malibu the best!!

@@SaraiGarage Next, you need to solve the mystery of how to get that upper, outside bulb (socket) out of the tail light housing. The larger one is typical 1/4 turn and pull... but the smaller one has an arrow on the housing, but will spin round and round, with no apparent spot to align and pull.

@@SaraiGarage I had backed into somebody. I guess the housing got bent. Hammer set it free. The trick was getting the new light back in : )

Watched your videos for light replacements a couple times now. Switching my 2021 RS bulbs to LED. Driver's headlight was a pain! Just noticed you're in Ohio, and doesn't seem like you're far from me. I'm in Northwest Akron.

Fuses are really easy. All cars have a fuse panel. It’s kind of like a breaker box for the electric of a house. It is usually located in the trunk or in the engine compartment. Google where the fuse panel is for your car, then Google fuse panel maps. It should show you/ label what each fuse is for. Find the ones for whatever lights are not working. Pull it out and slide in a new fuse. It should all work again. Fuses are very cheap. Like $1-$5. The hard part is just locating the panel and figuring out which fuse is causing you trouble. The actual process of taking out the fuse and putting in a new one is like taking out a thumb drive from a computer and sliding in a new one. Very easy. No tools. Just pull out with fingers. I don’t personally have videos on this topic, but just watch one or two on RU-vid. Doesn’t matter what car, just so you get an idea of what the repair is like. You got this, don’t worry!
